Title: Now which cpu
Post by: SIK1 on April 17, 2008, 10:05:07 PM
I had pretty much made up my mind I was going to get an E6600, then I started looking at the E6850, only a few dollars more than the 6600. Then I started reading about the E8400, and it is cheaper than either one of the other processors. So which one would you buy?

This is what I just got and it smokes. At least figuratively. NEWEGG has it now for $209 with free shipping I think.

Actualy Newegg says they are sold out as of about an hour ago. mwave has it for $205, if it's not soldout already, these processors seem to sellout quick.

Best bang for your dollar...the E8400 hands down.

I just upgraded both my CPU and video card within a week of each other. The upgrade to the E8400 was first and I saw a good speed increase in my system. The video card was 2 days ago and was a last minute change of mind from an ATI card or the 512mb version of the 8800.

Current system..

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R Motherboard
Intel E8400 3Ghz Wolfdale
4Gb G-Skill DDR2 800 Ram (weakest point in system right now)
EVGA GeForce 640mb 320bit GDDR3 8800GTS
PP&C 610w EPS Power supply

In this configuration, at STOCK speeds (I don't overclock) I can't slow the game down. I've tried. Detail sliders in game are full left and I get the same FPS on the ground as I do in the air. The system keeps plugging along like it's not even straining.

When I get some time, I'll start playing with the control panel for the card to see if I can make it slow down in the game.

I have an e8400, 4GB RAM, and 512MB 8800GTS card.  I have all of the settings maxed out in both the game and the card control panel.  I have my frame rate limit set at 60 in the game and have not seen any circumstance in which it drops below 60.

I doubt you'll be able to slow it down.  I can't and I'm running an E-6750 (2.66 Gig) with a 512 mb 8800 GTS although, with anti-aliasing maxed, it will occasionally screen-lock (grey screen) and the only way to exit is with the power button.  Up until it locks, there are no visible issues or slow-downs.  I had AA maxed but turned it down a little and this has cleared up.

LOL, Just must luck, I also noticed that the PS I got is now ten dollars cheaper. :cry

I received all the parts today except for the PS so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to start the build.  :cry
