Title: Aces High Movie Database
Post by: Fulmar on April 24, 2008, 11:02:13 AM
I’ve kind of had this idea for a while and have always wanted to give back to the community as much as possible, either by helping out members of the forum or in game.  I know for a lot of you do not have easy access to web space for hosting your files, or you’re limited in bandwidth or disk space.  So my plans are to kill two birds with one stone.

Currently, the web server I co-own have 2 terabytes of storage and unlimited bandwidth.  Myself and the other owner really have never come close to use any of that storage and do not see any plans in the immediate future to fill that space, especially the unlimited bandwidth.

I’m proposing the creation of the Aces High Movie Database.  The goal of the website will be as follows:
1)   Offer free and unlimited hosting of Aces High movies to users.
2)   Centrally locate a large collection current and past movies*.

*I know a lot of people have lost or cannot find certain movies you are looking for.  They are scattered across the internet and almost impossible to find unless you know someone who knows where its stored or that site was taken down.  The hope would be to have one website to get them all.  This would not be a replacement for Youtube (since that is low quality and convenient for those on dial up etc), but rather a site to host the high quality versions of the film.

Currently, we will need to stress test the server.  I hope to have a user interface website set up eventually where each person would have their own login, a website able to search for movies….etc etc.  For now,  a simple FTP login will server as a temporary set up.  If you have a movie, or past movies (your movie or someone elses) you want shared and/or stored, please feel free to access the FTP (it is currently active).

FTP server:  ftp://derstuhl.com
Login: ahmd1
Password: test1

I recommend zipping the movie as this will allow you to direct link your movie in say your signature.  If you leave it in ‘.avi’ or ‘.wmv’, a direct link once clicked will open your movie in Media Player.  And if the movie is large enough, it will take a while to load it.

Once the file(s) are uploaded, movies can be currently accessed in an open directory:
http://www.derstuhl.com/ahmd/movies

This is the infant stage of a project I’d really like to have take off.  I’m open to suggestions, comments or concerns.
Please only upload AH movies, I will monitor the uploads for bogus file hosting.

Do you perfer the films to be in a specific formatt .AHF, .AVI, or does it not matter?
Title: Re: Aces High Movie Database
Post by: Fulmar on April 24, 2008, 02:32:07 PM
You can upload either.  It really benefits those of an actual movie format like AVI or WMV etc since these files are much larger than the game film files (AHF).

How would I upload a movie once logged on?

How would I upload a movie once logged on?

Easiet way to do it...
Find the file on your computer that you want to upload.  Right click on it and select copy.  Go back to your web browser with the that had the FTP site open.  Right click on the white background of the window and paste the file.  It should say "Copying."

Depending on your file size and your internet speed...it can take a few minutes or an hour or more.  If you need more help explaining this, I can do a 101 tutorial on it.

Fulmar, I really do like this idea.  What you are offering is great.  Monitoring it is also a great idea for many reasons.

I'm sure we can find a good way to stress test your server.

I'll be talking with ya soon.

What are download transfer speeds at for you Jannek?

I'm downloading right now one film, Old_School_German_Iron.wmv ( 134 Mb ). And download speed are ca. 260-270 kb/sec...
so it's quite good to me.

We're currently working on putting up a Website for it.  Not sure when we'll get it functioning since it will go through an alpha stage first.  But it should allow us to have registered users to access uploading, search downloads, rate downloads etc..

Ideally, I'd like to have descriptions and maybe screenshots of the movie when your browsing the movies.

WEBSITE IS UP
http://www.derstuhl.com/alpha
Okay, the website is up and currently in Beta Stage.  It's nearly fully functional.  I'd like people to try it out and see what they think.  Find any bugs or comment on it.  If the site works out in a few days, I'll register a domain, something like www.aceshighmovies.com or something.

If you want to upload a file, you have to read the FAQ section on the site.  It explains the options on how to upload files.  To highlight uploading movies, there are a few options.  You can upload a file directly off your computer to the FTP site (note the login and pass have changed).  From there I will copy it to the site.  Or, if the movie is currently hosted on a different website, there is an option on the site to transfer from one web server to the AHMD web server (this is really slick, I tried it out, transfered a 90mb movie in about a minute).  Or, you can link a movie to be listed on the site.

I will be working on a How To Use An FTP tutorial for those who do not know.  Otherwise, two FAQs explain the site and how to upload/download files.  You can email me comments or suggestions: ryan@derstuhl.com or post in this thread.

Note, people that uploaded their movies a few days ago to that FTP, the files have been moved and can be directly accessed from http://www.derstuhl.com/alpha website.  If you uploaded one to the FTP, I already added the entry to the AHMD website.

Hi Fulmar,
Congratulations on your website.  I plan on using your services in the near future.  It's moving in a direction I really think is great.  Very organized, creative, easy to use and useful.

So far I've tried to download 2 files.  Both files finished downloading prior to the file being completely downloaded.  I tried again to download both of them with the same results.  Paradigm and Der Grosse Schlag were the files I tried to download, both being zip files containing a wmv file.  End result, file is corrupt and I'm unable to view the content.  Is it just my end?
Title: Re: Aces High Movie Database
Post by: Fulmar on April 29, 2008, 12:20:16 AM
i will download it and check, thanks for the info kermit.

EDIT:  I downloaded Der Grosse Schlag and it worked fine, finished the entire download and unzipped fine.  Paradigm, however, finished completely but was corrupted.  I am in the process of reuploading Paradigm.  I'm not sure why the file was corrupt, the file size of the download is the exact same as the one on my local HD (the original I uploaded).  It's possible some type of file error occured during a move in directories where the files were stored.

I won't get to downloading them all tonight, but I will check each download to see if there are problems.

EDIT EDIT:  Correction, it appears when I download the direct link from my server (not through the AHMD website), the file worked fine, as in the Der Grosse Schlag test.  But when through the site, like Paradigm I tested, it became corrupt.  But if I went back to the direct link for Paradigm, it worked.  I will be investigating this further.

I tried a smaller file Uberfinns through the site and it worked fine.  Very strange....

Paradigm was fixed.  Der Grosse Schlag may have to be reuploaded.  I'll have to go through and download each one to see if they are bad or not.

Awsome work, Sir. May I include a link to it on our squad web site?

Halo,

If you need a HTML banner w/ link to the AHMD site, I already made one if you would like it.

Here is what it looks like:

PM me if you need the code.

Thanks for the banner Rattfink.

I try and add whatever movie I can find.  Unfortunately, a lot of 'oldies' do not have valid download links anymore, so I need people that do have them, upload them.

No problem.

Here is the HTML code for the squads that want a cool link/banner on their website to link to the AHMD site.

Skuzzy and gang.

Any reason this movie site/database can't be a permant link off the home page - or at least a sticky? This seems to be the missing link in the AH website and it can only help.

Thx
Spiffing.

Fulmar,
Very nice site. Just found it yesterday! <been slacking on the message boards lately>   :(
I see you even put my Stalins 4th movie out there...thanks!
I have several more @ http://www.kkenshome.com/media.html if you want to look at them too.
# 34, 35, and 36 are mine. There are others that are not mine, like #33 by Kingcat. Very well done movie from a long time ago. I put it on my site so I wouldn't lose sight of it or if the host was lost. Very worthy.
