Hey, ya'all. My debut album, "Home, God, and Country", is now out and available for purchase and download at www.cdbaby.com/cd/richowen . You can listen to 2 minutes of each song at the link. You can also listen to six of the songs from the album in the entirety at www.myspace.com/richowen61, download the song "What of Them" for free, and purchase downloads of other individual songs.
"Home, God, and Country" won the Colorado Country Music Association's Album of the Year, Modern Country" for 2008. Two of the songs on the album won CCMA first place awards in their categories: "The Man They Need Me To Be" for Modern Country Songwriting, and "We're the Ones" for best Patriotic Song.
Give the a listen, and buy the album if you like what you hear. Thanks.

Gosh, Sudz, I can't imagine why not  . Your album sounds like a sure-fire hit to me ;). And thanks.

Congrats Sabre! Got your email too yesterday. Won't be long before you'll be forced to retire from real work in order to keep up with your tours. :)

I wish! Not quitting my day job just yet, though. I enjoy eating too much. However, you never know...

Hmm... Ironically, I'm starting to get my band together in Austin. Which is awesome cuz I'm 20 miles away from the Music Capitol of the World. Hopefully, I can get my things kicked off there.
-
"Music Capitol of the World"? Nashville or Detroit? I thought Austin was in Texas.
:lol
Congrats Sabre I'll check them out too.

That's what it's known as around here. Every place you go there has a band playing. Not just bars either. Last time I was there, they were setting up for some big warped tour concert, with some kid band from Austin opening for it infront of like 2000 people. Easy way to get a start.
-
Thanks, guys. First batch at CD Baby's nearly gone, so I'm sending some more to them tomorrow. :rock

Austin isn't the music capital of the world, it's the live music capital of the world.
Sounds like a nice album sabre, good luck with it!
-
good job Sabre. :)
sounds real good.
RichOwenMusic would be a good name for a record label. ;)
-
Wow Rich!
I'm going to get this in now: "I knew your when"... (you had glasses, a buzzcut, wore a USAF uniform and were more of a geek than a redneck :) )
I'm a pretty far stretch from being a country music fan, but I did listen to the six songs on your myspace page... That sounds like "real" country music; I don't know how you do it man.
Way to go

Thanks again, guys. And thank you, too, Eskimo. Yeah, you give a pretty good description of me back when we were in the Buccaneers together. Amazing what retiring from the Air Force can do, eh? :salute Writing music was certainly the last thing I figured I'd wind up doing as a hobby (let along making any money at ). Anyway, I appreciate the support, and if you like what you hear, please purchase the CD or the album download. Now if I can just get Sean Hannity to play "What of Them" or "We're the Ones" on air, I'd be set :pray :pray :pray. And yes, I sent him a copy :D.
-
Good for you Sabre. Hope all goes well.

Sabre........ congrats ... I really enjoyed listening to it. Best of luck with it.
If I could offer two things that stuck out as I was listening:
1. "The Man They Need Me To Be" .. the guitar needs to be potted down...it's far too dominant, and takes away from the vocals and melody.
2. "Don't Give Up On Me" BEST song of the bunch...has a lot of commercial appeal ...but it's SCREAMING for a fiddle/violin solo...
-
Wow Saber,
Sounds good almost makes me want to move back to Oklahoma!
Cheers

I am far from a country music fan, but with 25 years in radio I DO understand how difficult it can be to even get into a studio, much less have something properly mixed and ready for the biz! :aok
Good luck sir and I hope someday you stand on the stage at the CMA and take home a nice trophy.
Just remember--without fans, there are no stars.

Good ear, ZetaNine. Thanks for the feedback. Regarding "Don't Give Up On Me", it's my favorite, too. I wrote it for my son when he graduated high school (he's autistic). It has cello and strings in the background, though no solo. I let the guitar pretty much carry the song, with only very light accompanyment (a "less is more" strategy in this case). I would have liked to include a musical bridge for the violin (love the sound of it), but it was already 5 minutes long (and this is the short version). In fact, the length is the main reason it will have trouble getting air-time on terrestrial radio. It has been played numerous times on internet radio, at the following links...
Hooah!!!! Radio at www.hooahradio.com
and
America's Freedom Broadcast Radio at www.afbradio.us
ROX, thanks. Yeah, I hope never to forget that the fans are what it's about.

I completely understand your hesitancy to chop it up.....as most labels would have you do. nevertheless......it truly is a great song...and the fact that it's dedicated to your son only makes it that much better. keep pumping out the tunes and let the creativity flow.....before anything...your music has to satisfy YOU.

sly and the family stone respectfully disagree. ;)

your 1st batch is gone.
ordered 3, one for house, one for car, one for backup.
said they didn't have enough on hand to fill the order and put it on back order.
oh well guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer.
was just going to get 2, but that is a good price.
-
WTG Sabre!!
There will come a day when I watch the CMA and say I use to shoot that guy down..Now look at him.
Hope it all works out for you.

Yeah, I was notified of the back order and they'll have more in a couple days. Thanks very much for your support, and I'm very glad you like what you hear, DieAz.
Getback, I hope you can say that some day, too. :)

Where were you when they built the Ladder to Heaven?
-
Sabre,
Do you have any stats on your sales? Where your customers are buying from? Is there a ranking, top 1,000 country or something? I don't even know what gold, platinum, silver mean as far as numbers. Do they have brass, copper and nickel for newbies? Does CD baby have exclusive rights to your sales?

I give him six months and he’ll be stage diving, trashing hotel rooms, biting the heads off of bats, being chased everywhere by teenage groupies and paparazzi, crash his Ferrari and his Porsche and his F-650 pick-up and his horse, spew cow blood on the audience at all of his concerts…

Naw, that was last week. I'm gonna do some reeeeaaallllyyyyyy crasy stuff six months from now...got it all planned out.
Seriously, I actually get a report on sales from CD Baby. And no, they don't have an exclusive marketing deal, though they ask artists to be sensible. For instance, don't offer it for direct sale at a lower price. CD Baby has arrangements with iTunes and other digital music sellers for them to also carry my music, and it only makes sense not to undercut them. For instance, the local Barnes & Nobles carries my CD, but at the same price it lists for on CD Baby.
-
Do you have an agent? Are you physically shipping the cases to CD baby yourself? Who did the album cover? Did you record in a professional studio or in a home studio?

No, yes, me, professional. :)
Seriously, I do not have an agent, though I've been in discussions with a music promoter. The CDs were replicated by a company who sent the first pressing to me. I then ship them to CD baby as demand requires. They ask that you only send as many CDs as you sold in the last three months, so they don't have to warehouse too much inventory. Remember that CD Baby is an outlet for indie artists, who don't move the volume of the major label artists. I did all the CD artwork myself, and you can see it all at my myspace site, in the "Home, God, and Country" photo album under my "pics". The cover art was almost as much fun as recording...and not as much work ;). All the recording was done in professional studios, using professional musicians. As an example, Joe Diffy's lead guitarist plays on sever of the tracks. Interestingly, the vocals were all recorded here in Colorado, and the background tracks in Smyrna, TN, just outside Nashville. Internet's a wonderful thing!

Sabre........agents are for getting gigs. secure the services of a good personal manager with good industry contacts... so both of you can concentrate on your music....later.. both of you can secure an agent or agents.
agents have no deep interest in what's best for you and your career..whereas a personal manager does.
-
Thanks, ZetaNine, for the advice. Had no immediate plans for an agent. I have been talking with a music promoter though, to try to get more exposure. I hadn't really considered a personal manager, and am not sure what they do for an artist. I'd be interested in hearing more about them and the service the provide. Thanks.
-
basically like any other manager, they put you to work.
usually the more you make, the more they make.
that is if they are paid percentage wise.

here is a link to one of the more famous or some would say infamous Personal Manager.

Might not be a whole lot but if you have a press kit send it to my best friend here in Houston. He's the co-owner of Big Texas Saloons here in Houston and they have live acts every night or near every night. His name is John, you'll see his email in the contacts part of the website. Tell him Kyle sent you, he'll understand.

I hadn't really considered a personal manager, and am not sure what they do for an artist.
basically it's a marriage without sex. a personal manager guides every aspect of your career, and works in your best interest at all times, under your direction. everybody in the industry deals with him/her...from accountants to agents to publicists to record executives...etc... he's your business conduit. he has a fiduciary responsibility regarding your income and assets, and usually has the exclusive ability to execute agreements on your behalf. He gives career path advice, locates & contracts with industry professionals who will help your career, and works with the agents. they typically earn 15% of your gross income...and typically won't touch a client unless they are already grossing 1M in revenue already....but in country music especially there are instances when they Will work with clients right out of the gate if they believe in their talent.
