I was watching Band of Brothers yesterday when one of the characters said something that got me thinking (always dangerous I know), one thing that is missing from the game is reload times on all the gun positions (with the exception of the large caliber weapons on tanks and ships) they all have magazines that hold in some cases thousands of rounds. I wonder what the effect on game play would be if that wirble, flak, m16, or 20mm cannon on a ship had to pause every so many rounds to reload the magazine. Watching film footage from the pacific it looked like the 40mm Bofor crews could keep a steady stream of lead flying, but could that be accomplished in a Wirlblewind? Or would the crew have to stop firing every so often to change the magazines on the four guns?

I like this idea. Perhaps it could promote more teamwork between FLAKs on the ground? One covers the others back during the reload time. Also it would give my bomber a chance to get through all the fire :). I think it would be an interesting addition.

If all 4 barrels are firing, gunner would have to stop after 80 shots (1magazine=20 rounds) to allow reloading.
If the gunner would fire only 2 barrels at a time, he could fire continously... until all 320 rounds stored in the turret were gone, that is ;)
The remaining 2880 rounds were stored in the body, the radioman had reach them up to the gunners
Our Wirbel is in fact a Wonder Weapon. Can fire all 3200 rounds at max rof and it's turret rotates almost twice as fast as the "real" one :D

Lusche, your a very informative guy. Unfortunately i didn't part get what you said, but other than that, it would be a great addition to game. Oh and only one bomber pilot agreed so you can't really notice only those guys wanting it :lol. If ive noticed something is that all the ships, including the CV don't have .50 caliber machine guns (Browning machine gun), or im i blind and there are? :huh

Soulyss is a bomber pilot too.

Good eye, my bad. :aok

You can tell if they're a bomber pilot because they have a SAPP signature. Or if they are in the 80th FS "Headhunters". This means they fly the P-38. It is a popular light bomber.

I thought my comment was pretty innocuous, but apparently Skuzzy didn't.
Oh, and by the by Mensa..I was in SAPP before you were..I'm just inactive :)

Bombers wouldn't be affected by reload times, as they're machine guns feed from a belt (unless you're flying a Ju88). I don't think .50's would have been mounted on ships as they would be pretty much useless at such long ranges.

.50s were mounted on American ships, but as you said were found to be pretty much useless against a/c (especially kamikazes) as the war went on and were replaced by 20mm and 40mm mounts whenever possible.

Could you PM me the comment that was deleted? I'm curious now :). Was it "notice only the bomber pilots..." ?

If I remember correctly, yeah it was something to that effect Mensa, personally I thought it was a pretty funny little jab in my direction. :)
The questions and design decisions get more interesting if you look at it from the gunners on bombers. My initial thought was aimed purely at the flaks and M16's. I hadn't even considered manned crew positions in bombers. Technically speaking I think most the american bombers that I've been in or seen pictures of has the guns feeding from ammo boxes that I imagine held a few hundred rounds, not sure off hand if the ammo limits in the game represent the single box of ammo or a standard load containing several boxes of ammunition. If the later is the case the way the guns are slaved to a singel point in space when firing you could potentially have the situation where several gun positions all ran dry at the same time, and have to reload, this seems like a bad thing for gameplay where buffs are concerned.

Me too, got a laugh out of it :).

I would count Soul as a good post-ER, it be more realistic having to change magazines every time we run out of ammo. :)
