Title: ammo distribution in bombers
Post by: iculus on March 11, 2001, 08:02:00 PM
It would be nice if there was a way to move defensive ammunition from turrets with a lot of ammo to the one that is out of ammo.  (i.e. take some from the nose for the tail.)

Just a thought, flame away!

Not a bad suggestion but... You can't even reload the guns on a PT boat. The real boats had more than one magazine load per weapon but not in AH.

yup, this would be esp. good if you had a couple damaged guns.  Transfer the ammo from the non functional guns to the ones that do,, and fight on brave one!

S!

AFAIK the transfer of ammo between guns for example in a B17 was not easily done if at all.The ammoboxes didn't just lie around the floor and belts coming freely out of them to the guns, but they were installed on racks and the ammunition was fed from the boxes via a delivery mechanism(don't remember the correct word) straigth to the guns. This especially on powered turrets and also if I recall right on waist/cheek guns too in the B17.

If you were thinking about getting more ammo to the tail gun on the Lanny you can't.  The tail gun is a different caliber than the nose and top turrent.

I think this is a good idea.  And I ahd no idea that a Lanc had a different pea shooter in the back......what is the difference betweeen them?

Nose and top turrets are twin .30 cal while the aft gun is a twin .50 cal.

Transfering ammo would work in planes like the Ju-88 that used simple drum magazines in the guns. However if you're going to model the ammo transfer you should also model the delay in changing to the next magazine...

Possibly not a good idea. As it is Ju-88s don't geften get to live long enough during an attack to worry about ammo =(

I remember the copilot in Mephis Belle going to the tail "to bring some ammo".  Of course, that film was completely accurate (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif)...it did turn me into a B-17 lover though. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Not sure if this ammo transfer thing happened in real life.
