One of our economic indicators is the trucking industry. Since just about everything we use/buy is at one time or another on a truck here is a bad sign of how our economy is going.
In the first quarter of this year 930 trucking companies have gone out of business! All of these companies owned 50 trucks and employed 50 plus drivers, not to mention the support personnel! Just with the drivers that's 46,500 people out of work in the first 3 months of the year!
What's the reason given? High fuel prices and lack of freight from manufacturers due to customers/consumers not having the money to buy with due once again to the high fuel prices!
I'm one of these drivers that's been caught up in this deal and trying to find a new job is looking slim. :( I was a relief driver for Jevic Transportation and they folded up, closed the doors and we were left hanging. So if you think the economy is bad, it's getting worse and most of us don't see it improving anytime soon. :(

I work O/O for Celadon Canada for 7 years, same company, last week they fired here 50 O/Os with older trucks , but i'm not worried there's lots of demand for trucking services .
Where do you live? Celadon has terminals in Indianapolis,Laredo,Waxahacie(Dallas), Chicago,Greensboro,NC,Detroit,St.Louis,El Passo,Luisville,KY and here in canada in Windsor,Kitchener, toronto,Montreal.
Most loads are going north south, dryvan only, not too much west coast, (that's why i still work for them,i'm tired of transcanada hwy, mountains, snow and chains) cheap fuel, average weight 20-25000 lbs
Do you have a clean CDL? fill up the form below, i'm sure they'll hire you, If you want you can lease a truck from them also.

wow i always though your job was to fly IL2 over capped based...
Well at lease the company you work for is going good. I have to agree with the indicator.
I cant afford high end stuff so staying with basics and hoping it all blows over.

Think i already looked into celadon but they didn't have anything that really made me want to work for them. The biggest problem is i live 100 miles from chicago and with gas prices it kills me to drive up there.
13 years experience with only 1 ticket/accident. They both came from same incident. Been blown over by a tornado/super cell down burst while sitting at a stop sign, so i'm roll tested. ;) That's not a ride you want to take twice BTW.
I'm looking to move here shortly and hopefully get into a spotters job at a warehouse complex i'll be close to.

The majority of the reasons for trucking companies going out of business has little to do with diesel prices. It has to do with debt load, and brokers.
Many of these trucking companies that go under did so because of poor financial decisions that allowed them to be leveraged to the hilt. Combine that with brokers who are still scamming every penny they can, and you have a recipe for bankruptcy for those that could not afford a rise in costs and their rediculous truck payments.
The same goes for independents. Those that leveraged everything they had to get a truck, also wound up with a $1500 - $2500 a month payment. Some even used their homes as collateral. Not a good choice when you find out you can't make payments on one.
Again, it is a cause and effect issue that also reflects the financial status of many in this country. You leverage your arse to the hilt, and buy everything on credit, and sooner or later the Pieper will need to be paid. More so in a down trending economy like now.
Their are exceptions to everything, but they are definitely the rarity.
Hope you find a job Ric.

the REAL ECONOMIC INDICATOR
When the worlds #1 Industrial Superpower capitulates to liberal causes that provide for:
* No Drilling for Oil in Anwar or the Gulf Of Mexico...
* No Building of new Nuclear Power Stations...
* No Building of new Hydro Electric Dams...
* No Building of new Petroleum Refineries...
* No Building of new Coal Burning Facilities...
it's pretty much a given that it's the beginning of the end for said industrial superpower..........
Glad we could save the spotted owl...and destroy ourselves in the process...

ECONOMIC INDICATOR?
When I open the fridge and all that is in there is an echo.
The pantry has dead mice from starvation.
I go to feed the dog and he thinks I'm the meal.
Buzzards circle overhead.

back in Romania in last years Ceausescu , i had to wake up at 5AM and wait in line for a rationalized piece of bred and milk, In grocery store you could find only caned or bulk frozen fish:that buger feed us like penguins, meat was rationalized 1.5 lbs/person/month, 10-12 gallons of gasoline/month. First years after the revolution from "89 the unemployment was 35-40%, inflation over 100% year, but we survived.
However the economy goes, i don't think here in North America I'll ever see that kind of miserable life.

The economy is in very bad shape, and It will get much worse....there is not a bright spot in the future.
1) Your house is now depreciating..for many years It appreciated. slumping sales not many homes being built
many many people effected
2) Automotive Industry...Its in very bad shape...major layoffs with many more on the way.Factory's closing left and right.
car dealerships sell half of what they used too....major pay cuts to many managers...auto auctions
laying off many people to cut cost..think of all the small company's that are tied into automotive..they are in trouble!
3) Airline business...many layoffs cut backs!
4)Union companies...Union playing hard ball with these companies and these companies firing all employees and hiring new folks
for less money because they know times are tough, and many people are looking for jobs and will work for less.
These are just 4 examples out of many. Also you have... The price of gas.....banks tightening their belts.....stock market declining...
Record breaking bankruptcies...record breaking credit card debt...record breaking house forclosures...record breaking car repos....
Companies buying each other out and laying off many people....corupt politicians...corrupt CEOS....jails filled to capacity...wealfare system
being abused...health care cost out of this world.....Insurance cost out of this world....price of food keeps going up...peoples paychecks
going down....Have I forgot anything??
Enjoy life while you can folks because its going to get very ugly. Its right at our door steps!!

My business has doubled in the last year and looks like it will continue to grow. When I decided to go out on my own, I looked for an industry that was as recession proof as possible. If an average guy like me, well according to the lefties on this board I'm a moron, can flourish there is ample opportunity out there. Most people sit around and wait for someone else to take care of them. I saw the light 5 years ago and am always bewildered that others don't see it. That and that it took me so long to figure out the key to affluence and freedom, since it's so painfully simple.

Hey Rick-when I was younger, I started off running Vacuum trucks' in the local oilpatch, Then moved on to End-dumps hauling hazardous material up from LA, San Diego, and down out of the bay area. Having done that back from '94-'98. I watched what was happening to guys' then, when fuel started shooting up, without any change in freight rates. That's when I got back into construction...Anyway, I'd say look around. What will happen is that some of the larger companies that can weather the tough times' will pick up the routes. It might mean having to drive for someone like J.B. Hunt or Swift, but something will come up.

I'll make a quarter of a million this year. Last year I only made a smidge over 100k. For me, that's success. For others, not so much I suppose.
I'm the one calling the shots though, and that peace of mind is worth tons.

Thanks, I am not happy the economy is bad and people are losing their jobs. My point is that there is plenty of opportunities out there for those who don't need someone(read employer) to take care of them; people that are willing to go get it themselves.

Hmmm...I'd ask you what you're into, Steve, but leaking the word about something that is successful right now might create a rush of competition. I'll just assume you used some great business sense, and found a niche of the economy that is a steady money-maker.
