Title: Noob Gunnery Practice Club
Post by: PFactorDave on April 21, 2008, 11:17:50 PM
I've been playing AH for a couple of months now.  My ACM skills are improving.  I've been spending time offline against the AI, as well as time in the Late War Arenas and some time in the TA.

Recently, I discovered that in the TA I can turn on the Lead Computing Gunsight.  So, I have been spending some time each day in the TA with the Lead Computing site turned on, simply following whoever I can find around, paying attention to the Lead needed to hit at different angles.

Since I started doing this I have noticed that I seem to be hitting more effectiviely and getting more kills.

It occurred to me that pursuing this line of training might be worthwhile.  So, I'm seeking others with the same desire.

I'm inviting anyone who would like to improve his/her gunnery skills to join me in the TA at Bishop Base 100 from about 3:30pm CST until about 4:00pm CST on a daily basis.  If there is enough interest we can make it a regularly scheduled Gunnery Practice Session.  Perhaps a warm-up before going to the Arenas or something.

The idea being that we will pair up, one person takes a position on the 6 o'clock of the other and hits the Check 6 call to start.  Then the "target" plane jinks and dodges while the trail plane practices gunnery.  Once ammo is depleted, roles are reversed and the other pilot gets some practice shooting at a moving target.

This wouldn't be any fancy Air Combat Manuevering Training, anyone looking for that should be contacting a Trainer or attending a Clinic.  This would be noob pilots helping other noob pilots by allowing their tails to get waxed for a few minutes.

Thoughts?  Questions?  Any Interest?

If I can find the time I'd be interested.  I can play good bait, and everyone knows my gunnery could use some help. :aok

There's a lead-computing gun sight??  :huh I never knew that  :noid

Leading comes naturally to me, but sometimes I'm not sure. I'd like to become sure  :)

Yup, Ctrl-Tab in the TA and you are able to Tab select targets, red or green, and the system will put a green + (or pair of green +'s) where the bullets will land.

I just learned of it a few days ago and simply following another plane around with it active is pretty instructive in my opinion.

Hope you can join us!  In fact, I hope somebody joins in!  LOL  This is really just an attempt of mine to find a few willing training partners.

I've come to the conclusion that the whole Training Corps thing, while a really cool thing, is a bit intimidating to a new player.  Especially when you pair it up with all the e-peen ego crap that gets tossed around here in the Community Forums and the pretty steep aerodynamics learning curve.

I'm hoping that other relatively new players will join me in the TA for a few minutes each day so that we can practice on each other and perhaps share our newly learned lessons.

Just for the record, I am not a Trainer or connected in anyway to HTC.  I'm not even very good at the game.  I'm just hoping to find other people who are interested enough to put some effort into improving.  Hopefully a few of them can join me at Bishop Base 100 from 3:30pm CST til 4:00pm CST each day as long as it is productive.

Cool, thank you! I look forward to meeting up with you in the TA. Welcome to Aces High  :)

PFactorDave I have never seen one of the trainers display any sort of ego in the TA. They have all been more than helpful from what I have seen and experianced. They will not put up with any BS however, and some less than others so make sure you know the rules of the TA and you will get lots of help.

So don't be intimidated to ask questions in the TA, even people that are not trainers are usually more than glad to lend a hand in the TA.

Oh no!  I didn't mean to suggest that the Trainers had an ego problem!  Maybe I phrased it poorly,  I just meant that folks who read the forums might get a misguided impression from the posts, there is (if you are intellectually honest), a huge amount of ego floating around in the forums...  My limited experience with AH Trainers is that they are extremely dedicated to the game, and deserve NOTHING but respect.  That said, a new player might be interested in a gunnery practice that doesn't carry the expectation of being held by somebody who is a "Good Stick".

Sometimes the simpler folk (like me) would like some opportunity to test our limits against similar simple folk.  No danger of being embarrased by some talented stick, because we are all noobs.

But, we realize that we can benefit from such a gunnery practice none the less.

I would be up for flying around with you guys, I'd also like to try getting some maneuvers down. I am PST... so correct me but that will be at 1330 until 1400 hours PST?
I'm also interested in what aircraft some of you guys will be using, as for me I will be flying either of the P-51s. Might also try out a BF-109 or an F4U.

When you don't have a group together the furball area in the DA is a good substitute. Theres almost always a quick fight to get in there, and the sheer number of pickers about motivate you to kill quickly!  :lol

I work primarily on my tater gunnery there, you get a lot more 'realistic' looks with several targets to choose from in a much shorter time period then you do in the MA.

just go to .>options> arena settings> flight model flags and it lets u turn on or off many options.

back when hth was still active everyone was using it on those maps that people let them

The one thing to remember when using the lead computing sight is to not use it to aim. Use it to judge your aim and the amount of lead you must take. If all you do is move your gunsight to the cross-hairs, you're not really going to figure out what you're doing. Instead, aim at the target like you normally would and then see how far off you are. Get used to the proper lead and remember it's affected by speed, relative angles, how hard the other plane is maneuvering, ballistic characteristics of your plane's guns, etc.

Regards,

Hammer

That was a good idea PFactorDave.  One of the best I've seen here for noobs helping noobs.  <S> for both the idea and for the initiative to improve.

Well, nobody showed up at Base 100 today.  A little disappointed, but there were a fair number of folks flying around A1, so I was able to get some practice in anyway.

Will try again tomorrow.

Hmm, I just got home from school. I live in Alaska, so my time is behind everyone else's. A1 would probably be a better base, since everyone flies there.

Offer is appreciated.  I didn't check 6 ya because you weren't at Base 100 like was originally intended and I wasn't wanting to interrupt whatever it was that you were trying to accomplish in the Training Arena.

I had hoped that the interested parties would meet in an area away from normal traffic patterns, so as to stay out of the way of everyone else.

Dave:
This is a great idea. This is a weak point of mine, and neither MA play nor duelling seem to be fixing it quickly.

You'll be seeing me. <S>

Dave, if you happen to see anyone in the TA with the squad tag 'PSAM' it stands for 'please shoot at me'. if you see any of us in there you may open fire without asking. the vox we usualy use is 171 and anyone is most welcome to say hello. If you would like to become a member of PSAM to further aid your practice sessions and help you hook up with like minded pilots then type your ingame ID here and i will wing you an invite.

S!
