Hi all.
I'm a relative newcomer to the DA furball area. I've been to the DA to duel a few times, but just lately the last few weeks I've been popping into the furball area.
I have a few questions.
First, why would someone HO in the DA? Speaking strictly for myself, I'm heading into the DA for a couple of reasons:
1. quick fights
2. fly a variety of planes with no regard to how I'm 'scoring' in them
I've noticed that there's no scoring in the DA, and you don't spend nor accumulate perks. So, again, why HO?
See, I can understand HO'ing in the MA even though I don't really enjoy having it happen to me. In the MA you get something for a kill...perks, a kill for your score, and your name in lights at the end of the sortie. In the DA there's no real incentive to live except for the name in lights thing, so what's the point of going for the easy, quick kill?
Second: and since we brought up the name in lights, what's the point of landing kills in the DA? You don't get anything but the name in lights for landing the sortie, and how hard is it really to rack up kills in the furball area? A skilled player could sit up at 8-10k in a Tempest and pick dudes off all night without an enemy getting a single clean shot...pretty much for as long as you feel like doing that. Why in the world would I WTFG someone who HO'd and picked there way to a bunch of kills, and why would you even bother landing them?
Again, speaking for myself, I already have enough places to track a score and fight 'for real' whatever that is. If you're into that thing, I can see flying a certain way in the MA so you can impress yourself and others. But for the life of me I can't understand that mentality in the one arena that just doesn't reward winning and surviving in any way. Personally, I landed the first few sorties in there out of habit, but lately I just auger the plane when I'm done fighting or out of ammo provided I'm not totally engaged. Heck last night I had a great time sticking on this P-47N's tail even though I was out of ammo...sort of mentally killing him.
I hope this doesn't come across as a total whine, that's not my intention. But the mentality I found, especially last night, and especially with a particular squad, sort of surprised me.
The landing kills thing, even though it's not my thing, I can sort of understand for the ego stroke. The HO's though, that really does bother me. I'm trying to figure out why I kill when, no matter what I do, I'm going to die at the end of my sortie anyway. I think it has to do with expecting to have a good fight and then not having one; it's somehow unsatisfying. And I hate getting killed when I'm holding fire on a merge. I'm talking about the clean merge where the guy opens up 200 yards out before you have a chance to respond. I'm talking about the guy that has you pinned on the deck 3v1 and shoots you in the face instead of going for a clean kill while you're evading his two buddies.

I think there is a large percentage of the people in the DA at furball central do not have the ACM skills to do anything other than HO.
Sad comment, but I believe it to be true.
Another sad comment is that they are in the wrong arena. They would gain much more from the TA rather than the DA.
-
I just expect everyone to HO at furball lake.
The landing thing, though, that kills me. The bragging on 200 afterwards is even better.

Well that's probably ture of most of the habitual HOers in the game. Not only in the DA.

Well, if you have 8 kills of Tempests, Nikis, Spit16s, etc in a P40, would you try to rub it in to the gang bangers by landing them or would that make you a dweeb?
Second, the DA furball area is not the DA. It is a furbal with all the qualities of it. HOing, picking, ganging, running, etc. If you want a fight, ask. I am sure I would say yes :aok

I think I see the problem.
You are flying straight into the enemy guns and expecting him not to shoot.
Interesting.
Try merging onto the enemy planes tail. Bet he won't HO you then.
-
Hey Ded,
I don't think landing kills makes you a dweeb under any circumstances, no matter what you're flying.
I'm not going to WTG dudes landing 3 kills in a C-hog though, which seemed to be the norm last night.
And, I'm tired of dueling you, it always ends the same way no matter what I'm flying. ;)

You've been a member since 2003.
Don't act like you don't know what I'm taking about here.

haven't been in da for a looong time. when i do duel someone, if they're not commin right back up, i auger, then re-up. i don't ho. i try to learnt o really fight to earn my kills
as for bragging? i suck. therefore i do not brag

I don't do it for the perks, because there's nothing overly fun to fly (aside from the Spitfire 14, but that's pretty easy to get hold of).
I'm a bad enough pilot that I take any shot I can get, because I know that I probably won't get another. What usually happens is that my enemy gets on my 6, I have absolutely no clue how to get him off of it (aside from an overshoot, which usually doesn't work for me), and then I get shot down. Not always, but often.
As to the name in 'lights', yes it's nice and satisfying, but there's also something fun about landing your plane rather than getting sent back to the tower.

P.S. Are you saying that if you've gotten kills in the DA by methods that these upright, rigid, old-timers dislike (e.g. head-ons), you shouldn't land them just because it's what? amoral? it annoys old-timers? That's ridiculous. If you're bored, fine go and crash - I don't care. But crash because you got the kills a certain way....???

Yesterday I was flying against a P-47 that had about 2k on me. I was in a Hellcat. He had both speed and Alt on me and yet he still turned, aimed his nose right at me, and not only HO'd me but also rammed me. Of course the game said I rammed him but looking at the reality of the situation how could I have possibly rammed him?
It was actually a fairly respected member whos played for awhile. I wont name him but I did call him out on 200. I called him out after giving him plenty of time for the apology that never came. Funny, but I always say "sorry" if I unintentionally ram someone and its my fault. Or, if it looks like I unintentionally stole a kill.
Exactly what year was it when saying "sorry" went out of style? And we wonder why the world is going to hell?

I'm sorry.
I thought this was the " I HO'd a guy and he shot me in the face" thread.
I'll look around and see if I can find your thread and post a reply.
So sorry.
Carry on.

Take a look at this thread (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,233772.0.html), toonces, it's not really old, just a month IIRC, and you can understand why the furball area and DA in general have become like that.

OK, lets cut the BS here. We keep accusing the new guys of all this but guess who they learned from. When the furball area in the DA got started, I was repeatedly asked to go there and join the fight by some of "fighters". So after the name calling was done with, I joined in. Guess what, as soon as I got into a fight, one of the bad arse pilits that want to give hints to others :rofl on how to play the game, dives in for the pick. After the third pick I asked what was the deal with that and the responce I got from the vets/dog fighters/aces/bad arse pilits was "comon Ded, its a furball. What do you expect". (I hear some have moved to Tibet since but lets cut the BS). When the vets do it and defend it, the new guys will follow. So, without reading that thread, I can tell you in general how things have become like that. We made them like that :O

Yossarian,
I'm not sure you understand a few things. Or perhaps I misunderstand a few things.
Kills in the DA do not count. By that I mean that you do not get perks for them and they do not contribute to your score.
The question I think being asked is "Why land kills in the DA?"
If kills do not help with score nor earn perks then why not fly until you get killed? If you run out of gas then crash and get another plane quicker because you are not penalized for a death and time is time even if it is counted in money.
I, on the other hand, have actually landed kills in the DA because I'm a geek and I want all the young whippersnappers to know to fear the Hellcat they see coming at them.

@ Blooz,
I'm sure you've read enough "I hate HO's because of a, b, c..." That's not the point of my thread. I know the simple answer is "if you don't want to get shot, don't get in front of the other guy's guns." I got that Blooz, I got it the first time I started a HO thread, and I got it everytime somebody like me starts another one. There are times, no matter how hard I try, where I simply cannot avoid a head on merge.
In general, not always, I hold off on shooting. Not always, but most of the time. It just depends. But, in the DA I held my guns everytime. Why? Because what possible difference does a kill mean in the DA to me other than the fun of achieving it? I get no points, it doesn't count for a ranking, in fact is it even possible to see how I did in there a year from now? So why shoot a guy in the face instead of fighting him?
It's an honest question.
@Yossarian,
I appreciate your response.
The answer could be, for some folks, they just like pissing people off. Others maybe just have this thing where they shoot anything that crosses into their sites.
Is that it then? Is the solution to getting aggravated when I lose a HO engagement to just start doing it all the time no matter what, and then I can't get mad when it happens to me?
@Yossarian,
If you want to land your planes in the DA, go right ahead. Like I said, I've only been in there a handful of times since I've been playing this game, but it seems like a waste of good fighting time to me. But that's just me. The truth is, if I start landing my kills I'm going to start looking at my K/D, and if I look at my K/D I'm going to try to improve it, and doggone it, I already fly like that in the MA.
I don't think it's dweeby like I said above. It does feel a bit weird to auger a plane, it's not something I usually do, but it seems like a waste of my time to drive all the way home to land DA kills for no good reason.
@Dedalos,
Bud, it took me a year, but I think I've finally come around to your way of thinking. As many times as we argued about the AvA setup, I see your point very clearly now.
You were right, I was wrong.
No hard feelings gents, just honest questions here. <S>

Furball area is nothing but target practise. So what, people try to ho. if you dont want a ho'er challenge someone to a duel.
If you knew what you were doing you wouldn't complain that much about hoers. they're just low skilled/new. if not practise evading HO's... i can't remember the last time a wannabe ho'er has hit me and not had me get on his six.
when I see someone frequently complain about a ho'er I automatically rate them as poor.
The only bad thing about furball area are people who fly around in gangs at alt in zero's. whole point of elevated fields is so that you'll be able to dive down into the action quickly.. unfortunately people don't do this. they start grabbing for the moon. oh well, I get to practise reversal snapshots.

Here's the honest answer.
It saves time.

The thing I like about the guys that ho in the da is that it gives an opportunity to learn the best ways to avoid the ho without any reprocusions on our score. :salute

i have to agree with dedalos on this one. and then they take the tactics into the MA's and we wonder why they do it in there. Good call Dedalos! <S>
