Title: WW1 aircraft pics == courtesy of Angus
Post by: Simaril on April 16, 2008, 07:04:56 PM
Not long ago Angus mentioned that he had some photo's of WW1 aircraft, but needed a host. Well, here are a few of them. Turns out someone had a trip to Duxford airshow with a press pass in hand...and he took good advantage of it, apparently!

So without further ado, here're a few that he's sent for our enjoyment.

They'd be better without the modern planes in the background, but I guess you can only do so much with an open airfield.

Rino they look pretty close.  They're no smaller than 3/4 scale (where my money is)

Checking around -- references say the S.E. 5a was 20ft 11 inches long. Assuming that the older gentleman by the planes is under 6 feet tall, it would seem that those planes are full size.

Amazing to realize just how small those things were. Even more impressive -- some WW1 biplanes had 60% of their total weight accounted for by the engine alone...and that engine was ROTARY, not fixed, so the engine mass itself was spinning along with the propeller. Talk about torque!
