I took a Ki-61 for a spin last night. I hadn't flown it in a while.
When I first flew it I sort of liked it but then I ran into a tough stretch in it and backed away. Last night I think I really started to understand it. Flown within it's envelope it's really a sweet plane. Highly manouverable, good speed, good guns.
Also, I had always sort of put the Ki-61 and the C.205 in the same boat so I took a 205 up afterward for comparison. Gotta say the Ki-61 is the better of the two by a wide margin IMO. Maybe it just fits my style better.

We Brits flew the F4u off carriers out of the box. :aok

C205 has better weaponry, better ammo load, better climb rate, better top speed, better acceleration and raw horsepower, and still turns pretty damn nice.
Even in turn radius, they aren't too far off. The Ki61 turns almost like a hurr/spit, though, so it's not a fair comparison. The C.205 turns as well as most of the planeset (not counting the spits/hurrs/top 1% planes.
The only real weakness, IMO, is the strength of the 20mm guns on the 205, and the much shorter range.

oops wrong thread! :uhoh

Has a great dive capability, unlike any other Japanese aircraft in every way.

N1k2 dives just fine, as does the D3A and B5N ;)

The Tony is a crappy plane.

That may all be true but the Ki just seems better to me. Much smoother to fly.
Unlike most of the plane-set, I rarely felt the urge to engage WEP.
It's turn response is fast and smooth particularily around 250 mph (seems to be a sweet spot). I was surprised that it seems to do a wing-over reverse even better than the F6F and I was really surpised in it's agility while fighting an FM2.
I better shut up now. I HATE running into these things in the arena.

Ah, so another pilot likes the Hien as well, eh?
It's a very fun aircraft to fly, and it's so deceptively deadly in the right hands. Plus, it's got ridiculous range, and more than enough ammo for several kills per sortie.

C205 has better weaponry
61 has cowl 20mms, the 205 does not

I always thought the TONY was the best Japanese plane of the pack till the FRANK came along.
I first started sim-flying in the ME-109 so I guess that is why I liked it so well when I joined a Japanese based squad - it's flying characteristics are very similar. I never could do anything with the ZEKE's and the GEORGE always handled like a pregnant cow on ice to me.

The 61 seems to be a better handling plane over the 205 to me. While the cannons on the 205 are lethal I can't get past the 109ish stall that seems to occur everytime I bank the 205 in either directon. I contrast the 61, while sounding like a lawnmower, is much smoother in the controls. Also, the 61 seems to be much better in the "run down the runstang" department.

Go out and find one of the "Sound Packages" that are available and change your "Engine Sounds."
I did this with my P-38 - thought the original engines sounded too much like an Electic hedge trimmer so I found one that has the high pitched whine of the twin Allison's and now it will about make the fillings in your teeth vibrate while flying! :rock

my primary ride is the a6m5 zero. the niki is ok gun wise but sucks turning. the ki61 is better but you have to have alt and speed to get the most out of the plane. the gun set up is excellant when somone tries to HO you. you win most of the time. i compare this plane to be an equal to the p51b. its not as fast but it flies similar.

Are you on crack? The guns on the N1K-2 are outstanding, and its turn rate is fantastic. The only things really bad about it are speed and climb rate.

The N1K-2 has Type 99-2 cannons. Ballistically they are comparable to the German MG151/20, the standard gun on most designs. It fires a slightly heavier round at a bit higher speed. The gun suffers a bit from firing at a very slow ROF of 8 rounds per second, MG 151 has 12 and the Ho-5 (Ki-84 & Ki 61) 14.
But it'S climbrate is far from being bad. Not many planes in Ah2 are capable of achieving a constant climbrate of more than 4000 fpm (sealevel up to 5k) (for comparison: Ki-61 just over 3000 fpm, Spit XVI about 4600 fpm). In a dogfighting situation you may notice N1k's hanging on their props like no one else.
The N1k doesn't climb bad, it rolls badly... that's it's biggest weakness in my opinion.

Except the P-38 which is probably the best vertical fighter in the game with the Ki-84 being a close second.

Get me in the LWA's 1 on 1 vs a Niki. 8 times out of 10, the Niki is going down.
-
the niki is only used for hoing pilots cause the cant turn with a spit, zero, or hurricane. plus your problem is multiplied if the pilot is skilled. as for the ki61. the location of the guns on this ride helps big time in a head on turn fight. you get your sight on the opponent quicker for the kill.
-
The niki is a great bird, but in my opinion it is an "easy mode" plane. Full flaps it will outturn all F4Us and the F6F. It has amazing cannons and GREAT climb. It also keeps its E very well.

Not many planes out turn the spit zero and hurricane... the Niki turns pretty good.

The Tony keeps E better.

Please stop posting about planes. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Yeah, but that is due to the pilot, not the plane. :aok

Well hey, all posts point the Tony being "inferior". :noid

It's never been a problem for me, though I'm constantly annoyed at how its guns seem to be able to get easy kills from 800+ out.

Best vertical fighter, or best at hanging on it's prop? Stall model is quite something and too easy to take advantage of imho. Add nose hispanos for extra dweebery and yes it's the best at vertical.
Ki-84 is a bit of a monster along with the dweeb16 & dweeb8, luckily like most top tier rides flown with a lack of energy management and ACM relying on engine power and WEP to get them out of trouble.

Totally agree, C205 is awesome if you can maintain it's energy at the optimum speed. Seen a couple of dedicated C205 sticks do well in the C205 and it's great to watch.

Yes it was good in reality but not to the level in here. Bit like the F4U and it's amazing zeke like performance with flaps. Yes they had good flaps but not to the degree used in game. Like dropping landing gear and retracting in two secs flat or cutting the engine, gamey tactics .. All the flight models are good though basic overall.

It is in comparison because the japanese kinda got the idea from the Italians.
Correct me if i'm wrong. :aok
Tony FTW!
