"The internet went down for three hours this morning, plunging the nation into productivity. The outage which caused major work startages from New York to California, prevented an estimated 120 million American employees from messing around on the web at work."

Wow! They really screwed up. Seems like a lot has been lost; I really hope HTC are able to recover some of it. If I had allowed one of our servers to get damaged like this and be out of operation for a week I would probably have to look for another job.

Lesson learned here: Making a smartarse remark about about someone who is working on a weekend is always bad.  On Sunday it may incur the wrath of the almighty.

I do not need your crap Lumpy.  You have no idea what happened.

What could be recovered has been recovered.  As to eactly what happened.  it was a fluke involving an electrician installing another UPS system. An accident that was completely unavoidable.

Skuzzy, it's ALWAYS the electrician's fault.

We rebuilt here after a fire about 2 years ago.  Before that, I had CAT-5 running haphazardly around the place in a very ugly and ghetto fashion, but it worked.  The boss wanted me to design the layout for the network in the new building once it was time (awesome time for some CAT-6).  I did what he asked, but then he insisted that the electricians do all the wiring (as they were pulling all the electrical stuff anyhow).  That was fine with me, as I had my hands full trying to recover data from smoked (literally filled with smoke from the fire) HDD's.

When it was time to move in, I brought all the new computers in to the building and hooked them up.   NO-GO!
All the wires were in the right places and all landed in a central data "closet" like I had asked.  Problem was that ALL data ports in EVERY room had the punch-downs installed in exact REVERSE order than in the data closet.  Even worse,  he had hardly left any slack to play with.

So... never trust the electrician.   :lol

(It's either their fault, or, when in doubt blame COMCAST)

Hey!@ I resemble that remark!!!
Back in the late 80's I crawled through the ceilings of the NORQEB head office in Townsville running cables and soldering 100's of RS232 connections for their network when I was doing my electrical engineering degree.
Why wasn't CAT5 around wheN I needed it?

Could be worse. ThePlanet here in Houston had an electrical explosion over the weekend. It blew out the walls of the power room and took down 9000 servers run by 7500 customers, including mine.

I kinda feel bad for their techs. Most people know within minutes when one of their boxes is down. Now when the box is down and support isn't answering because there's no power to... anything... you get a lot of very angry people.

Maybe I'm special, but unlike some people at least I can count! ;)

Skuzzy violated a cardinal rule of sysadmins by working on, or allowing work to be done on the power supply while the sever was running. A predictable, scheduled server down-time is always preferable to a screw-up like this. Skuzzy threw a fit and blamed the electrician instead of saying sorry; in fact none of his posts or HTC's announcements on the web site has expressed regret for any inconvenience this might have been for their customers. I simply can't respect that.

This guy seems to have some jealousy issues.  Stalking someone and presuming to know all the background details of what happened is pretty arrogant.

He is probably reading these posts and laughing at how clever he is.  Truth is, if you want to find fault in anything, you can.  It does not take a very bright person to do it.

I know.  And while I aprpeciate the 'atta-boys', I do not live for them.  I just do the best I can everyday.

I have had to deal with his type of ilk before.  It is part and parcel with being in a service business.

There is always someone who thinks they can do it better.  The first failure of that person is not even asking any questions to determine the circumstances of the situation.

Sort of like walking into a bar, then telling the bar tender he screwed up or he would not have to be punching that guy in his face.  You can imagine what follows.
