Furballing in crater lake (can I call it that? :P) is just as different from the main arena as people say it is. Some of the pilots there are just plain :huh, but others are decent. I can say with confidence that the average pilot in the main arena is tougher. That said, it still has some positive qualities that make it worth a visit from time to time.
1. It is not the main arena and there's plenty of action.
2. There's almost zero vultching/hording; most people seem content to fight over the water.
3. Fuel burn is set to 1x.
4. You can fly all of the perk fighters except the 262 and 163 for nothing (although I have plenty of perks).
5. There's very little complaining because it seems to be the one place where there are no rules whatsoever... buyer beware! :D
For my part, it's a useful place to practice with the 109K's tater because the % of time you spend fighting is much higher than the main arena.

Let the cartoon pilets decide weather to use "outside views" or not. The DA is a fun place..IF your able to deal with all the "squeaks" . :D

I agree

When it gets crowded your chances of finishing a fight are nill.

I love the the DA but it has become pretty crowded lately. I encouraged my squad to fly there and sent them this note a month or so ago.
Training in the Dueling Arena with other members of the squad will give you some hands on experience when it comes to wingman tactics or even general SA (Situation Awareness). Your Main Arena score is not affected when fighting there but your skill level should increase dramatically in a short amount of time.
The DA can be used to learn more than just wingman tactics tho.
Maybe you want to learn how to pick or B&Z (Boom and Zoom)
Maybe you want to learn a new plane or advance further in one you currently fly most often.
Maybe you just don't have time to hop up into the main and just want to get a few kills before mowing the grass...heheh
Anyway, it's a great place to learn, take some film and get some kills.

Back when we had a furball island (crater, lake...whatever it was) in the MA I would just something fly a FM2 through there without shooting at anyone (well, except LA-7's, cause they deserve to be shot) and see how long I could stay alive.
Just working on my SA, avoiding everyone (and shooting at La-7's of course), and just staying alive.
