Shaun Lunt, an anesthesiologist from Loma Linda was killed in his super Cub Friday in a stall/spin accident in Quinhagak, Alaska. His friend and instructor, Loni Habersetzer, observed the crash from his own cub while they were circling a whale skeleton.
Dr Lunt was a remarkable bush pilot, and his photos of remote Alaska are phenomenal. You can see them at shaunlunt.typepad.com That is truly tragic. I've enjoyed Shaun's photography, and vicariously traveled with him in Alaska. How unforgiving our sport.
Shaun was my good friend. He lived life with passion. He will be deeply missed. :( There was a poem posted at on the SuperCub forums that fits Shaun well.
IMPRESSIONS OF A PILOT
Flight is freedom in its purest form,
To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;
To roll and glide, to wheel and spin,
To feel the joy that swells within;
To leave the earth with its troubles and fly,
And know the warmth of a clear spring sky;
Then back to earth at the end of a day,
Released from the tensions which melted away.
Should my end come while I am in flight,
Whether brightest day or darkest night;
Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain,
Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again;
For each of us is created to die,
And within me I know,
I was born to fly.

Wow...I am sorry for your loss and thoughts & prayers for his family & friends.
There was a History Channel show not long ago about Alaskan Bush Pilots and what a dangerous occupation it was at any time of year. :salute

I'm sorry about the loss of your friend, Wolfala. By looking at the pics he took and captions he wrote, I have the impression that the poem indeed fits him perefectly. He died doing what he loved in the place he loved...
