And things are going well. Interestingly enough it's not something I decided to do but just happened. I smoked my last cig lastnight at 11 pm and didn't feel like going to the store to get more. $4/pack = $4/gallon gas...so, getting tired of having to shell out more and more $ for my sins, I decided I just didn't feel like getting more because of the cost and was feeling incredibly lazy. I had bought a 3-tube pack of Commit lozenges about this time last year but quit using them after about 3 lozenges. I decided to use them lastnight in lieu of getting some more cigs. Surprisingly they didn't taste as bad as I remembered and the first one I took did a pretty good job of calming me down. Right now I'm on my 5th one in 24 hours and doing pretty damn good. The first 24 hours have always been very difficult for me but this time it wasn't bad at all. It's kind of wierd to quit without really making my mind up to quit, I'm just doing it. $4 x 30 days = $120 per month I'll be saving. That's a lot of bread, man...a lot of bread.
-
And after a year, you've saved enough for that big screen HDTV. Good luck man, it's a terrible 'addiction.' More power to you.
-
hang on there! :aok
Continue this for 3 months and you get yourself a new iPhone 3G, 16gb (no BS)!
It's cheaper too!
Now only $299.00 + mods
-
Hmmm..big screen tv (I've already got a 42" plamsa) or a 3G iPhone...hmmmmm...
I have a feeling this economy is going to majorly tank within the next 2 years so I think I'll just put the money in the bank!
But more than likely I'll have to use it to feed C-HOG's appetite for 93 octane gas. Better her than me!

4 weeks using the Commit thingies. They seem to take the edge off, not a lot of drama so far. Good luck to both of us.
-
I tried the Commit lozenges once.
Couldn`t keep the damn things lit.

You know what? THAT is how i quit a few years back. Woke up a sunday after a party and didnt feel like going to the gas station to get more. Made it through the day with a hangover and sore throat from smoking too much the day before. On monday I figured that if i had made it one day, I could try one more. From there on I went a week without suffering too much. After that came about two weeks of pure hell. Made it through that period too, and after that it was fairly easy as i found out that the only craving i had left was mental, and not physical any more.
Take it one day at a time.
Good luck! You have no idea how nice it is to be a non smoker.... yet :)
-
BTW, I meant last, not lost.
It's odd, eh Nilsen? You don't plan on something happening and yet you do it anyway. Last time I quit it lasted a few months but anytime I went to a store or anywhere were smoking was allowed it KILLED me. The only time I do that now is twice a month when the wife and I go to the gaming establishments. But I think I'm going to stop doing that, too. I spend far more than I win. Hell, even more money straight back into my bank account. Seems I liked sinning more than I realised.
-
I never tried to quit before I did, but im not sure I would have made it if I had planned for it. Maybe the expectations and preassures would have been too much? I did not tell anyone that I had quit (except you lot here actually) before a month had passed. The missus noticed but didnt say anything. I told her the second week when i was abit snappy with her, but she said she knew...doh! . If i had made a big announcement I bet some of my friends would make a big deal about it just to be "funny" and blow smoke in my face or bring the subject up more often than normal :D. Want a smoke Nilsen? sure? come on...
-
So now that you ARE a non-smoker, how many did you use to smoke a day way back when you were one?
-
WTG Diablo!
I quit eons ago after a huge night on the piss, I even had smokes in the packet. I woke up the next afternoon feeling like the stuff on the bottom of a cocky's cage, took one look at the packet of smokes and thought...F**k that!
And I haven't smoked since.
-
I'm not going to lie, I really enjoyed smoking, more than I care to admit. But you have to understand that my mother was a heavy, heavy smoker all of her life which indirectly made me a smoker even before I was born. You could say I've been a smoker for over 41 years but have only picked up the habit 17 years ago. When I was a kid, believe it or not, I loved the smell of cigs as it reminded of my mom. She passed away last October from C.O.P.D. She smoked 3 packs a day for over 50 years, I've never gone over a pack a day unless I went out partying. It's funny how alcohol MAKES you want to light up, then I'd be going through a pack in no time. I am also getting sick of all the congestion and hacking I'm doing now, much more so now than I ever have. Writing on the wall, either read it or play stupid.
-
Come from a smoking family myslef. My mom died in 2005 from lung cancer, and Id really like to avoid that. Smokes are sweet for sure, but you can learn to enjoy alcohol without them. I would advice you to not do any partying for the next month or so though. You _will_ smoke if you get drunk. I did for the first year anyway whenever I got drunk.
The question you have to ask yourself now is.. Why would I want to start smoking?
-
There is no reason. Other than "smokes are sweet" there really isn't one.
-
There you go!
Starting to smoke at your age and with all the knowledge we have in 2008 is really daft. :)
-
In Texas, we'd say it was "queer" or "oklahoma-like" but never "daft". :)
-
Good for you. I think you really have to decide to quit on your own to be successful. Being badgered into it doesn't seem to work. After a week, you'll really start to feel the difference. If you don't exercise (vigorously) regularly, now would be a great time to start. Good luck!
-

Been 9 months since my last! I used the patch and it worked just fine!
I hope you beat the little addictive killers. YOU CAN DO IT!

Click.....puff puff. Well another one done in by over taxation by the supposed righteous wing. :( I applaud your decision but not the reasoning behind it as far a price goes. Do the research and see what the taxes on smokes is paying for. Now lets say everyone in america just stops and that money is now gone. What are they going after next? They have to replace that money because you know politicians ain't letting go of that type of cash! I'm thinking beer and hard liquor is next after smokes so i hope you all are cutting back now. Hmmm come to think of it a tax on any type of internet transaction might make a fortune?! :devil
I hope you succeed and i'll be trying to quit myself here shortly but not because of money/price, but because of cancer issues in my family. I'm switching to a pipe, then doing the patch deal, as that's how my 2 brothers quit. They smoked a pipe for 2 months, then patch/pipe for 1 month, then just the patch. 4th month nothing and they said they had little problem after that. Of course your appetite comes back so now they both need to lose weight. :)

good luck diablo!

As I stated earlier it wasn't only because of price, it was because I was too damn lazy to leave my house to get some more. Also, I stated my mother's lifetime habit that eventually caught up to her and led to her passing away last October. Thirdly, was because of money. My C-HOG likes her 93 octane and this is just one of a couple ways to help feed her need for top-shelf go-juice.
Over 48 hours into it and it feels remarkably normal. In other words, I have no over-whelming need to run 10 miles to the convenience store and buy me a pack. So far the amazing thing is I can smell things I couldn't before (damn cats!) and taste things more completely now. After only 2 days into it. I wonder what 2 weeks into it is going to be like. Thanks for the platitudes fellas, I won't let you down.

wtg on 48 :aok
Smell and taste are both things that will improve fast. In a few days you will actually find that alot of things around you stink so you will prolly wash all your clothing and your dwelling. I now think smokers stink and have to wash my clothes if i have been around smokers. How the missus could live with that smell for so long is beyond me.
Just be prepared that you might get a slap in the face soon. I found my first week pretty easy, but then it hit me. Just so you know that you might get the same and is prepared for it.
again.. WTG! you can do it :)

WTG Diablo :)

That is about how I quit Diablo.
Smoked my last cigarette in the pack one Friday morning, didn't feel like going to the store to get more. Still had some Nicorette gum laying around, started chewing that. Like your lozenges, it wasn't as bad as I remembered :). Made it about a week on the gum before I ran out, went to go by more. At that point it kind of hit me that I had quit smoking - now I just needed to break the nicotine habit. Started chewing regular gum instead after about 6 weeks or 2 months (don't really remember).
I quit just about three years ago... rarely want to smoke now (maybe one craving every few months).
Good luck. Remember, if you want to quit, it is easy to do it. And if you end up going back to it, you didn't want to quit anyway, so no harm done :).
-
Just over 72 hours now. I've only used one lozenge today and I am sort of feeling it, that deep within your chest aching. My food intake is about the same, maybe even a little less. Tonight my wife and I go to the annual Lunar Rendesvous cocktails & movie party where the key note speaker will be none other than Gene Kranz, Flight Director extrordinaire and longtime personal hero. It will be my first time consuming alcohol without smokes.
BTW-I just finished reading "Failure Is Not An Option", Gene Kranz's autobiography and I highly recommend it. Double irony, yes?

Want to say good luck, but luck has nothing to do with it :)

I just made it past the 3 month mark myself. I didn't use lozenges or gum or patches, I just did it cold turkey (and a lot of prayer). Keep up the good work, you've made it 2 days, you can also make it the rest of your life.

I have been smoke free since Feb 3 of 2007. I smoked for 14 years, not very long in some smokers lives, but long enough to know what it is like to quit.
My advice? Straws... Cut them in thirds. Chew them. Try to avoid social situations like bars or parties for at least 6 months. The first time back in a social situation is tough, be prepared to fight the urge, the first time I stepped foot inside a bar after I quit, I got really sick the day after, not because I drank too much... Well, maybe a little, but I really think the second hand smoke got to me.
Once you reach a year, the smell can still be antagonizing, but the urge to smoke was gone for me.

The trick to quitting is building up a reserve of happy memories while not smoking ( i.e., redefining yourself as a non-smoker but that sounds like psychobabble). I had at least 30 failed attempts. But they weren't a waste of time. During those failed attempts I made memories as a non-smoker. The last two failed attempts, I went back because of allergies. I would be quit for 6 months or so and all of a sudden I would develop terrible allergies. Last time this happened I went to a doctor and he got the allergies under control. That was 2 1/2 years ago and I haven't had a cigarette since. I don't miss it, I don't think about it, and don't ya know my allergies went away about 4 months ago. So now I'm a non smoker without allergies :)

That is great. Supposebly nicotine leaves the system in men after just 3 days and 4 days for women.

I was hoping HiTech would drop in and tell us how his efforts to quit went.
I recall he used Chantix, which is in the news for having more problematic side effects

So tonight I got to meet one of my hero's, Mr. Gene "Failure Is Not An Option" Kranz. This was a thrill that is indescribable. It was a surprise from my mother in law, she bought my wife and I tickets to the annual Lunar Rendezvous "movie night" and what did we get? One hour of Gene Kranz speaking of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions with special coverage of Apollo 13. It was so freaking incredible to sit there and hear it from him instead of watching "Apollo 13" again. Mr. Kranz has been a personal hero of mine for quite a while and this will be something I'll never, ever forget. I had a personal laugh when, in the middle of his speech, he explained that Mission Control at that time lived off of a diet of "black coffee, cigarettes, and prayer." A great man, one hell of an American.

Again, thanks for the words of encouragement. It's been over 96 hours now things are A-OK. Maintaining an even keel has been easier than I was expecting and no nicotine fits so far. It is about 98% mental as this one has been th easiest and all I've changed was my mental attitude. Thanks guys!

Social occassions....????
Sorry...I LOVE to play craps and go to the casinos 5-10 times a year. Everyone at the casinos smokes like chimneys--free drinks if you are a real player, and a who cares attitude. Worst place to go if you are a recent smokes quitter. Went to Vegas in February--armed with the patch. No problems. Thank goodness for the patch!
WTG on meeting Kranz!! What an American HERO!
Now be OUR HERO, Diablo and keep on track! We are all pulling for you! :aok
Forget tobacco. For every time you want a smoke go smooch on that cute girlfriend instead. Now THAT is a far better investment! :aok

out to get more.
Welcome to your smoke free life.

DiabloTX lost his smoke? Bummer. :lol

Yup. Lost it and didn't feel like finding it. Bummer, man.
-
I don't know how old you are (I'm 50) but smoking greatly increases your chance of a sudden heart attack. Thats the number one reason I quit.
I think 48 hours after you quit, your chance of a sudden heart attack is cut in half or something (I forget what it is, but I know its dramatic). That alone should keep you quit.

41 here. In one hour it will be 6 days since I had my last smoke. I don't know if being able to smell more of Houston is a good thing or not but I'll take it. There are parts of Houston I forgot smelled so bad. Then again it's nice to smell other things, too! And thanks for your input!

Thanks guys! Tonight at 11pm CST it will be one week. $4 x 7 = $28 weekly in savings. $28 x 52 = $1456 yearly in savings. $40 x 12 = $480 yearly savings by not going to the smoke filled gaming rooms anymore. $1936 total I'll save in one year between the two. Not to mention lighters, etc...That's a lot of dough for C-HOG!
