Title: Acronis Image back up
Post by: Getback on June 15, 2008, 07:03:04 PM
I backed up my computer, except for the OS, using Acronis. MrRipley had suggested that I should back it up. So I undid a restore and backed up my computer. Then I did a restore again to an earlier period. The last restore caused all kinds of issues. I made some errors too. Let's just say I'm a maroon. Anyway after much thought and guesses I managed to get Windows XP loaded and a few drivers. Here's my question. If I use the acronis backup can I pick and choose what I want to install? Sure would appreciate some insight on that.

Thanks in advance.

I've never used Acronis, but I can tell you I turned off system restore years ago.

Man! I have had this happen 2x with system restore. Never again!! From now on it is Acronis backup only.

While I'm at it let me say I will think long and hard about using a SB sound card again. They are just too intrusive from what I can tell.

Dude ! You have GOT to stop messing with your computer !!! You seem to mess it up more everytime ! :devil

I'd start fresh, then make the "back-up". Not sure what you did to trash it this time, but if there is even the slightest chance to back-up you already made might trash it again, I wouldn't use it.

Remember, if it ain't broke, STOP trying to fix it !

Trust me fugitive, I am so very very sorry. The only reason I loaded the SB card was to use my sidewinder stick. If I knew then what I know now I would have waited for the ch stuff. Until the SB card it was running fantastic. Well actually until I deleted the SB card. The drivers and other SB programs seemed to slow the computer down tremendously.

It's back up and running BTW. I'm just waiting for an answer on the acronis backup. I may visit their website.

I've used Acronis 9 and 11 and both have worked well for me. That said, I have heard of people having problems restoring backups made with version 9.

You can't pick and choose which applications you restore.

I agree to a large extent. However, the lessons somebody learns trying to recover from their own mistakes tend to stick with you better than just reading about it. I know. I used to do the same kinds of things a long time ago. I didn't have the luxury of internet forums to help me recover either!

First rule of thumb: Take the image from a system state that you know is in 100% working order i.e. fresh after full OS install (drivers, DX, the works).

No use backing up images that are broken one way or the other.

Just finished loading everything last night. Figure it's a good time for a total image back up.

Acronis is great in the fact that it will restore a fully functional OS thats already activated. Anytime I build out a machine I make a "clean" image once I have the OS and all updated drivers etc. Then I'll load up all my core apps and make a 2nd image. Then I'll start a backup program from there. That way I have both the clean OS and initial configuation "locked away". All my mission critical data is on a seperate data drive. Push comes to shove I can have a "rebuilt machine" with all my key programs and data up and running in an hour or so...
