:( What a great man and i still remember watching him as a youngster. When i grew up in the 60's/70's he was the voice of the olympics and other major sports. To this day i can remember him covering the Olympic hostage/terrorist situation. Also a WWII veteran. May he rest in peace. :salute

I miss the Wide World of Sports. Jim McKay saying "Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports..."
Arm Wrestling, Acapulco Cliff Diving, Camel Racing, stuff you didn't see on other sports programs. Now you have ESPN and ESPN 2 and when was the last time you saw surfing or a full gaynor into the waves?
In my mind, Jim McKay is the voice of sports, and the voice of the Olympics.

The thrill of victory! The agony of defeat!
Great show. Great commentator.
RIP Jim....we'll miss you.

Yup I grew up with him on the tv.

I remember watching the Olympics in '72. The whole crew looked so haggard during it all. Not an easy time to be on the air just about nonstop.

I didn't realize he was 86. I will never forget his voice or the WWS shows that he did all over the world. Great sports and not just the ones that we all watch here non-stop now.

We were all glues to our TV sets for the swimming competition. A guy from our home town was in the finals of the 200 butterfly. He won a bronze, losing to Marc Spitz and Gary Hall Sr. I remember being very torn as to whether the games should continue or not.
McKay was a great commentator, like they said on the news this morning "he made the mundane notable, and the historic human."

Yeah, I remember him as a really classy guy, always loved the Wide World of Sports. "Spanning the globe" indeed.
