Title: Typhoon "RAD" shutter air brake feature?
Post by: BillyD on June 11, 2008, 03:28:46 PM
Possibly a new feature for the Typhoon mk IB? Seems that pilots had a radiator vent they would use effectively as an air brake....assign it to shift C?

From combat report of Norman Lucas RAF 266 Squadron (operation Rodeo 78, 9th of Feb, 1944)

"when about 1500yds behind e/a i recognised it as a Do.24 flying boat, so I put my rad shutter down and throttled right back. I opened fire with a 3 second burst from 500yds and closing to 200 from dead astern and slightly below. I saw strikes all over e/a with both outer engines on fire........"

I think the throttling back is what acts like an air brake, and that's already modelled.

Well, it MAY be that, might not be that. Itw would be cool to add that in as a feature.  :aok

Great idea, so when you forgot you shut it the engine overheats?

what would happen if the engine over heats though? It wont be like WEP when you do that, could they function in some engine damage to go along with it?  :aok

Well, what normally happens when an engine overheats, brainiac?

Used as an airbrake. :salute

Leaving it open would produce excessive cooling, and of course, extra drag.

Yeah excessive cooling would be awesome considering how many times the LTARs ping my tiffie's radiator with there danged weeble wobbles! :D

"Excessive cooling" works best when you still have water in your radiator. :D

If the thing causes over cooling wouldn't that be able to turn of the fire, or at least stall the fire a bit?

Only on Pluto ;)
Seriously though, the engine, just like your car engine, has an optimum operating temperature. Running below that optimum temperature would give degraded performance.
