Torn Achilles
Well I’ve gone and torn my Achilles. Playing hoop with guys half my age. I reached out for a loose ball and pushed off on my foot and heard a pop.
Has anyone done this and did you have surgery to repair it? If so how long was the rehab/down time? And how well did you recover?
thanks, in much pain JBA

You'll be recovering for up to 6 months. Talk to your doctor very thoroughly about the options. You may not need surgery, but I'd kind of expect it.
-
Are you sure its torn and not hyper-extended? If its torn, you will not be able to even put your toe on the ground without excruciating pain.
Sorry to hear about your Achille's, JBA. Hope you heal fast.
-
Ohh no! Partial or complete?
You were much better off just shattering a leg bone.... young men take up to a year to fully heal. As far as athletic injuries go, only blowing out a knee is worse.

It always sux when Father Time reaches out and touches you...
Heal quickly JBA.

Been there done that. Ruptured my Achilles three years years ago. I had repair surgery 7 days after I ruptured it. Had to go to 3 months of physical therapy about a month and a half after surgery. I was walking without crutches in about 4 months, but didn't feel "normal" for a full year. Even now I feel I have lost alot of "spring" and strength from that leg. Got a nice scar up the back of my ankle.
I did it playing basketball also. Went for a layup and *pop*. I was for sure someone had kicked me in the back of the leg, but I was all alone. There was *definitely* some pain associated with the rupture....

LOL thanks,
Had the MRI this morning, will meet with Ortho surgeon tomorrow morning, I'm tentatively scheduled for surgery next Friday. The real B itch of it all is I fractured my thumb last August play soccer with my kids, and had surgery to reattach the ligament. I still have not recovered fully from that.
First time I have ever had a cast and, I get two with in a year, at age 41.

JBA :salute :salute sir!
The wife is an RN in surgery with a big ortho/gastro/neuro background, so I asked her.
Your achillies tendon is THE major tendon connecting your lower leg muscle to your foot.
She says that it will take a good 6 to 12 weeks for full movement and recovery (depending on the tear). First, the doc's have them on a restricted physical therapy, usually a cast and crutches. Then graduating to a cane and restrictive "boot". There is quite a bit of physical therapy involved. By 12 weeks you should be walking without pain.
She also says to ask your own doc (depending on the tear) what his opinion is on how long it should be before you can start physical therapy...in other words, how long for your own individual situation (what did the MRI indicate) before it heals enough to start getting movement back without risking un-doing what the surgery fixed.
This is from me: especially the first week of and after surgery, don't be Mr. Tough Guy. If they offer a prescription for pain medication, TAKE IT.
My thoughts & prayers are with you, and I wish you an easy surgery & post-op!

I have a buddy who did the same thing.
He came to work the next day and said he thought he tore something, and then asked me what I thought as the flopped his foot around. He said that he had worse pain from a sprain, and the biggest problem he had was his foot flopping around as he walked. I told him I would think he would be in excruciating pain if it were torn, so it probably was not, as he just had a dull ache, but go see a doctor if he was concerned enough to ask me about it, as engineers don't give out the best medical advice.
He went to see the doctor and sure enough his achillies was completely torn and he had to have the tendon reattached, go through the cast, therapy, etc.
I still amazed he did not feel much pain.

My father ripped his and had to wear a funky boot for a few weeks. It looked like something from the KISS wardrobe department :)
-
Step-brother had it happen. Took him about 14 months to be able to jog on it, he still has yet to full out run, that was 3 years ago.
His was a full out tear though at work. Printing company, a 3000lbs roll fell on the back of the leg and tore / snapped the whole thing.
-
Yikes, I hope the surgery goes well and you heal up with no problems. Sounds like a nasty situation there. :O

I saw it happen to a team mate of mine in college about 20 minutes before I tore my ACL at football practice one day. Then while they were running sprints another guy tore his PCL trying to stop and he slid across the astroturf.
That was the last time the team practiced on turf for the season. The guys with the Achilles had his surgery the same day I had my ACL rebuild done about two months later. He was out of football for a full year.

MRI confirms an Achilles rupture about 4 inches above the heel. Friday morning surgery to bundle it all back together, then 8 weeks of casts and boots. Then the long road of rehab.
Thanks for the well wishes.
