Anyone know?

Microsoft will stop selling XP to vendors and PC makers after June 30th (ie the end of this month). How long vendors will have it available depends on if they stocked up a lot or not. Newegg is still selling it, you can even get XP SP3. How fast they run out after June 30th depends on how many they ordered and how many are bought. To be safe, I'm probably going to build a new system, and order XP Pro, before the end of the month.

June 24, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. yesterday laid to rest rumors that it might reconsider pulling Windows XP from retail shelves and from most PC makers next Monday.
.....
Elsewhere Microsoft re-emphasized that although XP will be tougher to buy after next Monday, it will not disappear overnight. In a new FAQ on its Web site, it said, as it has elsewhere, that retailers and computer makers were allowed to sell out their stocks. "You may still see copies of the software -- or computers pre-loaded with it -- for months, as stores and PC makers work through their inventory," said the FAQ.
.....
And Veghte reminded users that Microsoft will support Windows XP for several more years. According to previously-scheduled timetables, XP continues in "mainstream support" until April 14, 2009, and won't be dropped from "extended support" until after April 8, 2014.

I really feel sorry for OEM computer buyers. They are going to be sooooo screwed.

Not if you get one from Dell. Dell will take advantage of a licensing option in Vista Business and Vista Ultimate that lets PC makers provide XP under the Vista license, which Microsoft calls a "downgrade" license.

Oh, I figured Dell would not allow Microsoft to dictate to them they cannot sell XP. There are far too many businesses in this country who simply cannot afford to suffer the compatibility issues with Vista. Many of them are government contractors.
It will just cost more to get XP as a result of Microsoft killing Windows XP.
I already have my spare copies of XP Pro.

"Hey you...hand over that software"!

I feel bad for you. How many WHY ISNT VISTA SUPPORTED emails do you think you'll get by next year this time?
BTW yea it sucks for business folks. Our infrastructure is still running on 256 megs of ram p4 machines. Probably need upgraded, and will be - but the upgraded machines are coming in with 1 gig ram and dual core. Still not enough for vista ultimate.
It's not even that. It's the apps. We run SOOOOOOOO many apps that I have no idea what is going to happen.
Probably going to have to hire another helpdesk guy, our test group is going to go insane, and people like me will have to hear about it and deal with it 1st hand, 2nd hand allllllllllllllll the way down to the bottom floor on the elevator etc etc etc.
It's going to SUCK. Not like people thought xp was goign to make things suck when win98se was phased out - like REALLY suck suck!

Noticed though that Dell is the only one doing this, haven't seen anything similiar from other OEM makers. Anyway, glad I picked myself up two copies of XP Pro from NewEgg. Another thing I noticed is that the 32-bit version of XP Pro was slightly more expensive than the 64-bit version.

Well, I'm not sure if I'm going to build another one or not. Is xp home just as good as xp pro? Still though, I would like to have a spare just in case. I have 2 copies of xp home right now. However, I wonder if they are not intended just for my expired dell and expired compaq.

Still runnin win98se here :O

I was running Win98SE, until I got a newer ATI card and it wouldn't work in 98SE. so had to upgrade to XP home and lose my CH stick and throttle. Now I have to use X52 which I hate, can't afford the cost of a new CH stick and throttle.
Well, my 2 cents worth

ordered 3 PCs from HP last week, downgraded to XP and the sales guy told me that roughly 1/2 of the business level desktops they are selling are ordered with XP downgrade...

I've still got two machines running Win98SE and one running XP Pro.

Well fellas,
I have to say this, Vista 64 bit is a lot more than pretty.
Yes Fulmar, I am 1 of the idiots that you have mentioned, & I'm glad that I am!
:D
No need of me saying anything more.
One day y'all will find out.

I heard that this new oceanliner coming out is unsinkable. I can't recall the name of it though...

Yes, that is why Vista is the worst selling OS since WIndows ME. And it is actually doing worse than Windows ME if you take away OEM sales for both.
It is so good, Microsoft cannot wait to replace it. So why bother with Vista? Did you also fall for the Windows ME gaff? Or did you also think it was just a wonderful OS as well?
Or was it just sarcasm and I bit the hook?
-
Would it do any good if us gamers wrote to microsoft and tell them what we wanted an OS to do?

Hell no. Microsoft makes vast majority of their sales in the commercial/business market.
-
Fulmar is quite right.
Microsfot would love to stear all gamers away from PC's and to the X-Box.
-
I think MS also just announced DX11 in in the works to replace DX10.1.

Ooooo! Not having a dedicated game console I never thought of that.

I cry myself to sleep at night because this is all happening at a time that I can't afford to stock up on XP CDs. I only have one Home installation...not exactly "prepared for the future." :cry
I am lucky that I figured out how to make my own customized XP CD, so at least I'll always have my install, even if I lose my CD key. But, still. It's Home. Augh.
