Title: P-39
Post by: Rich46yo on April 25, 2008, 11:08:22 AM
Do we have any stats on this airplane yet? Cause I'll bet I havnt seen one in the air, in the MAs, in weeks.

Any P-39 drivers out there? Hows the plane doing?

Either I suck or theyre really good, because for the last 2 weeks, and P-39 I run into sends me down in flames.

Yeah I was in on some Red Star missions and its great to have the P-39 available for them. The first week you saw nothing but 39s and I was wondering how they were faring, especially since the 37mm was improved.

I pretty much upp fighters to hit land targets or for desperate base defense. I just dont furball much so I dont get a good feel for what airplanes guys are flying. I'd love to see 39s escorting TU-2s some day in AH, or, some Russian bomber.

I take her up at least once per session.  Still getting used to pros/cons on this fun bird! :aok

Currently the P-39Q is ranked #35 in overall plane "usage" with 0.97% of all kills and deaths.
It's k/d is 0.73, placing it on #47 in that ranking

I was just flying the D model last night but I was carrying the 20mm package.  Landed one kill in it.  Nothing special but the plane itself was just fine.

I might have spent more time in it but I was having too much fun in the A6M5, BF109F-4 and the P-38G last night.

I'm a big 39 fan. But I havent been flying it as much as I hoped to. But you will see me in it in the MAs soon.

The most I ever landed in a P-39 Q was like 4.

P-39 is a great buff hunter.  :aok

Thanks Lusche. How is the improved 37mm doing with GVs? Anybody use it on GVs since the new patch?

Also did the actual P-39 have rocket rails on them?

Logged my first 2 kills last night and easily out manuvered a FW190 D for 7-8 minutes until he was taken down. I was in the Q without the gondolas. Carried out an accurate dive bombing attack to begin the mayhem.

Stop into AvA this week, we're running FinRus with P-39Q as one of the planes on the Soviet side.

I'd like to find out how well the 37mm on the 39 does against Ords. What I probably do most is target ords anywheres around Rook CVs, or, on bases that threaten us. That way I feel I can use my average fighter skills to best advantage for my team, "what can I tellya, thats how i think". Many times Ive wanted to take the P-39 on these raids but the absence of rockets have stopped me. I hear tell that the 39 dive beautifully as most Yank WW-ll fighters did.

The Jug, D-40 or N, and Corsair D, are my airplanes of choice for this task. There are times I'll spend an entire night keeping ords down.

However if it only took a few 37mm shots to take an ord down maybe this airplane would be versatile enough. I just wish it had rocket rails. I think I'll give it a try anyways.

So what you're saying is that you're a "porker"? Why would anyone admit to that?  :huh

It must take great effort to be a fool 100% of the time.

I wouldn't know, I'll have to take your word for it. :)

I fly the P-39D a lot.  The thing that makes the P-39 workable is that it's low-alt speed seems middle of the pack and not horrible and that it at least isn't the worst turner in the game for stallfights.  Also, it handles well at high speeds and can get up to high speeds without hitting compressibility.  The usual stallfighting favorites (Spit's, LA's, Nik's, F4U's, etc.) will all outturn it in stallfights; but it can hold its own in a stallfight vs. P-51's, and it can beat FW 190's in stallfighting.  Also, if you've got some energy, you can turn with decent-turning planes for a while, until it degenerates into a stallfight on the deck.  In speed down low, it's roughly in the speed range of Spits (a little slower than a non-wep Spit 16, for example).

I think it is a much better plane than the P-40, which surprised me, given what you read about the P-39 from a US perspective.  The Russians seemed to love it -- and if the AH performance is like real life, I can see why.

Basically, the late-war planes are generally better planes, as you'd expect; but you can, with a little care in your flying, be competitive in the P-39.

It makes me wonder what the P-39's history would be like if it had a 2-stage supercharger or a turbocharger as, I think, was planned initially by its designers.

Flown the P-39Q a lot in the MA. Its a sweet ride. In clean configuration, sans gondos, it is a very competative dueller below 15k. It will stick with most fighters in a turning contest, has combat flaps, and it has a very good, stable dive. The armament is better, imho, than the Yak-9U or the Yak-9T, as the 37mm does not fire too fast so you dont waste ammo. A few hits from that nose cannon, and its goodbye.

With a DT you can get 40 minutes endurance in the MA. Sea level speed is 329 TAS in WEP with no gondos, so its no slouch.

Not a brag, but most of the 1 vs 1 against N1K2s in it I have won. So it can't be that bad for manueverbility or power rating, and some were vets, not just n00bsters. Its not "uber" but you have a chance in it, and thats saying something.

Its very under rated, why more dont try it I don't know, I think a lot of players get stuck in the habit of what they roll, but each to their own.

...The P-39D can be effective, but with 300hp less in the engine, is not nearly as competative, more in the league of a P-40E.

Its a very fun, and capable ride.
