Someone once said...
If you can't or wont control yourself, BEWARE! There are many people who are, eagerly, joyously, dancing in place and giggling crazily, just waiting to do it for you.

Yanno.
If people tried to not "protect" their kids from every little thing.
They might learn to be old fashioned tough and not be over frikken sensitive.
They might learn that the world is not a nice neat little place where everyone is going to care about hurting your feelings, or your ears, or your eyes.
and thats part of the problem these days.
Parents want to protect their kids from every little thing and as thus they are not prepared to deal with the world as it really is.
The parent that tries to protect their kid from every little unpleasentry.
Ends up protecting their kid from nothing.
Because when it comes time they actually have to deal with this stuff. They dont know how. And they cant handle it.
-
yep.. there are plenty of people here who hang on every word looking for something not politically correct so that they can jump all over it with barely contained glee and pretend indignation. feigned outrage.
When they get slapped down they go stealth and cry a river to the moderators. Who bred these guys?

Do people NOT understand that if there is something being said, typed, or viewed that they don't like they have the CHOICE to walk away, log off, or change the freaking channel?

Do people understand that they, AND OTHERS, have the RIGHT to enjoy their $14.95 and NOT have to walk away, log off, or change the freaking channel?
Do people understand that HTC wants to stay in BUSINESS and therefore MUST take steps to safeguard THEMSELVES from possible LAW SUITES?
Not sayin free speech is good or bad....
Saying MANNERS are a big help in getting along with your fellow humans....
I agree about Parents and Children...
IF PARENTS taught their children MANNERS much of this kinda stuff wouldn't be necessary...
ALTHOUGH the PARENT in the case referred to in the article should have KNOWN BETTER!
-
I feel for the loss of the child...but where were her parents?
With the problems that she had , the internet was the last place she should have been.
Laws, more laws, bans and regs. Chip, chip , chip. Before you let something such as this pass a little thought needs to go into how it can be used in the future and what doors it opens to further the loss of freedom.
There are millions of people out there there that wish only to harm , harass, kill, steal, rob, rape, murder..on and on.
Teach your kids that, prepare them for it and how to deal with it.
It`s always been that way..long before the internet. It always will be.
IMHO putting rose colored glasses on a kid , then dumping them in the mix of the real world is a crime in itself.
No matter what is done in the search for eutopia, reality will still exist.

I wasn't talking about HTC, but about life in general. I don't care where you are, who you are, or what you believe, there is ALWAYS going to be someone around that has a different opinion, set of morals or lack of, or just a general unplesant disposition that you are going to have to deal with. Making a law to try and make that person act like you think they should act isn't going to solve anything.

So what happens when I use a computer that someone has left their forum/myspace/facebook/whatever signed in and I go about harassing people on the internet?

 Shades....
Who bred them? Excellent question.
My guess is credit card companies...but I'm not sure.

I think it's not necessary to remove all 'damaging' venues from kids. Regardless of whether they're somewhere (in person, online, on the phone, wherever) you approve of or not... they're going to run into all kinds of awful people... great people. Probably better to help them distinguish the good or destructive paths... and encourage them to choose goodness for themselves & in their friendships instead of choosing the destructive friends & choices that lead to destructiveness in their own lives.
Are they going to screw up? Absolutely. Painful? Yep. But hopefully they've also been taught to demonstrate enough resilience to get up & keep on keeping on.
Sorry for that lady on the loss of her girl. Maybe or maybe not on being preventable with others in the future. Kids have been killing themselves an awful long time before the internet was around though.
-
Sad sad legislation. The girl was depressed anyway. Why weren't the parents watching. I know a friend of mine use to look on her daughter's account to make sure things were on the up and up.

Some may actually gasp at what I say here but:
I have an 8 year old daughter who's got a mean streak
and a 6 year old son who loves bugs and matchbox cars
Well the 8 year old (love her to death) thrives on picking on the boy. So much so that he ends up crying to me. When he does I say the same thing to him: "Go punch her in the face"
now keep in mind he has yet to do it....he's a real kind boy.....BUT I made the mistake of saying that at a birthday party once and it was like I was banished to parent hell afterwords. I tried to explain that it kills 2 birds with one stone IE the 8 year old doesn't become a bully and the 6 year old learns to stand up to bullys. Maybe I'm just simple minded but I think it's a great plan. I tell him every time he crys "Son, she will continue to pick on you until you hit back". I punish the daughter but it's kinda in her nature sometimes.
If parents let there kids get scraped knees more often stuff like this would be unnecessary. I feel for the parents thought they want somone to blaim.

It's Missouri.
I'm not worried.

Gunslinger, it certainly works ~ espec. with mean older sisters (no matter how wonderful they are). I had two little brothers that I used to beat the CRAP out of. When I was about 12, they finally realized that they were stronger than I was... and had enough of my beatings... waited until our folks were gone, got me behind closed doors & beat the crap out of me. After that, I barked off my orders to them with a *SMILE* (but I never stopped barking off the orders... just stopped beating them up).
