Sec. Gates asked for the Cheif of Staff and the SecAF today. He cited the B52 nuke incident and the boeing contractor incident but I think it runs deeper and it's also a political move.
The both are my opinion only:
The deeper part is the (percieved) lack of effort in the war on terror from the Air Force. In addition the Air FOrce has been low balling it's budget for the last couple of years and makeing several "unfunded" requests.
The political move: To appease John Mcain. He LOATHS the Air Force after the tanker debacle and has been after heads ever since.

As an Active duty Air Force member I think the moves are great. Personally I can't stand the AIr force as of late. It's priorities, while appearing to move to a more combat warrior mindset, have been anything but. It's all just a check in the box on some powerpoint slide for some general somwhere.

No offense GS but that's been the perception of the AF for decades from the viewpoint of other services. I agree, it's high time the AF adopted the kick-ass warrior mentallity.

One of my favorites...
Right now... somewhere in the world... there is a Navy Ensign who has been underwater in a sub for the past 6 months straight saying to himself "I love my job."
Right now... somewhere in the world... there is an Army Pvt humping a 50lbs pack through knee deep mud saying to himself "I love my job."
Right now... somewhere in the world... there is a Marine Lance Corporal humping a 100lbs pack through chest deep mud saying to himself "I love my job."
Right now... somewhere in the world... there is an Airforce Lt who's computer froze while playing solitaire saying to himself "I hate this (^%#% job."
Joking aside... I hope this shake up helps the many badarse professionals in the Air Force do their job even better :rock :aok

I agree about the perception. While perception is reality the USAF over the last 3 years has tried to shift to that warrior airman concept but it has mearly been on paper. To this day Airman in boot camp spend more time rolling T-shirts than cleaning weapons.

Actually....we just "upgraded" to office and outlook 2007 and our old computers run SOOO SLOOWWW now. Checking one important email now takes minutes instead of seconds. I wonder what was wrong with our old stuff......it seems it gets replaced just cause there's money in the budget. Unfortunatly they havn't upgraded our 1ghz dells in 3 or 4 years. There's some truth to that post. I sit there and wait 5 minutes just to log onto my computer and then another 5 minutes just to open outlook and then another 5 minutes just to open say an appointment listing.

The Air Force hasn't been professionally administered since 1947 and it shows.
:P :P :P

But Mav when the Army is neck deep in the shirt, you know they cry for AIRPOWER. :)

Don't Army guy drive the Apaches :D

Yep they call for it. Between the crew rest, the trips to the O'Club, the golf course and occasionally returning from the PX they might fly a sortie or two. That is if they have allocated sorties to do ground support instead of looking for the bad guy over the top of the globe...... :P
There are some guys who really do a great job but some Generals want to drop the A-10. Dumb dumb freaking idea.

I shot steve down in 7 seconds, FAIL! Oh I know why, lead on your wings!

The Air Force has done a good job for so many decades it is generally taken for granted. Equipment gets older than the people who operate it, yet the Air Force is the umbrella that makes so many other military options possible. Not to excuse any problems, and there always will be some, but to renew the perspective. It's amazing how many options come to mind when enemy airpower cannot restrict them.
