On Sunday night I saw a player named Hapstr land an astounding 60 kills as a 5" gunner. I know this because about 8 of them were from me. This wasn't of the ilk where a thousand PT boats pop up and get blasted, this was shooting down bombers and planes against a CV with no cruiser escort over a long period of time.
I would come in with bombers at 7k, and as soon as I was in auto ack range I would see those vapor trails homing right in. POW! POW! one bomber left..POW.
I've been playing this game for about 5 years now, never could hit bombers with a 5" gun when they have any altitude. Not sure how some guys do that, or how you accurately lead planes like that.
I think it would be great if the training arena had that piper sight for 5" practice, so you could see how to lead a set of bombers with alt (as opposed to them flying right at you, which is easy)
Anyway, well done. That was an epic AH moment imo.

You gotta know how to range the bombers. Sometimes, I'll shoot, then zoom in as far as I can, take a look at where I'm at, then repeat till I get it right. :aok
-
I once hit an F6F crossing at high speed about 4k out with the 5". That's my best feat. I've come close to hitting low level B25's and such out of icon range as well.
-
I've lost 2 262's to Auto puffy ack in the last 6 months. I'm not one to spend time in 262's in general (probably flown 5 times in those 6 months). Both times I was high alt doing at least 450. I try to avoid fleet battles if I'm in a perk plane.
But I know some guys are premo with their 5 inchers. I don't doubt their skill.

Best shot ever seen was when I was 5k from fleet and squaddie was shooting at a con and asked me how far from me he was. I responded 6K. Guess what he did next shot? He hit that poor feller 11K out. Couldn't believe it. Wished I recorded it. We laughed our freakin heads off the next couple of sorties. His name was Stroker1 in the 5in. This is no bull. I swear on this one. :aok

I just fire randomly into a furball close to the cv and hope I hit someone ;)
-
Frankly a blind, deaf man with parkinsons could get kills with a 5 inch gun.
-
Hitting anything below about 10k is pretty easy on the 5' guns I will only attack a CV at 10.5k or better . I have found that is about as low as you want to take bombers to a CV if you want to survive on your pass. For the LanStuka types anything goes for those guys.

No not altitude near the edge of the dar ring

The trick is... watch the puffs the 5"AA is proximity fuzed :aok

In RL yes, but HOW do they instantly follow you as you change alt/direction/speed?
-
I figured you for a bad speller and let you stir my hopes. I have a secret foot fetish, you see. What a letdown :cry

weell the 5"ers are player controlled. once you start to see puffs you know you're getting close. try it out you will see fast results ;)

But how do you switch the 5" from HE to AA?

5" are firing AA by default. To switch to HE and back, use BACKSPACE.

I've known Hap for a long time and he has always been good in those 5" guns. I'm with you Dred, I would be there for 3 days straight trying to get that many kills. I've been playing for 4 years now and I doubt I have 60 kills TOTAL in a 5" :rofl

Thank you Sir

After you've learned how, anything can seem easy. Personally I struggle with tasks that need deflection shooting -- and the longer the range, the worse I get.
-
I've been getting better and better in the 5" (check my score and you'll see I've got more kills with them rather than in fighters). I can generally start killing stuff as it comes into icon range, and I'm getting better at long-lead deflection shots too. The best advice I heard a while ago: if you want to get good in manned-gun at bases (or 5" on ships), when you attack them start recording video. If there's a good shot manning the gun, play back the video from his perspective and see what he's doing to kill you that easily.
I haven't actually gotten around to do that, but will soon. There's a good gunner that I've heard about that will kill you from man-gun with one or two shots from 3-4k out.

Be careful when analyzing someone else's gunnery from your films. Due to lag you can't really see what he did see on his screen. You even may wonder why his target exploded while all his tracers went 100 yards past them.

Backspace key

Is this a new feature. You can't or at least didn't used to be able to go to a filmed mannable ack. Not unless it's your film from an ack. To clarify...if you film from a plane you can switch to a baddies plane in film viewer but you can't go from plane to ack gun in viewer.

It does. Simply press the Tab key to turn it on vs enemies. For friendlies, you have to first enable friendly lock by pressing Ctl-Tab. Of course you'll need a willing partner to play target drone for you.

ive hit a p51 from beyond icon range once, he dove in and dropped on the carrier right as I got to the tower..
hopped in a 5 incher, only to see hom screaming away on the deck, fired 2 shots, both missed.. then as he passed 6.0 i fired a third, all i see is a black dot, then a little puff, then the black down starts dropping and i get the kill message.
other than that once occurance ive never been very effective with them beyond 3.0 or so.

I've done that at a furball that was 4.5-5.5 away just to see what kind of lead i needed, figured I'd at least get a burst near some body. Accidentally hit a guy that wasn't even in range yet.

Just to clarify, is there a way to set the range on the fuses or do they just explode when they get near an enemy plane? Also, I have noticed when I am firing 5" Guns I never seem to be able to see my rounds exploding in the air.

Far as I know, you cannot change the proxy fuze. You'll only see the puff of the explosion if the shell got close enough. If you're too far off the target, the shell will happily keep going until it finally hits the ground somewhere.

Our 5" guns use radio proximity fuses ... they are not timed fuses.

Best feat of mine was somehow, someway, landing a spitfire in a spin with gears and flaps down. I think I was drunk. And still on the runway. I can't really remember but boy howdy do I love a good whiskey!
