Title: Goodbye, farewell, amen
Post by: Chairboy on June 04, 2008, 06:01:17 PM
Hello,

I think it may be time for me to move along, as I understand the wishes of the fine folks who run the board.  I respect their decision, and harbor no ill will.

A few months ago, I received the 'Probation' label for posting an animated GIF of a dog jumping out of a car in the 'Funny images' thread and for responding to someone else's Rot13'd text with the same.  I requested clarification and was told what I had violated, and I understood.  I re-read the rules (I recommend doing so occasionally, it's easy to forget some of them) and have continued in my O'Club career with care and respect.  As time passed, I realized that there was no timeframe attached to the badge and started to wonder.  I didn't really want to let it get to me, but it's been sitting there for a few months now with no sign of disappearing, and this may sound funny, but it's really starting to bug me.  After a certain point, it felt like I was wearing a "scarlet letter" of sorts that automatically places all of my posts in the 'This was written by a troublemaker and deserves no further consideration' category.

Like everyone else, my presence here is 'at will' and I accept that if it is so decided, my account can be removed at any time.  After a few months of this label, I'm starting to get the feeling that perhaps I'm being gently urged out the door.  I can only assume that the fact the 'probation' label hasn't gone away yet means that it's a permanent mark, and that as such, I am no longer welcome.

I appreciate the hard work the HTC team has put into creating and maintaining this BBS, and I've had some amazing times here.  The sense of community has really been fantastic, and some of my most memorable moments here include sharing the birth of my sons, my search for my brother when he was killed in the Christmas 2004 Tsunami (and the support given), documenting the lessons as I learned to fly, and more.  These are just my own personal experiences, I've also been with many of you as you've gone through the same types of things, and my family and I have spent time talking about and sending our best wishes to those of you in troubled situations.  I've laughed, I've cried, and I've made some great friends, a few enemies, and a bunch of very respected adversaries.

The reason I'm writing this is because I didn't want to just disappear.  I respect HTC's defacto decision and while I am saddened, I will choose instead to focus on the years of fantastic times I've had here instead.  Skuzzy, mods, it's a thankless job, but you guys have created a real community, and it's been great.  I haven't found a place yet elsewhere where I feel as comfortable and welcome as I did here in the past, and that's a measure of the success you've had in putting something special together.

I'll still drop in once in a while and read some of the threads, but I'm not sure I really feel comfortable contributing anymore for the reasons I mentioned above.

I wish all of you well, and if anyone wants to see what I'm up to, I'm still at hallert.net or in email as ben@vipmail.com.  The world might tilt on its axis tomorrow and dump me back in your laps, but on the likely chance that it won't, au revoir and thank you all for the ride, it's been a blast.

We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.
Keep smiling through, just like you always do,
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.

Best regards,

Ben Hallert

You might try a phone call to Skuzzy. Put a voice to your text. He may then find it harder to stonewall your feelings in this regard.

Ben,
I haven't been around the BBS as long as some, but I certainly enjoyed your contributions, whether it be to a spirited discussion or some neat pics you took in the air.
Hopefully you'll stick around, but I do agree that it would be rather off putting to have it hung on you permanently.
Agree or disagree with them, there's many I would not like to see leave the boards because I think they make a worthwhile impact because unlike some, there's some thought put into the posts.  You're one. Hope to see you around, if for no other reason than just to update us on your flights!  :)

And congrats, Aquashrimp, classless as always.  :aok

Sorry to see you go Chair, there are others on this thread that deserve that badge far more then you, or deserve to be gone permanently... but oh well...

This forum has been on the decline for a long time a few more of the intelligent posters like yourself leave and it won't be worth the time at all. I really don’t think the "rules" have helped this place that much.

Bah!

Chair , Dont let that bother ya.
We sure as hell dont give a damn about the label.
Fact of the matter is I didnt even notice it till you just said something

As Bluto said

"WAS It OVER WHEN THE GERMANS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR??"

As Otter Said
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests. We did. But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!"

There is only one thing to do in a time like this!

TOGA! TOGA! TOGA TOGA!

well, if i were to have a vote, a few of the probeys would be back on track...just a few.
(not mac tho, he looks right at home in his prison outfit.)

personally, i respect your decision chairboy, but i think it's a great loss to both yourself and the community.

i also think that you have stated your position fairly and with regards to decorum and for the feelings and interests in others and it certainly would be useful to know the extent of any probations in the future, but i have to agree that a phone call first might have been a better route.

that said, none of the made up names in this thread that have called you a whiner have ever captured my interest or contributed anywhere near the thoughtful interest that you have and i salute you for it.  you have not behaved like a child and i have never known you to be anything less than reasonable.

this place becomes an extended family and it can be messy like family too.

(i have come to think of skuzzy as uncle skuzzy.  he does magic tricks at christmas.  :))

i hope that you will reconsider your decision, and i would also hope that uncle skuzzy might clear up the matter of your status.  i dont imagine it to be personal... if i were to guess i would think that it is probably a case of way too many fish to fry and that it is not a huge priority given the workload of managing this thing with all of its recent problems and keeping an MMPOG online on top of that.  this is a pretty new BBS system, and precedent has yet be completely established given it's new powerful features

i hope you will reconsider, but i wish you well chair.  regardless.

Have you called and talk to them about it?  Did you ever stop and think that maybe they have more important things to do at the moment than review who gets off BBS probation?  Maybe they have an "every 6 months" review policy, who knows.  Sounds a little like you're jumping the gun, or maybe you just want attention....maybe you and Serenity should team up.

C'mon Chair... give the Skuzz a chance. I wonder if he has time to review the lists of who is in which status.

Before you jump ship, ask him what's up. If he stiff arms you, well, maybe it is time to go.

If he smacks his head in the Polish salute and changes your status.... there ya go.

I'm bettin' on the Polish salute. You haven't been that bad a boy to get coal in yer stockin' 2 years in a row. ;)

I enjoy having you on the board..  lots of folks do.  Most I would bet...It matters not if we agree or not on some things.  You keep me on my toes and I have learned some things.. can't ask for more than that.

My guess?   No one has the time to review the whole "probation" thing.

Whats sad is this:
The BBS was just recently gone thru a MAJOR issue and had to be rolled back...to may IIRC. So in actuality your probation in BBS time hasnt been that long.

The actual point I was wanting to make tho is that with all thats been going on Skuzzy polly just fergot. Aint nothing personal and I'd hate to see ya go.
I think it would be a real shame if you left and it was all over a simple thing like being to busy keeping the BBS running to realize that a member has been on probation status too long

The point of this thread was to either (A) guilt Skuzzy into removing a pretty much meaningless tag from Chairboy's handle, or (B) to show how big of a baby this dude is.

A probation tag is merely a mild warning.  Considering the fact that a person can be banned, and come back a while later.

I don't particularly like Chairboy from run-ins I've had with over the years.  This just proves what I thought about him.

As one who suffers from a mild case of OCD, I can see how the probation tag could grate on your nerves after a while.  But you have to remember that you're being much harder on yourself than anyone else is.  Aside from a few like shrimp boy, the old timers know and respect you and therefore the probation tag holds no weight.

I've always enjoyed reading your posts, even when I disagree.  After all, most of us have far more in common than not.

If you don't reconsider, at least drop in from time to time and show us your latest flame thrower or Halloween costume.  And if the Boston PD goes postal over some more light brights, I'll expect you front and center mister.

Good luck to you, what ever you decide.

Chair I don't always agree with you but I'm of the mind that the folks at HTC are too busy to keep up with the probation tags.  As a previous poster said give them a call personally and work it out.  I think it would be a loss to the group if you bailed.  And this comes from a guy who generally looks at 'goodbye' posts and thinks 'attention w@#$%'.  *shrug* just my .02

I personally think that HTC does not know how serious some of us take the game and the BB.
When they squelch people in the game and ban people on the BB, It becomes an issue of
insult to these individuals involved....HTC may think its funny or they do it because they don't
like someone....but it is an insult to the players of this game.It seems that more and more people are being put
on communication probation in the game for saying something that "may offend" someone.
I've been a gamer on many many different games over the last 20 years...never have I seen this kind
of censorship in any game I've played.

I don't know you at all Chairboy, but if the only reason you're leaving is because of the probation thing, then I'd say ignore it and stay.  From what you posted and your website, you seem pretty normal, nice and reasonable.  I know that it's up to you, but my advice would be to not take the probation thing personally, and then rethink whether you want to stay or not.
