of the absurd amount of pictures i've taken in the past month and a half of having this camera (canon s5 IS, good enough for what i do with it) a couple were bound to come out decent.

Looks nice. What settings on the camera did you use

Just got a D300 about 2 weeks ago. Love it, but I think I need to shell out for a better lens with VR.

i usually keep it in a semi-automatic mode, and just adjust the aperture or exposure time as necessary, and if necessary adjust the contrast later on.

Vorticon, your first pic of the bird poop on the rock was stunning- really, I could almost smell it. However, your second pic was less than inspiring...I mean, power lines? I don't get it. Is Mr.Black in that pic???

Rips what do you use for macro shoots? its crappy lens or you did not sharpen them in post process?

It's a crappy lens for macro application...35-70mm f/2.8D AF. A couple of them I post processed, not all. It's probably my eyesite too, its not the best.
I've noticed that good focus falls off severely from the focus point at a low f-stop which I'm not happy about with this lens. For the waterfall shot, I used a slow shutter speed to blur the water.
Do you have any recommendations for macro lenses? I use Nikon stuff. I don't want to spend more than $1000 though...
-
I think the macro shots with a short focal length are kinda cool.

Thanks. I do too, but these really fall off drastically, IMO, or it could be my composition or position when focusing...either way the bokeh is dramatic.

Great pics from the usual suspects, here's last saturday, my kid supervised by my dog. :D

Thx, finally nice to be able to have a day off ... and 80s temp to enjoy my little homies. Life is good!

well thanks :D
really not a difficult to reproduce shot, assuming you can get 4 feet out from the shore on boulders, and have ice still on the river to set the camera on...

For what i heard 35-70 is one of the sharpest nikon lenses, mby your copy is bad. Last week i where considering getting that model instead of 24-70 2.8 (witch is superb, heh but price sux)
As for micro recommendation, for nikon you have 2 options in this price range.
60mm f2. , i pick up mine for 200$ but it was very much beaten in appearance, lots of dents on the corpus. But optically ok, as you can see. . Im happy with this lens.
Or 105 mm f2.8 but not new VR version
Same good is tamron 90 macro, very good lens , matching nikon lenses.
I would preffer little longer lens then my 60 mm, but i got it for very good price.
