Title: How'd you pick your dog?
Post by: texasmom on June 20, 2008, 12:31:47 AM
Been lots of dog threads lately, eh?

How'd you pick your dog?

In our household, we don't pick the dog, we let the dog pick us.  Then among the family, the dog picks the family member.  Instead of Josh or Caleb or Isaac "getting a dog,"  we decide to get a dog, then whichever of us the dog draws itself to (it will definitely do that), gets to say "that's my dog."  For the first week, should see our sons trying to court that dog (puppy) to see if it will pick him! LOL ~ looks kinda like Shrek's donkey jumping ~ "pick me! oooh! pick me!  pick me!"  :)

Anyhow, that method has always worked well for super relationships. :)

By size really... The big one eill normally tip the can for the lil bstages. Once the big one is committed, wing him hard..he'll yeld orders to retreat and head to the fence hole they came from.
Now here you also have to wing the fastest dog to the fence..wait till half way into thr fence and wing him... he block's the hole that has two injured dog wanting to get thru

Dogs and I have never gotten along.  I don't like them and they don't like me, it's an uneasy truce.  But the times the border has been breached has been downright ugly.  The cold war continues...

The wife decided that for my birthday she was going to get me a Siberian Husky, a breed I like.
We went together to the breeder, not a puppy mill, but a reputable breeder. As we pulled into
the yard I looked to my right and in the pen were eleven identical faces staring at us as they
sat in a line at the fence.

Inside the pen all of the puppies were jumping and running around me seeking my attention. All
except for one who calmly strolled over and sat on my foot.

Bandit Keshka Mohawk Schiver has been by my side for the past five years.

I probably told this story in here before, because I asked for advice on labradors when I first saw my dog, but here are the sordid facts...

My old job was right next door to the animal shelter. I would often stop in there just to visit with the dogs, it was a place I could de-stress on a bad day.

Anyway, one day I went in and there was this big.. and I mean 120lb... lab sitting in the back corner cell looking like his world had crumbled. I went over to visit with him and he just sat as close as he could possibly get to the wire mesh and looked at me as if I were his only hope.

I went home that night and talked to my wife about getting this dog. It was a bad idea, we had a dog and a cat already. I was pretty insistant. I told her to go down and look at him before we (that "we" was a joke for all you married guys) made up our minds.

So the next morning she called me at work and told me how cute the dog was and that she agreed he seemed nice, but unfortunately he was adopted already.

I was a little sad, but happy he had a home, so at my lunch time I went over to the shelter to wish the old boy well. While I was back at his cage a Shelter employee happened by. I asked about the people who adopted Bradley (he already had that name). The employee said he was not adopted yet.

I was pissed! My wife lied to me! I went to the desk and filled out the paperwork immediately to adopt the dog. Now in CA you have to neuter any animal you adopt, and the cost is based on weight, so this was not cheap.... then I called my wife.

Turns out there was a group called Lab Rescue that was going to take Bradley. So he wasn't actually adopted, just wasn't going to be killed. My wife knew this. I didn't.

We are still married, and Bradly is still my best buddy.

My hunting partner gave us a puppy test sheet, and I did several tests with the batch of pure bred labs that we chose. The puppy test was not unlike this:

I walked into the Humane Society and strolled through the pens. I saw a little dog that looked funny in a cage by himself, so I went into its cage. It practically exploded with excitement... and then I was getting out of the cage, it made its break for it. I ended up running a thousand yard sprint chasing this dog through buildings, around buildings, and finally into the walking area.

So I took him home with me.

We got a new puppy in May, it's part Lab and part border collie, really really smart for a puppy. Within the first 2 weeks of getting it, we easily taught it how to sit/stay with out even trying. It's gonna be a good hunting dog.

My wife went with her friend who was going to pick out a dog. We had talked about getting one of our own and I was about ready. Like Storch, it took me a while to get ready to have another dog.

Well, while there one came over and brought her a stick and licked her. Well, I went to see him 30 minutes later and we left with him. He's now 5, a Schnauzer/Poodle mix who is a great dog. A lot of personality, very sweet and pretty smart. He loves people and other dogs. A trip to the Vet is still like a trip to Disney Land for him, except for the few minutes he is actually up on the table.

I haven't graduated to the economic status of owning a house yet and finding a rental to allow dogs is like finding the secret universe where dryer socks disappear to.  Anyways... my wife and I live with two cats.

She adopted one at the shelter before we moved in together a few years ago and I adopted my own a year later.  Before I picked out my current cat I strolled past the dogs (as much as I love my cat, I grew up as a dog person).  My heart really goes out to some of the animals in there.  I always spend the most time with the 'saddest' animals as I can't imagine what its like to sit there for almost a year for some.

As much as I'd like to get a puppy when I finally own some property, the under-appreciated shelters I think require my attention.

Growing up, my mother was a Shepherd breeder.  I always kept the ones that didn't freak out at the sound of a gunshot, etc.  Pretty tough criteria if ya wanna make sure you have the right one for.........

<S>  Isn't that the truth!
Mal's and Shepards are my favorite breeds.  Very stubborn at times though.  Sneaky and smart too!  Currently looking for another Mal to train in search and rescue.

Brandy picked us.  I went out to a farm to look at her, and she jumped into the car thru an open window and crawled into the backseat.  Nothing like a 130 pound dog in the backseat of a Suzuki Sidekick....

We had to put her down 3 years ago, but for 10 years we couldn't have asked for a better dog to pick us. :)

The daughter had a friend who found a stray pug. She told her Mom who just had to go see it. She saw it, done deal. :frown:

Turned out to be a really sweet dog, perfectly house trained and very well behaved. One of the best dogs I have ever been around.

Was working from home one summer and, in the afternoons, squids friends and he would gather at my house and play yugioh.  One day one of the kids comes in and tells me there's a stray dog in my yard.  I go outside, call her, and she comes right up to me.  No tags but looks like she's been well cared for.  I let her in the house and she sees squid and goes right up to him, jumps on the couch, and curls up next to him.  We did the poster / flyer thing around the neighborhood for a couple of weeks with no bites and decided to keep her.  Took her to the vet who identified her as a Llewellin Setter.  Best dog I've ever had or will have.  Great with kids, loves to play frisbee, highly intelligent, and loyal.  Downsides is they shed like crazy and if they get a chance to run they will run all day.  Also in their puppy stages they bore easily and like to chew so my couch resembles the one I had when I was fresh out of high school in my first apartment.  Who needs great furniture when you have the noble beast 'sparky'

We are a goofy, fun loving family...we WEREN'T looking for a goofy dog...but we took one home both times.

(For Maximillian von Richthofen, 7 year old)  When we went to look at him at the breeder we were already apprehensive; the breeder had already told us on the phone that there was only one male left (6 females), so the picking on males was already slim.  We get there and the breeder's wife tells us she just gave him a bath (he was still a little wet), but he had already somehow got gum all over one of his paws.

Within minutes, I see him dragging an empty dog food bag 10x his size aroung the yard, then rolling all over the yard getting grass clippings in his fur.  Then he ran over to the horses and wanted to pick a fight with one of them--got bored in :30 seconds, then went over and visited his mom (who acted like she knew what was going to happenend--and exchanged kisses).  Then he ran over to his dad's cage--then over to his sisters cage--with 6 tails wagging like electric metronones.  On the way home he fell asleep in my arms.  He has been a fun loving goofball ever since.

(For Anke von Richthofen, 4 months old)  When we went to the breeder we had plenty of chices.  There were 8 girls in the girls kennel.  It was 8 tails wagging and all saying "PICK ME...PICK ME!!!"  We had it down to two, but as we were deciding, one sat down and stared off--the other kept licking our fingers and said "PICK ME...PICK ME!!!"  As soon as the breeder brought her out of the kennel she avoided the sidewalks and concrete and commenced to run right into a mudpuddle.  On the way home he fell asleep in my arms.

They are an excellent couple.  She already rules the roost (he doesn't know it yet).

You're right, TMom -- just as in marriage a smart guy lets the wife choose him, he also lets the dog choose him.  Saves a lot of time and frustration.  Of course he has to be very selective and tactful to avoid disappointing a lot of women and dogs.

My last one chose me. Came to the door in a pouring rain shivering and cold making all kinds of noises. I opened the door and took pitty on her and brought her in, dried her off and gave her some food. She decided she liked me and snuggled up with me that night in bed and i said what the heck i'll keep her.

She never messed anything up, would eat just about anything, and showered me with affection when ever i came home.

I'd walk in the door and she'd start meowing and try to climb my pant leg, purring up a storm.........oh wait this is a doggie thread? OOOOpppssss :rofl

She was about 13 the vet said when she passed away, best cat i ever had. :salute

My Mom moved in with my wife and I 16 months before she dide. During that time she had mentioned on several occasions that she would like to have another dog. Her's had died a year before. I was adiment not to have one.

One day about 2 months or so before she passed away she woke up in a really down mood and not feeling well at all. While she was resting I told my wife I was goiing out a while and would be back later. She asked where I was headed and I told her to get mom a dog. She said she was going to. So off we went on a dog hunt.

After looking at all the local shelters for a small dog , we bought a paper. We decided we would by her a shi-tzu. We found a 10 week old puppy and went to see it. We fell in love with Brinkley right off. He was lovable and extremly cute.

We paid for him and took him home. When we got home Mom was just waking from a nap. I stood in the kitchen while they brought her to the back porch. She rounded that corner to go thru the kitchen to the back and her eyes lit up. SHe just fell in love with Brinkley.

He stayed with my Mom at her feet or right beside her bed or in it until she passed away. He was NEVER far from her and was very protective of her. STrange how he just knew.

At any rate we always knew that when Mom passed Brinkley would be ours. We've had him since we brought him home for mom and he is the joy of the house alot of time. Since then we bought a female for him as he was depressed after Mom died and everything settled down and all the people were gone.

We have Brinkley , Bailey , Lilly (one of thier kids) and Cookie. We love em all.

i have had a bunch of breeds through my life, all the typical ones, Sheppard's, rotties, huskies, ect...
but once i got my female American pitbul Terrier, she made all the other dogs i have had, and others that i knew, seem like they were just playing at the dog role,

its sad because so many people are  biased against Pitts, they have no idea!!  we love dogs for certain qualities they posses, like there unconditional love, zest for life, desire to please its master...

if you were to take all dogs and form a pyramid with the best "all around" towards the top, there is only one dog that sits at the pinnacle and thats the American Pitbull Terrier, and he sits so far above the rest, he is beyond ALL breeds.

of course this is just my humble opinion, (well maybe not so humble).

oh ya i only pick pitts now!!

WOW freaky. My new upstairs neighbor started moving in today. She has a pure bred male Husky and a pure bred female silver Doberman. Both are from a rescue shelter in chicago. The original owners gave them up because they were moving out of the country. They have their papers, shots, the whole 9 yards. Friendly as heck dogs also which is always nice to see when they move into an apartment.

When I picked my German Shepherd puppy we did a few tests on him to see if he was alert, fearful, that kinda thing- we dropped car keys behind him to see if he was afraid of noise, then put him on his back and checked to make sure he didn't snarl, held a piece of food to see if he'd keep his focus... We ended up with what looked like a bright, well adjusted puppy...or so we thought.

His true colors didn't surface until he was 4-5 months old. We'd take him to this dog park to socialize him with other dogs, and as he reached puberty he develped an attraction for other male dogs- he was definately gay, and praticed his gayness with other male dogs whenever he had the chance. Finally it got to be too much, especially since he seemed to prefer being the catcher, so we had to have him put down. It was sad, but really, who wants a homosexual dog?
