Title: Do you check the good till date on cans?
Post by: wrongwayric on June 18, 2008, 07:12:28 PM
Yep most of us probably don't, just open it up and if it smells good, just dump it in and eat it right? :pray

I buy cases of chunky and campbells soup when they are on sale and i'm running low. Usually i'll pull the old stock to the front and put the new stuff in the back. Somehow 1 can of chicken noodle managed to get overlooked for about a year past the still good date. I ate it last night. :O

There are 2 ways your body voids things that are bad for you and about 2 hours after eating i was using both of them. :cry

So check that date before you scarf it down.

I've cut my intake of Sodium drastically this year.   I'm still losing weight.    :rock

Bottled water as expiration dates, too.  Check those as well.

And congrats Masher!

:lol I lost some weight also. I'm sure there's nothing left in my intestines or fecal matter in my bowels. :lol Food poisoning suxs big time. :( Think this is the 5th time i've had it, but only the first i gave it to myself. When i got it in the Phillipines i spent 2 days in the hospital with I.V.'s in me to replace the fluids i was spewing out. I'd rather have the flu than a case like that again. :(

I been drinking water all day long as i'm sure i was dehydrated pretty bad. Lasted about 6 hours before i felt like i could stand and leave the close proximity of the bathroom.

If you have food poisoning water doesn't help.   You've already crapped out the lining of your colon.    Drink G2 for a day or two.   Back to normal.    Water will just "go through" you.

Most bouts of diarrhea are actually instances of "minor food poisoning".

I check the date on everything. Besides, with three boys, we don't keep food in the rotation very long anyhow.  Our 14 year old already wears 34 X 32 pants size ~ he's one big fella.  Seems sometimes like the only time we've seen that boy is when his tail's sticking out of the fridge or out of the pantry.

None of us have ever been sick from that sort of thing (thankfully).  Hope it stays that way, and I hope you're already on the mend!

If the can is not bulging I open it and heat it up.

If it doesn't make noise when you open the can, the food is still good- you're just a wuss.

If its not six to eight months or more, past the due date, eat it.
Or your weak kind will not survive.

OH and you can use the diarrhea to shed some pounds, provided you survive.

Do it up wus'boi  :salute

Good advice.  I used to think stuff like canned goods lasted forever.  Duh.  Now I check expiration dates on everything, including at the supermarkets where often expiration dates a week apart are stocked side by side.

No dount.  I was in my favorite super market week before last perusing the Mrs. Freshly's baked goods looking for my red velvet twinkies when I found an entire shelf with products that expired at the end of March/beginning of April.  WTF?

The red velvet twinkies are pretty badass, even though they don't taste much like velvet...

I suspect the noodles and stuff were fine, it was the chicken parts that were probably bad.

Remember back in the old days, 70's and such where you could buy cans that had been dented or lost there labels, for like 50% off? My mom used to buy them, with 9 kids you got to save money where you can. She had bought some cans of cornbeef hash i think it was that had the labels taped back on. 1 of them turned out to be alpo dog food. :lol

You still can.

It's a concern with pretty much any product containing meat.

Outside of that, canned goods can be stored almost indefinitely.

Anything with meat is a red flag more than a few months past expiration.

Hope you are feeling better, dude!

Dented cans yes, cans that have lost there labels, not sure? I think my state has a law against that now? I buy dented cans once in awhile but not more than i can eat in a week or so. IMO the pull top cans aren't as good as the totally sealed ones.
I feel fine today, was actually sorting and packing to move while munching on a ham sandwich. :aok

More important - do you check the packaging location on the label?
Try to find a can of mushrooms that wasn't packed in China - and imagine what that water those mushrooms are floating in consist of.....

I rarely buy canned foods anymore - but if we do ... we always look to see if packaged in the USA... atleast there is some chance the FDA was watching for a little while...

:rofl Nwbie that's funny as heck for this reason. I live in illinois, right about the middle of the state, and there are 5 mushroom growing plants within 60 miles of my house. :lol

Is it a cannery - or do they package for the vegetable section in a grocery?

They do it from the growing room to the bottle/can that you buy on the shelf. Only 1 of them actually grows the larger mushrooms and sells directly to the stores fresh veggie department.

It's a nasty bad paying place to work. Minimum wage and the only way to make more is to pick/harvest over your quota for your hour, but the quota is so high it's rarely reached. You know it's a suxy place to work when even illegals won't work there. They have ads in the paper daily looking for workers. :(
