Title: Sherman AA ???
Post by: Yarbles on June 24, 2008, 05:35:51 AM
I thought the opintle gun on Shermans was an AA gun and a .50 not a .30 which makes perfect sense to me. .30 anti personel but way too weedy to shoot down aircraft. The LVT,S and M3, M16 AND M8 have .50s I believe.

So what is going on?

It's a Sherman Firefly. A British tank. Didn't have .50 cal on it. No British tanks use it. If you Google pics of Firefly you'll notice that most have no gun on the top of the turret at all. However, there are a few pictures which show field modified Firefly tanks with .30 cal on them so that's why it's there.

I wonder why they bothered when it is so ineffective but I accept your explanation entirely. The SDherman started in North Africa where the Sherman though less than the Grant suffered form a high silouette. The .50 was therefore removed. I am surprised it was re introduced albeit as a .30 in Normandy as that is where the Firely started active service.

The English didn't see the point in the external machine guns on any of their tanks, not just the Sherman, that is why it was removed.
Take a look around at the other tanks the Poms used you wont see many externally mounted machine guns. I guess they didn't see the point in placing the commander out in the open to be picked off whilst he was manning the gun.

Sharrk...

Too late!!!!!    :D

It looks pretty cool.  Would be a nice addition to the Allied ground set.  But, we do have the Wirblewind, so more AA guns may have to wait.
