Title: Horsa Gliders- How could we incorporate them into the MA?
Post by: DaveJ on June 24, 2008, 11:57:21 AM
Probably a very stupid suggestion.

Horsa Gliders played an important part in WWII as troop carriers and supply carriers. Most likely they would have to carry the normal 10 troops, but 20 should not be out of the question. They could be towed along by C-47s or Lancasters (in the absence or the Halifax) at high altitudes and let loose during a base taking mission if NOE is out of the question. Naturally gliders would have to be extremely vulernable and easy to shoot down, but if there are masses of them all descending on a town then it is feasible for 1 or two to make it.

I don't know how Horsa Gliders could be incorporated into the MA besides this. Alot more expansion can be done on this idea but these are just my initial thoughts.

Not a stoopid suggestion at all.  If there are ways to 1> broaden gameplay without taking away the original goal of this sim (accurate WWII air combat sim'ing), 2> add in another offensive aspect (actual soldier offensive combat), 3> add in another aspect with minimal coding, then why not?

If the glider was incorperated, I think HTC would have to expand the role of troops in the game.  For instance, perhaps troops could be an offensive source instead of just cargo to capture the flag (commando raid on dar, barracks, fuel, vh, fh, bh, etc).  Perhaps troops landed by a glider could have double or triple the distance of ground travel ability vs troops dropped by C47.  Hey.... what about taking away the C47's ability to drop troops while on the ground (the goon would HAVE to 800ft + to drop troops effectively)?  Let glider's trick be to dispense troops on the ground and not the C47's???  How many C47's in WWII landed in a hot DZ and let their highly trained paras or commandoes off using the stairs?

Would be an interesting way to double troops for a goon and give increased chance for successful capture. C-47 would be chugging along but they're extremely vulnerable anyway. Maybe a small perk since there is no A-26 to spend them on :)

I would rather see the Ju-52.

The only thing I ask if they get added, is they don't show up on radar, because they would be completely worthless if they did... after all...you couldn't hear them.

And radar cares if you can hear something since when?

Can you hear the rain fall? OH NOES! WE CAN'T SEE WEATHER COMING!  DOOMED I SAY!

Weren't these Horsas wooden? IIRC, the makeup of an aircraft in WWII DID affect it's radar signature.

I would like this...take 5 bombers formations with one or 2 dragging a glider, level all hangars and the town while the glider is gliding down....and capture  :aok

Great tool to add to my shed. Bit too uber maybe  :aok

It may be a bit too under-uber though. And you would need to have somebody join you though.

Not necessarily. Once you cast off your glider, the pilot of the bomber could be transferred into the glider, and the bomber could just end up crashing or disappear entirely.

that sounds too gamey to me.  I agree with someone in this thread about having the Ju-52 instead

Turn the goons engine off...instant troop glider. See how easy it was to fix and incorporate this idea into play?  :salute

A bit gamey yes. Then the only other option Is to have extra pilots for the gliders.

And I'd love to see the Ju-52 as well.

sure... but I was replying directly to the fact that the guy said:
