Online or offline? What terrain?  What arena?  What game options are you running?  Any custom sounds?  Need to see a DXDIAG output as well.

Are you flying the Spit 16? There's been problems reported with the Spixteen flap sounds on Rangers sound pack before.

Well well, since patch 4 I could not start the game at all.

Rolled back to older Creative sound card (X-Fi) driver and everything works as it should.

Spinning clipboard is due to a dual core CPU bug in AMD and Intel laptops.  Set the game to run in  'Windows 98/ME' compatibility mode and the spinning clipboard and other isses will be solved.  It just froecs the game to run on one CPU.

DP, get rid of the cutsom sounds and see of the problem goes away.

Then completlt remove the game from the computer (also remove or rename the HTC folder), re-install the game, then reset the compatibility mode back to "Windows 988/ME".
