Title: blockbuster is a cruddy monopoly and I hate them
Post by: Mustaine on April 28, 2008, 12:02:52 AM
I killed my online account as they raised the fees $3 a month for 2 DVD's at a time ($17.99/month) and it wasn't worth it...

I haven't rented a movie in 6 months literally, I don't like them and there is no competition.

So today I fall trap to wanting to see some of the movies that have come out, I break down and rent "Alien vs. Predator", "Michael Clayton", "War", and "I am Legend".

I watch AvP, see other thread on comments, and get ready to settle into a great night of watching a movie I have eagerly anticipated seeing about an apocalyptic world only to find my DVD box EMPTY!!!! I rushed over to the store (aren't they all open until midnight??) NOPE closes at 11. I got there 10:58 and the store is dark and not a car in the lot. I drove over to the other store 3 miles away and as I was walking up ther clerk was locking up the doors. She thought i was bringing back a movie... I told her the situation and she said "there's nothing I can do".

I asked if there was an 800 number I could call to complain, she said "it's on the receipt".

Lots of $#%&^#&^#%^ good that does me, who keeps a movie rental receipt??? I went online and got the number, hours 8AM-8PM doesn't even offer to let you leave a message.

I rummaged through the garbage and found store 55727, clerk 07153 and emailed them this bogus stuff... let's see if they even respond. Stupid teenagers, thinking back you know how they open each DVD and check it while checking out? I am sure she just took off the anit-theft things and stacked them and rang me up quick... I was behind a family buying the whole store, on a gift card, and then there was $.18 left and the had the daughter pick out some candy. After the 5 minutes waiting behind some yokels (they were dude had a mullet that would make any 80's band proud) I was obviously impatient, and she rang me up as fast as she could.

^*$^*$%#&!@$%#%*%(%^*$^(*&^(&^*#$%@%^* I wanted to watch that movie tonight #$%&$&*$($^&*(%^#$!#@&^*)*$^#%!#$~!%#$@%@^#$

I use Netflix, it's much better then Blockbuster.

We use Hollywood.

But to tell you the truth, I'd prefer to just buy them instead of rent.  We ALWAYS turn in our movies late... if I know we'll end up paying nearly the same in late fees as in just buying it new, I'd prefer just to buy the thing.

Also, it's more convenient for me, since I prefer to do my grocery shopping after midnight.

I use iTunes. the selection can be limited but the movies are cheap, and you get charged per rent, not monthly.

Not had that issue with Blockbuster. I have one of their rewards cards, get a free old movie monday through thursday night if I decide I want one. Get one free rental a month. Get a free rental for every 3 movies I rent. No late fees (good for me considering I've returned a movie a month late before).
I've returned scratched movies no problem and got a free movie rental in exchange. Gotten 3 free movie rentals if hot new releases are not in stock. Last summer I rented about 20 movies and only paid for 9. The only thing that would make Blockbuster better (besides reasonable prices on concessions) would be if I could rent from one store and return the movie to another store.

We just buy the things... it usually takes us ages to get around to watching them, so Sarah just buys bulk lots at auction when she sees them pop up.
We keep what we want and resell what we don't :)

I just buy em too.
actually thats what most of the people I know do
Or I borrow them from someone else.

Or just wait for em top come out on cable.

I gave up on Blockbuster years ago.
After about the 3rd time they tried charging me a late fee for returning movies ON the due date.

All of those have been shown on DN.
Watched No Country For Old Men on DN this weekend also.
We haven`t rented a movie in a long, long time.
The movies I am sure we will like , we buy to be able to rewatch them in the future.

We stopped renting movies years ago.  Our public library is twice as close as the nearest video store, but they only have about 20% of what we might be looking for.  Anyway, they just built a new Family Video halfway between work and home.  I’ve just started renting again.  The prices are great and most movies are good for five days; kid’s movies are free.  They are open till midnight, the sign says.  Great service, never a wait.

Redbox (http://www.redbox.com)... They've got one at every McDonalds around here.  $1/night up to 25 nights, then it just stops charging you and you own the movie.  You can return the movie at any redbox location, not just the one you rented it from.  You can even reserve from a specific pickup location on their web site.  It's great for new releases and I've used it a lot.

Netflix for anything else.

I haven't been to blockbuster since they messed up my oldest sons gift cards that he was given for his birthday.
