Title: My slight misadventure.
Post by: Getback on June 26, 2008, 09:40:14 PM
As many of you know I have been on this Over clocking trip. Well, last night I thought I had done myself in. I OC'd to 3.6 ghz and it seemed to run okay, just okay. So I thought I would test it with orthos and wham the thing spit out errors. I thought well, maybe I would adjust the fan. That was fatal. It dropped to zero and the machine shut down. It's a safety feature. I tried working on it a little bit this morning and no luck. Work was a slow slow day and everyone was just kicking back before busy next week. So I did some research on the net. I found to reset the Uguru bios you have to turn the machine off 3 times. However, you have to do it like this. Press start and hold it until it comes on and shuts down. All one move. I did that 3 times and it worked. It worked great. It reset my Cpu back to 3 ghz and I got an extra bonus. My fan had been running at 1360 rpms. I thought that was slow. Now it runs at 3260 rpms. Hmmm I thought. So I once again OC'd the chip to 3.45. Nary a problem uh so far. Anyway, I partially learned my lesson. I'm leaving it at the current clock speed.

Just thought I would tell my tale in case someone runs across the same issue.

And he got his finger burned (figuratively) and got a bandaid and 3 in 1 ointment and fixed the burning.  However he now has his finger stretching out ever closer again to the magic clock, twitching, yearning, waaaaanting to feel some heat again...... tick tock  tick  tock  tick tock  tick tock  tick tock   tick tock  tick  tock  tick tock  tick tock  tick tock

It's just too darn tempting. But each time I screw up I lean something.  :rock Of course it's sometimes a very hard lesson.

I'm done with it. Had my little tryst. I am leaving it at 4.35 though. Oops I meant 3.45. I do have to update the bios though. It has some features for the 45nm technology. Other than that I am done. Trust me!
Appreciate all the warnings as well.

It is running great right now. I cannot complain at all.

Have you noticed a considerable boost in performance?

When I had it at 3.6 I sure did. However, it rebooted 2x at that setting. I upped the vcore a bit and it seemed okay. But I got nervous and moved it back.

So yeah, I think so a little at 3.45. I know I don't want to go back to 3.0.

Reset my bios and it wiped out all my overclocking. Not sure if I going to oc again or not. Right now I am leaning toward that. I tell you at 3.6 it was WOW! Still though that makes me nervous. I will probably go to 3.45 again if I oc.

:lol   Jeez Getback.  Just get a tickety tockety wind up alarm clock so its loud and wind it up, and put it underneath the cpu box.  Then you will literally be "overclocked"

You need to install proper cooling if you overclock. Heavy duty aircooling or preferably water.

That's as far as I am going to go MrRipley. I use a Zalman air cooler. Looks like a small nuclear plant.
