Title: Oh, what a day!
Post by: Donzo on June 07, 2008, 08:51:36 PM
What a day!

Today my stepson, Zach, ran in 3 events at the Minnesota State High School Track and Field meet...the 4X800 M, 800 M run, and the 4x400 M.
He ran the anchor leg in both of the realys.

Results:
4x800 - They finished 3rd.
4x400 - They finished 2nd.
800 - Zach won and set a new all time state meet record of 1:49.69!

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okabmnAZtY0

He won the 800 last year as a sophomore and defended it spectacularly today.  His time of 1:49.69 places him as the 3rd best in the nation this season.

Man, what a day....mom and dad are really proud of him (to say the least!)

Next, Zach and I will be traveling to Columbus, OH for the Junior National meet.

1:49 is a great time!  Anyone who has ever run a race will tell you the 800 is by far the most demanding. Not quite a sprint, not quite a distance race.... just a royal 'B'.

Hats off to Zach.

OUTSTANDING!!! Congrats to Zach and his parents. Kudos for supporting his track and for doing an obviously good job raising a son.

1:49?

Holy ****, that's serious speed!

Had he run either of the other events before that?

Either way, that right there is NCAA-bound stuff.

Time ter start a-sniffin' aroun' fer some ather-letics skolarships there, methinks.

Congrats!

Oh its an all-out sprint.  5km is the mark where the term 'distance' begins to get used.

Actually the 1600 (mile) and 3200 (2 mile) are considered "distance".  The 800 is right on the border but is generally considered a mid-distance event..it's longer than a sprint but not quite an endurance race (which the 5 K is).

Thank you all for the comments!  Zach thanks you too!

I got so caught up in his performance in the 800 M that I neglected to elaborate on his performance anchoring the 4x400 M relay.

4x400M video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGpggbleq9g (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGpggbleq9g)

Zach ran the 4x400 just 30 minutes after he ran in the 800M.  Check out his down the stretch sprint to the finish line...he almost won!  A 47.2 sec split on the anchor leg.

Wow!  What a weekend!

Update:

Zach ran at the Junior National Championships this past weekend in Columbus, OH.  After qualifying on Friday he went on to run in the finals Saturday night.  The race was amazing and Zach took 2nd place with a new personal best time of 1:48.64.  This is a also a new high school record for Minnesota.

His 2nd place finish qualified Zach to compete as part of Team USA in the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland next month.  Unfortunately Zach had to have his passport with him in Columbus, OH in order to be eligible for this.  Lesson learned.  We already applied for a passport before the meet but knew it wouldn't be here in time.  There is always next year and we'll be ready  :aok

Here's the video of the finals:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za1I9N17pps

Have you ever done competitive track&field?

Well done!

Looks like Zach stole second from a guy who forgot to finish the race. Either that or the guy hit a major brick wall. If Aquashrimp would like a lesson on whether this is an "all-out sprint" watch the video and see what happens to the 2 guys who are WAY out in front after 400 meters...

Passports: can be done in one day as long as you go to a passport center, and show that you are traveling within two weeks. Costs just a tiny bit more than the 'expedited' cost.  google passports & see which site is the state.us.gov or something like that. Or google 'passport agency;' then find the one closest one to you.

Call their automated # to secure an appt. ~ the automated call is a hassle, but is quite handy for getting a speedy passport! =)

Thanks again for the comments!

As far as the passport thing goes...this is something the USATF (USA Track & Field) will not bend on.
Quote
Athletes MUST have a valid passport with them at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships with an expiration date of at least January 2009 in order to be considered for selection to the team. There will be no exceptions to this policy.

So it's a lesson learned.  Next year Zach will be ready!

We recently found out Zach was named Gatorades' Minnesota Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Well, that kinda sucks.  The AAU would have been more lenient.  Junior World is VERY prestigious!  Good luck for next year!    :salute    :salute

Looks like his college scholorship should be a shoe-in (no pun intended).  If UCLA or USC don't calll I'd be surprised.

Wow!! I am proud for you.

Mind if I tell a story. My youngest daughter, Jennifer, or Jennerator as we call her, tried out for tennis. She did okay, nothing fabulous but she was way way over weight at 224lbs her freshman year. She's 5'9". So she joined the cross country team to lose weight. At first she could barely even finish a race and sometimes walked when she thought no one was looking. By her senior year she was #2 or 3 on the team and even won a couple events. You would often hear the coaches saying "Jenn you're my idol".
Then she went on to college and eventually became #2 there. The #1 runner set school records and almost became a national champion. A couple of years ago she placed 10th in the Indy Mini for her age group. Now she weighs just 125lbs. I cannot be any more proud of her.
