Disgusting.........to say the least. what say you?
A singer surprised dignitaries by singing Lift Every Voice and Sing, also known as the "black national anthem," to the tune of The Star-Spangled Banner during the mayor's State of the City address yesterday in Denver.
Rene Marie, who was introduced by City Council president Michael Hancock to perform the national anthem, says she made the switch without informing the mayor's office.
Marie tells The Denver Post she decided to switch the lyrics months ago and will no longer sing the national anthem because she sometimes feels like a foreigner in the USA.
"When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: 'I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,'" Marie tells KUSA-TV, a fellow Gannett property.
Lift Every Voice and Sing was first performed in 1900 to commemorate almost 40 years of freedom for blacks in America.
Mayor John Hickenlooper says he discussed the situation with Marie following her performance. "She was very apologetic," he tells the Post. "She meant no disrespect, and she was singing an artistic expression she thought represented love and hope for her country."
Marie tells KUSA-TV she has no regrets.
The Rocky Mountain News says the City Council president has been receiving hate mail, even though he had never met Marie before he introduced her at the State of the City event.
"I'm getting — as if I made the decision to do this — I'm receiving a lot of hate mail," he says. "I've received quite a few e-mails that are quite nasty."

Poor decision by someone who violated the terms of her invitation to sneak in a personal agenda at the expense of her hosts.

my first instinct is that it has a lot more to do with her promoting herself...more than anything else.
my second instinct...is to ask where the nation of "black" is?

She sings the 'black national anthem' yet feels like a foreigner...

Lets just have the race war and get it over with.

Place your bets -- how long will this thread go before someone says she ought to be blackballed?

I think that I won't lose the slightest bit of sleep over it.

Jose Feliciano at the 68 world series, Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, Marvin Gaye's funk version at the NBA finals ... performers have been interpreting the song for a long time, as with any song. Who is to say what's the "right" way to perform it. Afterall, it was written as a poem and only later fitted to a melody, an old British drinking song.
Not exactly the most panty-bunching thing I've ever heard but hey, they're your panties.

Bunch of nonconformist, heretical, sinners, all of them. They should burn in hell.

Hedrix played an instrumental. Feliciano and Gaye both sang the words to the National Anthem. The girl that is the topic of this thread did not sing the same words...the song was totally different...not an apples to apples comparison.

I thought Straight Outta Compton was an Eazy-E record and not NWA? Anyway I do remember us blasting that in high school. We were listening to "gangsta rap" in our little town before it was cool. Really made no sense looking back since we in no way related to any thing he was talking about. :D

From Wikipedia so it must be true:
Straight Outta Compton was the first song off of N.W.A.'s second album with the same name. It was released in 1988.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_Outta_Compton_(song)
Anyway I had the tape and living near Selma, AL as a young white kid it was crazy because I went from NWA into Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix and back to Luke Skyywalker and the 2 Live Crew. Always rode the fence between east coast and west coast rap in the late 80's. Back then you could understand what they were saying and the beats were always solid.
Back on subject this woman needs to grow up and get over not feeling like a citizen or pack her S*** and go live somewhere else. Singing a flippin' song isn't going to change on single thing but will make your life a living hell.

So why is she complaining about being a black woman? 60% of hate crimes are against whites if they even call that any more. About 37% are blacks, hispanics, and other races, the other 3 % are against whites. If you're a cop and you shoot a black man pointing a gun at you, YOU go to jail. That lady has it made, she should be thanking America.

I liked Jimi Hendrix's national anthem when I heard it. It sounded really good. IMO, it's not like he shamed America, he just played it on a musical instrument like any highschool band does before a football game.

I look forward to the day black americans accept their heritage as americans and stop this constant focus on being black first, american last.

Thats a given, but this thread deals with a black issue, hence the black focus.

while the anthem has been "interpreted" in many ways when it has been performed.. the meaning was always the same.
I do believe that those negros who wish to have their own anthem should have it tho.. I also believe that they should have their own country to go along with it. Lincoln had the right idea.

This was a case of straight-up dishonesty on the singer's part. It was admittedly pre-meditated, and she kept it secret from those who mistakenly honored her by requesting she sing the USA's national anthem. It was a purely pre-calculated political statement on her part, and thus completely in-appropriate in these circumstances. I suspect if she'd asked to sing both songs ahead of time, she may have very well been granted permission. As it stands, she was deliberately being devisive and dishonest, and should apologize.

Wasn't her show. She was invited as a guest. What a dork.

The next time I'm invited to sing a national anthem at a State of the City address, I'll sing it on a wobbly vinyl record and then say I didn't mean any harm - I had merely wept on and showered with the record the day before, in a moment of patriotism.

If you were invited to give a speech about American History and you ended up talking about the black man's ongoing battle with 'the man', don't you think your audience would have grounds for disapproval?
Of course not. Because the only topic that is relevant to anybody in this country is how the blacks were and are marginalized, and how the nation, both past and present, owes them respect that they are mysteriously not getting.
Get the hell over it and move move forward, or history will get over you and leave you behind.

what specifics do you suggest that non-black americans do to remedy this?
I'll wait here.....

End affirmative action to start.
When the socialists elect Obama in a couple months, the next big step will occur naturally, as an entire chapter in the book of 'things to whine about' will be over and done with.

I wasn't being serious........but yeah...affirmative action is a discrace...as is lowering the bell curve for test scores to accommodate.

all that keeps going through my head is the ""what if"".

Taking a song and "Making it your own" is one thing.
Completely changing the words is entirely another story
The Star Spangled Banner is currently our National Anthem.
If your an invited singer. and your supposed to sing the National Anthem. Then thats that you should sing.
If your putting on your own show.
Then you sing whatever the hell you want
-
People are blowing this out of proportion.
You hire somebody to sing a song, and they sing a different one, then you don't pay them.
Next time, you hire somebody else to do it.
Doesn't matter if it's the National Anthem or Happy Birthday. The free-market corrects itself in a hurry.

I look forward to the day that ALL Americans can focus on being American first and black, hispanic, asian, white, republican, democrat...whatever.....a distant second.
I'd say its far more likely that you will see people focus on being American first and their (whatever race) second.
Then it is you will see a Republican or Democrat be American first and partymember second.
You may occasionally see it. Like the day and the day after the USA is attacked.
But within 48 hours they will always go back to being their party first and American second.
After that is "How can we spin this tragedy to make our party look good and the other party look bad?"
-
This doesn't really have anything to do with race... or with the replacement song being the national black anthem...
The crux of the deal is that she was an invited guest... asked to sing the national anthem... and instead sung whatever she wanted (regardless of which song it was... and regardless of the color of her skin).
Flakes come in all colors, not just this one black gal.

yes.. Liberia was what I had in mind.. the "black national anthem" would be perfect for there.

I thought it sucked when Steven Tyler sang, "and the home of the Indianapolis 500", even more than because he can't sing very well.
I would never invite him to sing the National Anthem again.

I agree that it has nothing to do with race but more about entitlement and narcistic behavior.
She wanted us to know how she "feels" she didn't give a crap about how the rest of us feel. she knew that she would have to be dishonest in order to get her way but it was worth it because how she "feels" is the most important thing.
simply put.. to her.. how she feels is all that matters.. honesty and morality have nothing to do with the way she comports herself when her "feelings" are involved.

I think it has everything to do with race. She's a black woman singing the black national anthem, the entitlement and narcistic behavior are a side note.
I agree with what T-mom said to an extent, but if it was a white woman singing lyrics about the advancement of white people , all hell would break loose, and the media along with al, and jesse, would have a field day ripping her apart for months and months.
I heard some black guy on the news excusing her, saying it's the same as her singing God Bless America. It's not though, God Bless America is for all Americans, and the black national anthem is for .... black people. Forget the fact that it would be pretty difficult to get God Bless America to sound right being sung to the music of the national anthem.
Someone should of cut the power to the P.A. and asked her to leave the stage.
It's over and done with now, but it seems to me that the more these types of people complain about not being equal and treated the same, the more they go out of there way to be different, and promote themselves as better than everyone else.
