Does the onboard sound use resources at idle. My other computer is 0% at idle. I heard Skuzzy say once it should be between 0 and 2%. That was about the only difference I saw. I've overclocked as well. Will that use more resources at idle?
-
Generally speaking your better off going with a good sound card rather than onboard sound.
Onboard will use more CPU to do the same thing, which will have a effect on how smooth AH runs.
As to whats using that 5%, good question.
I'd be tempted to use something like xptools, or fsautostart etc, to see whats running that doesn't need to be.

That's very good idea Ghost. I think I will get a sound card soon. Not sure which one. Was waiting for a reply from Skuzzy about th asus xonar.

Getback,
Get the Xonar!
E'nuff said.
:D

I terminated about every possible service and it never dropped. It stayed between 4 and 7 % with 4 and 5 coming up most often.
Any other ideas?

It looks like the culprits are the onboard sound and zonealarm. I'm still not real sure but those two use the most memory. When I dropped it to 22 items. It said I was using 224mgs at idle. Still thought is said it was using 4-6% of resources. I'm not sure I understand. I have 3.25 gig of usable ram. I'm just not sure still why it is so much.

Go into the BIOS and disable the on-borad sound then check it. At least then you'll know if that's it.
Mine uses 0% at idle.

I have onboard sound and only use 0 -2%, what CPU are you using?
-
I use an E8400.

This is what I have discovered. Generally, except for the onboard sound both computers are using the same processes. But on my gaming PC they are generally higher. For instance Explorer.exe is using 45000k and on my amd it is using only 34000k. Ashwebsv.exe is using 34000k on the gaming pc and only 24000 on the AMD.
This is at desktop. Anyone have an explanation? I don't have any applications running.

Are you running an antivirus? Automatic updates? many things can cause it, including rootkits and ad/malware infections.
Do a netstat -an in command prompt to see if your computer gets connected somewhere outside where it shouldn't.

How do I do that MrRipley?
Thanks for the help.

Start button, run, type cmd, hit enter and a black cli box opens (cli - command line interface). Type netstat -an, hit enter and your away mate.

Did that, it didn't give me any detail. Just proto etc.
Update. Got it to work. (I must learn to read very carefully) The address in the Address in the Local and in the forum are the same. Does that mean I'm okay? I never saw any other addresses.
