Post by: Udie on August 24, 2000, 12:40:00 PM
This Sunday's Snapshot will run with a twist.  The CM (me  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) ) will ride in a B17 as a gunner, that B17 will be the Memphis Belle and MUST survive the mission.  The mission starts at 4:00pm est Sunday 8-7-00.

Come and join us it should be fun  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  Here's the write

I had a good time.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Here are some of the guys I was with, putting on a formation flying clinic.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

The bombers did a nice job staying together (even though we should have worked out command arrangements beforehand) and kept the Belle alive.  And the Luftwaffe flew great, despite being outnumbered and facing the turbolasers of doom.

I took some pings but was not damaged, made my drop on the target and landed.  My gunner AKFF1 knocked down 3 Jerries!  WTG AKFF1!!!

Thanks for letting me gun Funked

I got in late (family stuff) and your invite was very appreciated. I will have fond memories of the whole flight.

First the massive force of Forts, flying off to the target. Then the gut tightening sight of a sky full of Messerschimdts boring down on us. The ack pounding in all directions, and bogeys all over!

Right out of 12 O'clock high.

The reason we didn't get many hits wasn't my gunnery

Only one 109 attacked us (the first one) the other two I shot as they were attacking our wingies. I also got an assist, knocking a Jerry offa Dowling and a few hit sprites on a couple others. The shooting was easy, I was just "flock" shootin

Ya know how every now n then everything goes your way?

And the final, and a big highlight for me was that perfect soft as a feather landing you did. I watched it from the 1 key and the F3.

One word for that landing... Saaa Weet! I'm lucky if I can walk away from a b17 after I land it! LOL!

Do ya give flying lessons?

Sure any time.

I thought the victory roll was better than the landing though.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I had a very good time.  Thanks udie and anyone else who worked on it.

Here's a funny story.  It was "on your honor" friendly-only tags.  We're on our run, dots are closing from afar, at least the first, lower group of bombers got to drop before any engagement, suddenly from the tail gunner position I see B17s around me shooting into thin air and I'm thinking to myself "These guys are nuts, they should be saving ammo" and suddenly "ping ping ping" I'm getting hit and then I realize "Friendly-only tags".....these guys are not shooting into thin air, they are shooting at those two enemy bees buzzing through our formation!  That was really really neat, trying to track the little dots and judge distance...actually, just trying to acquire the dots before they got into shooting range was fun enough.

I have not seen Nath's film yet, if there is a B17 with the right engine dead and smoking black, and three fuel leaks, that would be me.

Lots of fun.

Yeah Fury ended up with a few holes in him.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I moved over near him to give him some cover with my AKFF1 Kill-bot.  Nath said on ch1 that it looked liked two B-17's were mating.

I just watched the film.  What an awesome job Nath, the waiting for the right time and the flying/gunning.  A great film to watch.

And thanks to Funked, for keeping tight.

Those guys in the picture above are pure gold-dust. Somehow I ended up in the lead of the forward, low group - everybody slid into formation like they were on rails. <S> to ya all. I`m only sorry that I got an assist on Dowding in the 2 position, seeing as he`s a squad mate of mine  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Also a huge WTG to Udie who got a little stressed at the start of the mission but sorted it all out for the rest of us. Thanks Udie! <S>

Thanks Udie!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

That one was alot of fun, first time the bombers had a chance with the numbers.

It was my first special event - and I enjoyed every second of it!!!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Thx to Udie for a great spectacle - can almost imagine what it was like in the war - pretty terrifying i'd think.

The b17 shot down by Nath was yours truly, and I'm shocked that you all find my demise so enjoyable!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

If i could only get the damn film viewer to work I'd be able to admire it myself (can anyone help there?).

Sorry Wilf, for taking your kill - great leadership of the flight!!!

Desperate now for another special event, MA doesn't seem the same.

I can't get the film to work either.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

I helped shoot one offa your six (I got the assist you got the kill   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

Sorry that Nath got you, it is really hard to stop a determined 109, 190 or Hog pilot. It often ends up a suicide for the fighter pilot, he gets you by hanging on your six while you shred him with your 50s, and you both go down. Even with a wing gone, the fighters still hang in there on my six and shred my bomber. I now don't shop shooting a fighter on my six until he explodes.

Nath was shot down later, if that is any comfort.

It was really good to be in a close formation so we could help each other, thx  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). I find i do shoot down quite a few fighters in the b17, i've had 4 kill runs in it before - i think luck has something to do with it...

I can't get any films to work on the film viewer, no matter how hard i try, which is very frustrating  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif).

I was not manning the guns when Nath started his run - I was trying to keep formation with the rest of the flight - should have payed more attention to the fighters around!

Getting shot down didn't spoil the fun - I'd bombed the target and got a kill, so getting killed rounded off the experience  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

Just saw the Nath kill film - it was a good clean, well set-up move - and I was so close to home as well!

AKFF - I was loading up the film and then pressing play. Doesn't work.

I played around with it and found that if u press play BEFORE loading the film, it works. Maybe this is idiosyncratic of my copy of AH, but if it isn't, its very counter-intuitive.

Good film though  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

I agree, the film viewer is quite counter-intuitive. Well at least it works.
