while playing this game i was reminded of a game i used to play many years ago: Jane's WWII fighters. it was a good game and one of the first pc games i played. it was nicely detailed (maybe even better than this game) and was fun to play. the realism was top notch (ie flak bursts and real damage). i still have it too.

You should load it up, Bucky, you'll probably find that nostalgia makes things seem better than they actually were.
I do remember this game and it was really good.

I remember as a kid thinking SubLogic's version of Flight Simulator for the Commodore 64 was awesome.

How many played Dauntless and Air Force board games by Battleline and then Avalon Hill?
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3607
I spent countless hours as a teen playing those games.
-
I messed around with that game a bit. In fact I still have both it and my sidewinder stick I mostly never used. At the time I was always amazed at what kind of world could be created in software. I used to create missions in the game and happily blast drone bombers out of the sky.
I never thought a game like AH could ever exist. But, there was a time when I never thought a computer game could exist.
-
Janes WW2 Fighters has to be what?...10 years old? All aspects, including the flight modeling and graphics were pretty darned good.

I did.
But as this kind of hobby was almost non-existant in Germany, I almost always had to play solo :(
But even today I get "Achtung Spitfire!" and "Over the Reich" out of the shelf and play around a little bit. Quite amazing games, especially when compared to the rather flawed Air Force series ;)

I used to play Janes years ago... I always thought European Air War was more fun though.

I spent countless hours as a teen playing those games.
Friends and I played Risk, Axis and Allies (with highly modified rules) and those old board games with the hexagonal grid maps.
In fact, one of those hexagonal grid games (Europe), we xeroxed and mounted on cardboard backing, then we xeroxed all the pieces and mounted those on cardboard, one set for each of us. Then we set the maps the same and pinned the pieces in. That way, we could carry our boards to each others houses and play, then we synced the boards and brought them home. Even when we weren't together playing, we were studying the maps formulating strategies for the next rounds of play.
I still have copies of all those games in boxes somewhere.
-
Never had the opportunity to play this one,but I would sure like to find it and try it out one day.
Hope its even better than the detail in Microsofts CFS3. GRRR! :rock

Never did Janes but I did European Air War online on the Zone, 6 max in an arena on dialup
My first was Their Finest Hour on the Amiga (with half meg ram upgrade!), FPS of 5 was a luxury

Had a copy too!

The only great thing about Janes WWII Fighters was the graphics. Otherwise it was just a glorified arcade shooter. European Air War wasn't as pretty, but was vastly superior as far as features and simulation.
However Aces of the Pacific is STILL the greatest WWII air-combat sim ever made.
-
Chuck Yeager Air Combat
-
F15 Strike eagle III from Mircroprose was one of my all time favourites :D
Now I feel old :cry
-
F15 Strike eagle I had that for the commodore 64 I feel old to :D
-
River Raid was where it was at. :)
-
Jane's USAF was a cool game too. More arcade than realistic, but the graphics were top notch.

I had the same game as my first IBM game on a brand new 8088 machine. It was the game that convinced me to drop Apple computers.
In High School and College we played the Avalon Hill games as well as the SSI games like Foxbat and Phantom. When we sold the house I packed up about 15 or 20 different games and gave them to my stepdaughter to e-bay and see what she could get for them. A couple were practically unopened boxes.

1st 'sim' I played was F18 Interceptor on Amiga...we were commenting on how realistic it'd look in a few years, it has indeed improved :)

I liked EAW better than Jane's.The game I spent a lot of time with was Panzer General. If it would work on WinXP,I would still be playing it.

Played those some. Started on one -- was it Air Force, or 8Th AF, or Over the Reich? Also played a lot solo...no one around had the patience for those games. Thought over the Reich had balance problems, only came out one way.
Really liked The Third Reich. Loved the combination of operational gaming and economic components. For me, the countless hours spent on PanzerBlitz and Tobruk. Some great hex based times!

Actually lately since I dont have a rig for AH at the moment I've checked out Dosbox and have rediscovered Ghengas Khan.
Still very addictive
-
I have it still sitting here and play it from time to time just to laugh at how far we've come. It's a simple game compared to AH with no interaction or real time feel to it. Still is fun to up when bored or intardnet is down and fly around killing stuff. :D
I also have an F18 simulator for the computer and a vietnam sim game for the playstation, fave ride is the F4U phantom in the vietnam one for PS.
Still none of them beat AH for the interactive play. :cry
-
Started with Chuck Yeager Air Combat, then Falcon 4.0, then Aces of the Pacific, F15, F117 Nighthawk, Secret Weapons Of the LuftWaffe, The list goes on and on.

My blast from the past is F-117 strike fighter.
I can still see the poly's of a Harpoon hitting a ship in my minds eye.
-
Battlehawks 1942 here.
I had both Jane's and EAW. I loved the soundtrack Jane's had though. Wish I could hear it again.
-
F15 Strike eagle I had that for the commodore 64 I feel old to :D
Buddy of mine had that for the 64.
I had Gunship..
Even won the CMO
I remember doing it.
I was "in the zone" LOL
-
Remember wasting time playing
"Defender Of The Crown"?
Well you can play it online here LOL

Their Finest Hour was my first ever PC flight sim.
I remember flying one mission over and over until my pilot had a high rating, then renaming the file over about ten times.I then used them as my wingmen. The Germans only made the coast once after that.
-
On the PC there wasn't much in the way of wingmen that I recall. I did have it down to the point where I could make a kill consistently using only 8 rounds. Setting up a scenario where you got successive waves of 8 enemy fighters was easy and so were they.
-
I remember flying one mission over and over until my pilot had a high rating, then renaming the file over about ten times.I then used them as my wingmen. The Germans only made the coast once after that.
I did that in X-wing. I even backed up my pilot file so if I died or was captured I could restore without starting at the lowest rating. :D
The latter X-wing games were sort of disappointing in that regard. There was a real loss of atmosphere.
-
i loved Aces of the Pacific

I've got a copy of that Luftwaffe game. In ways that was a great game. Hard to play solo though.
