I feel that hardly anyone wants to play these types of scenarios? Everyone is hording in the Main Arenas.... I find it hard to believe that only a handful of players like the realistic scenarios. Why aren't there more people on Axis vs Allies? I have wondered this for years!
-
mostly because everyone has their own idea of what realistic is. you can't please everyone. based on that, that is the reason why there arent more people in there. that and some of the tactics that arent liked by all groups or squads. in my humble opinion :)
-
Numbers man, most will flock to the arena with biggest numbers. Also some times the AVA doesn't have the plane selection we do now. I love flying the F4U and F6F but some times those plane aren't available, that some times is a reason for people not coming in.
I like the realistic match ups we get in here, even if we have an LA-7 flying next to a spit16 and F4U at least their on the same side.

Through the course of time, squads (and singles) that enjoy mission based play and squad sized opps that mean something than kill score will be attracted to this. Simply because its something more than MA play. Which isnt bad , mind you, just different. Those that want more can now find it, imho.
-
Nufbers though do matter a lot. I am a recent flyer in the aVa. I've been a casual player in Aces High for about a year now. When I pop on I want to go to where people are doing things.
If I only have an hour to play I don't want to spend 45 minutes looking for a fight. After I get shot down in 30 seconds, I no longer have time to spend another 30 minutes looking for another fight.
I think that's the main reason you don't see casual players in the AvA. There are not enough people on most of the time. They also don't generally know what's going on in the "War". If a casual players jumped into the AvA arena right now, having not gone through the forums they wouldn't know what to do.
They'd bounce around fields for a bit realizing that they can't find a plane to fly. After a few minutes they'll give up and go back to the MA, or the DA, where it's easy to find a fight.

Spawned in as German, spent about 10-15 minutes looking looking for any action at all. Finally saw two bandits break the radar at an airfield with no aircraft, launched from another airfield to engage, bandits died to AAA before I could get there. Augered and went to Blue.
-
Good point damionte. The log-in message in the AvA could go a lot further at displaying helpful information for newcomers. That said, I hardly play in the AvA because there are zero people there almost every time I fly.
-
When you get tired of flying around for 30 minutes without even seeing anyone, come to the mid war where most of the AvA has already gone.
-
I fail to see the need for large numbers to be equated with good play. some of the very best fights I have ever had were in the AvA with another like minded player, just two of us on. the absolute very best small fights I have ever been in have been between 8-12 players. of course that is now a thing of the past, the war has completely taken the fight out of the AvA.

Hiya Mak.
What timezone are you in? Best numbers in the Arena are 8:00 PM to midnight, EST. Plenty of good fights and strategic and tactical game play. Here is just a sampling of some units enemy kill tallies over the past 48 hrs, for action related basis comparison only. It’s interesting to note also, that being as the vast majority of this action comes in the above compressed time period of Prime Time EST, this window finds lots of good game play, for those looking for it.
Avengers 40 Kills
353rd FG 51 Kills
367th 15 Kills
JG11 101 Kills
JG54 49 Kills
Salute, hope to see you up. The equation is simple. The more people who play, the more people will play.

Last night at 11:30 Pm there where 51 people on.
More than I have ever seen .
We had a great time.
I was shot down and enjoyed it . Go figure.
The cloud cover and wind variables that have been introduced are also a plus.
It make you really have to work to find your enemy but that is exactly what had to be done in a normal real life scenario
HAts off and a :salute to the Staff and Veterans who worked the DAR -DOt thing out

:salute Trukk,
Heya bud. Attendance has always suffered in the AvA since the arrival of the spit MA arenas. Mostly, due to the experience of casual players that you described above.
One way to really catch on to how much fun it can be is to bring the 78th in on an announced operation. I love flying with you guys and certainly would be a worthwhile challenge to fly against you.
I would suggest scheduling it for the opening day(s) of a round in current setup mode. Those targets hit will not be tallied for points so it will be more of a friendly engagement.
I hope to see you soon to bring some of that FSO flavor to this arena as well.
-
I guess that's the point I was trying to make. The arena needs to be attractive for the casual players, and the experience I had is too common. There were guys in the arena, I just couldn't find them. The AvA needs to attract the casual players in order to turn them into AvA fans, but the current setup doesn't do that. It needs bardar.
Edit: We escorted the buffs on Sunday and had fun in that organized event, but that's only a couple of hours a day, it's the rest of the day (and the customer base it serves) that is the problem.

I was in for a bit tonight. trying to get on more often to give you boys an easy kill
-
Dont be coming into my territory trying to horde all the deaths dang it!! thats my speciality :D

Realistic scenarios:
Fly for 3 hours. Get jumped by 10 guys you never saw. Die or run home.
There is nothing realistic about this game.
-
If you are looking for a factual simulation I'd say that scenario is very accurate, Most any of the WW II fighters aces I ever heard interviewed said most kills came from killing someone from behind that never saw it coming.
If your talking about actual, that was actual

Bull, you are right :aok
Trukk,
I think the MOTD needs to have more information to alert casual players of what to expect. As with any battle setup, you don't want to be announcing too many of your plans on open channel. The fear of spying, excludes the guys that are new and not tuned to any specific channel other than country channel.
In a perfect world where we didn't have to deal with that crap, the casual player would be suited up immediately and put to work on tasks at hand. Wouldn't it be great to just go to the Officer's Club and get the latest orders from your commander without anyone else being online?
Since, the AvA staff have made a concerted effort to change setups, the numbers and squads have grown exponentially. :rock
So, I don't have nearly as many problems with these types of setups as I do with an empty Arena. This is by far the best thing HTC currently has to offer in a 24 hour arena imho.

That is one of the BEST software enhancements i have read about on this game forum
That would allow squads and individuals to go directly to there work
WOW

When more folks try it out and find the new pilots flying in this arena I think they will be back for more.
My story behind this is easy...
a squaddie and myself were making simple jabo runs last night, he tangled with a 109 for about 5 minutes in one of the best fights he had been in awhile (his comments). I was in the area, low on fuel and starting to RTB which took me back over his fight area. He was shot down shortly afterwards, so I thought I would drop some altitude and make a few harassing passes over my squaddies foe. Found the 109 shortly afterwards, BnZ'd a couple of times (no real shots lined up but like a said just harassing him/her) and started to RTB again. Along came a 2ND 109 who dove in on me HOT. This 2ND 109 and I flipped, twisted and turned with each other a few times. He hit my oil on a nice front quarter shot and on the next pass I returned the favor with a radiator hit on him. The 2ND 109 disengaged, I followed briefly to be sure then turned tail, dropped the nose and got outta there hoping the 1st 109 had left the area but did not have the fuel (and now oil) to wait and see. In the next minute or so, I checked my 6 to see if I was still clear but instead found a mean looking K4 not 400' behind me. No gun flashes from him, he was just stuck on me back there. I turned a Lil bit to see if he would take a shot. Nothing. Next thing I know, the K4 is 200' from me at the 5 o'clock postion. I waggle my wings, he does the same. He followed me until I was about 2 miles from base. During 2-3 minutes that followed, I had ANOTHER 109 (now the 3rd 109) come in hot, but he did not engage (even though he had a perfect shot on me). My only guess was that my new found axis wingman had asked the 3rd 109 not to engage me.
I sent a salute out over 200 to the 109 over V44.
Jappa52 returned it. :salute
I have to say. In the last year of playing this game, I have not personally been the recipient of such respectful flying. Keep these type of behaviors in this arena and people will flock to it. At least those looking for good honest fights and not the easy kills.
:salute Jappa

I'll be back in for more fun.

Yes Jappa is quite a stick, combining skill with class.
He's amazing to fiight against.

This is impossible to do as long as there are people switching sides. Somehow the arena and choice of side has to be locked, if anything like that is to be put into the game.

:salute Wow, thank you for the kind words guys.
:salute 68raptor, that night we had one hell of a brawl. I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as I did and I look forward to the next one.
I’m a newcomer to the ava and so far my experience has beaten anything the mains have to offer hands down. Experienced sticks, great fights (NEVER had fights like this in the MA) and class acts… Thank you for the work it took to get this going.
