Sad thing is, the first thing the owner probably thought was "Damn, I just filled up this morning".

So,  now a Jeep is considered an SUV?  :huh

We'll have to re-write history books. "Patton drove the Germans to the Rhine, riding in his SUV...."

But it also torched that fine Detroit whatchamacallit beside it too. :)

Not funny, a full tank in a Jeep doubles the book value.

I wonder if he had a "jerry can" of gas on the jeep that might have been venting.

It's ok everybody!  That's not a real jeep!

It's a 4 door cherokee with a leather soft top.

Well, I guess I'll have to rethink my Lightning Avoidance Procedure of, at the first sign of a thunderstorm, rushing out of my house and driving around in my car.

Count the doors.

If it has more than 2 and a back gate, it's not a jeep.

But it's still a Wrangler Unlimited...it says so on the front quarter panel.

The reason a car is safe is it creates a metal cage effect. If the car is not metal all the way around (jeep), it won't make the cage effect. I used to work real high up is a metal office ( metal all the way around) as a dispatcher. In 20 years, lighting hit the office 4 times ( never with me in it) and did no damage.

Edit: Here's a link to the cage effect:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage

Quote
When lightning strikes an aircraft or a car the electric currents induced on it are forced to travel on the outer skin of the vehicle's body. If you were in a car, and the car were struck by lightning, it is not in fact the rubber tires that would save your life. If the lightning can jump from the ground to the sky, then it can jump from the ground to your car. What actually happens, is by being enclosed by the car's cabin, the lightning travels around you, through the conductive frame of the car. This is because the car forms a Faraday Cage.

But the pics were taken at 10:20, so the tank would have probably been close to empty by then ;)

Thats the great thing about physics. You can miss a few centuries and not miss much  :) Yea I know - relativity - its a flash in the pan.

There was a great line in that sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" where the girl asks the nerd " So, what's new in physics?"

He looks around blankly - " Nothing."

Yeah I love that show too. I get most of the jokes..........does that make me a nerd?  If so I'm a failed nerd because I never went to college :cry

As for the lightning strike on the jeep. How unlucky is that? Does the insurance cover you for 'acts of God'.

We had a lightning storm (rare) here yesterday. One simultaneous flash/bang made my wife scream and me jump. I think it hit a nearby tower crane on a construction site.

Nobody has stated the two most likely causes:

1. Spontaneous Human Combustion

or (the more likely)

2. He was vulched trying to up from the hanger.

Just curious.

I notice two troubling things about the Jeep.

1.)  It appears to have 18" wheels on it.
2.)  If one of the said "tires" go, then what good will the stock spare do for them?

I've never understood this at all and never will.    Not to mention putting that crap on it to make it a mallcrawler.

Just be glad nobody was hit. Electrical burns travel circuitous routes through the body, usually beneath the surface, making it really hard for doctors to treat them. (i.e.  BUMP :D)
