WOW !!!! That sounds great !!! Can I join ? :D
-
This is a great squad filled with a bunch of really cool dudes.
Of course that Fugitive dude has got some issues, but what can ya do :D
-
Please, someone join. I am sooo sick of carrying Twinboom and Fugitive's luggage. We need a new new guy! But seriously this is a great squad to join if your looking for fun without rules and restrictions (some might call "structure"). The guys are very helpful and play the game for the right reason (fun). I joined a few weeks ago and already have accrued 3 weeks of vacation, full medical and dental, 401k, and all the planes I can wreck, which has been substantial.
-
TB and Fugitive are class acts. If you are looking to have fun...and I hope you are...this is the group for you. Good luck TB. :aok
-
you guys are rook only?
-
you guys are rook only?

I'd prefer you make this a bishop squad. You been Rook way too long.
-
I'm getting tired of rooks

OK fine, Fugitive will give a free back rub to all qualified applicants. (To be qualified, you must have a back).

The 39th FS pre-dates the 80th Headhunters, the current 475th, and the 49th squadron. I would make them the oldest P38 squadron still in existance in AH. I think they even pre-date SAPP...

There was an old wives tail that I started SAPP. In a way I did, but back then it was Sorry Ass Pukin Pilots. So it really weas a different group, but with some of the same attributes. :D

Been looking for a new squad. Been with the 22nd BG(Red Raiders) in Warbirds for the last 7 years. We have the 39th as part of our group there. Would like to to stay with the name.
Been around AH since beta but haven't been online much for awhile. Not fun being by yourself. PM me. :aok

So Odball did you scare away firbal? :(
Maybe we should have had Twinboom send the message
-
Sorry, have been busy laterly. I was on a I think Thursday evening early but didn't find anyone in the squad on.
Right now I am in the middle of building a new computer. Was working on it most of today. I will try to get on tomorrow evening.

Fugitive seemed to like then, but he is.... Should we say non-typical? Great, it looks like you have joined the 22nd Bomb Group. It's all my fault.

Some of my squadies came over awhile back and started the squad in AH. They didn't stick around. They are still stuck in WB. I gave up on WB awhile ago. The graphics were dated compare to AH. And some other things about the game. But I miss the old game there. And my squadies.
I was with the old 457th BG first in WB. Some of us came over in the begaining and set up the squad here. We lasted awhile here but they drifted off with RL stuff. Been here mostly by myself. Haven't been playing hardly at all here. A bit boring when your by yourself.
Have my new system put together. Now have to put it in the dest and hook everything up to it and patch it, and load the other stuff on it. I just might log on tonight on my other system just to added to the squad. What comms ch do you guys use?

Nah, they usually start tuning off after I begin singing "Wind beneath my wings" to Twinboom.... Only the real sicko's stick around.... And, if I am not mistaken those are the ones we want. No?
-
Just be ready for the Rabaul run in your shark mouth 38Gs when the time comes. 80th FS 38Gs and 475th 38Gs all were in the game at that point.
IF we could actually form up and look the part, it might make for a decent film and screenshot
-
<hijack> sure would be nice to have some profiles we couls add nose art to. </hijack>

That's a shark? I thought someone painted my X-wife on a plane just for me.

Hey guys, I'm still around. The new system is still in work. Started last night to move the old system over to the other desk last night. Haven't gotten the new one setup with AH yet. Busy this weekend.
Will try early next weekend to log one and hook up with the squad.
Cheers

Can a non-P38 driver take part in the festivities? I do prefer Ponies & Jugs though, oh and P-47's  :lol

I'm still stuck in New Jersey for work, and they really frown on me bringing my simpit with me, so it will be a week before I get to fly again. On the good side, it gives my son time to get all the parts in for my new comter and get it ready for me! :D
Welcome to all the new members of the squad, hope to flying with you soon ! <S>

TB, just out of curiosity, where is the 39th based out of?
Selfridge Field, Mich.
The 39th Pursuit Squadron came into being (on paper) in late 1939. In early 1940 personnel were drawn from Eddie Rickenbacher's old "Hat in the Ring" 94th Pursuit Squadron of WW I fame and flight training started with Seversky P-35 "pursuit" planes. In early 1941 the 39th Squadron was chosen to receive the first Bell P-39 Airacobras rolling off of the assembly lines. By midsummer a Bell Company artist had designed and painted an attractive "Cobra in the Clouds" logo, which, with considerable difficulty, was passed through the Office Of Heraldry. With that bit of legislation the 39th Squadron had officially become "The Cobra Squadron".
With the Japanese Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941, the squadron was on its way to the West Coast and quickly across the Pacific to Brisbane, Australia. Reassembling their P-39s, the squadron was soon in the air over Port Moresby, New Guinea in defense of Northern Australia. After two and a half months of combat the 39th had lost several planes to the Japanese Zeros, but never a pilot.
At the end of July 1942 the squadron was sent back to Australia to be equipped with Lockheed's P-38 Lightning, becoming the first "Lightning" squadron in the Southwest Pacific. By October '42 the 39th was back in action over New Guinea soil and the Zeros began to fall. Early in 1943 the 39th again distinguished itself in becoming the first American squadron to rack up 100 kills. Unit pride and esprit de corps was running very high when the squadron adopted the "sharks teeth" motif for their P-38s. As a fresh faced young 2nd Lieutenant, Richard Ira Bong started his combat career while on TDY with the squadron. Learning quickly from the experienced 39th Squadron pilots, Dick Bong became an ace before moving back to his assigned squadron.
Through the balance of WW II the 39th put the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt and the North American P-51 Mustang to good use. The Occupation of Japan was carried out with the Mustangs. With the start of the Korea War, the 39th was there early on with their F-51 Mustangs. There came a relatively short period of time when Lockheed F-80 Shooting Stars where used to face North Korea and China, but their short range necessitated a return to the trusty old Mustangs. In mid summer 1952 the squadron made the transition to the North American F-86 Sabre. Through the Korea War the 39th produced numerous Aces. One of them, Joe McConnell with 16 Migs to his credit, was the top ace of that war.
My history of the 39th Squadron after Korea is sketchy, but it is known that the 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was active in Viet Nam with F-105 Thunderchiefs. Again in 1990 the 39th was activated at George Air Force Base, Mojave, California as a Flight Training Squadron and readied a squadron for the Desert Shield/Desert Storm operation over Iraq. The resulting fully trained squadron with its F-4G "Wild Weasel" electronic counter measures planes was given the title 561st Tactical Fighter Squadron and sent to Saudi, Arabia. On 17 January 1991 they engaged in the initial attack and flew 1,146 sorties in 42 days.
Again the 39th was deactivated and then once more activated in 1993 at Eglin AFB, Florida with the title 39th Flight Test Squadron. Since that time they have been testing, among other things, the high speed and extreme maneuver release of rockets and other arms. Happily, the "Cobra in the Clouds" logo has been retained through the years with but slight change. After 60 years it seems that the same unit pride and esprit de corps still pervades the squadron.

Today only, if you join we will also include the best selling cd "The best of Odbal on Vox". Including such hits as "Wind beneath my wings" as sang to Twinboom. "My heart will go on (Theme from Titanic)" As sang to Fugitive. And "I believe I can fly" as sang on SAPP nights. And, as a very limited offer the first 5 new squaddies will also get their own set of Sham-Wow's monogrammed with Odbal's thoughts for the day. Helpful hints such as "Dont fry bacon naked", "Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?", and "All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my hand."
Dont be left out!
-
Okay... that tears it. :uhoh
Here I was all ready to come back and say "Wewt P-38's FTW!" and you had t'spoil the moment by remindning me of TB's singing skillz in flight.

I thought I made that clear, all songs are sung by the amazing Odbal!!! Please send in your join requests and be patient! With an offer like this is could take weeks to sift through all the applicants.

The 'official' line is: Shortly after the restructure, RL caught up with me and I had to drop the game for a bit. Then the members just quit showing except for Branch because of their RL issues.
Thus endeth the 49th FG brief, meteoric life. May she rest in piece...

Join the oldest 38 squad in aces high
I believe the 479th are the oldest continuously operated P38 squadron in AH. The oldest P38 squad is the 475th (the current group is the 4th or 5th to carry that name).
The 39th are a great group, regardless.
-
Seems to me the 80th is the most consistantly 38 flying crew and has certainly been around as long as those 39th dweebs! :)
Mustangs and Jugs. For shame TB, for shame! :)
39th are a good bunch of folks.

I think he meant to say "join the squad that represents the oldest P38 squad in Aces High" Wasn't the 39th the first squad to be moved into the 38 as a combat active squad?

The squad has been active in Aces High for a couple of years. We are pretty low on numbers right now... thats why the boss is looking for a few more to join up :D

Yep that is correct, the 39th FS was the first squadron to receive the P-38 in the 5th AF. The other squadrons in the group had to soldier on with their P-39's before re-equipping with the P-47 later in the war.

The following is a story found in "New Guinea Skies" written by Wayne Rothgeb, a 39th FS pilot. The 39th had just lost it's P-38's and had been reequipped with the P-47 and not everyone was happy about it to say the least.
Willam Mettle from Akron, Ohio, had a dry sense of humor. He too had no fat to spare and was about an inch taller than Aycock. Mettler, a P-38 lover, hated the P-47 with a burning vengeance. One time when Bill was OD (officer of the day), he demonstrated his dislike.
For twenty four hours the OD performed routine daily duties for the commanding officer. He wore a black band lettered OD on his left arm, wore side arms, had a jeep and a driver at his disposal, inspected camp, ate at the enlisted men's mess, acted important, and stayed awake all night. His most challenging duty was an after-midnght inspection of the guards posted at each plane.
At night, guarding a plane parked in a remote jungle was a lonely and spooky job. These outlying revetments because a playground for the jungle's crawly things. They jumped, slithered, and hopped. If the invading critters didn't unnerve you, the screeches and cries coming the the nighttime jungle world would. There were other disturbing sounds. During the day the plane's metal, heated by the scorching tropical sun expanded. At night it cooled and shrank. The plane, with no one near, crunched and thumped.
Our guards were air corps men. Most of them had joined the air corps to escape infantry duties - now there in New Guinea holding a rifle and guarding airplanes. They were unhappy, scared, not adept at handling a carbine, and ready to shoot at anything that moved. Guard inspection by the OD was dangerous.
For an inspection, there was a prescribed routine to follow: the OD approached the guard, the guard challenged the OD, they then exchanged the nights passwords. After they had successfully identified each other, the OD often had a chat with the lonely air corps guard to relieve the tension. On this particular night, Mettle went through the formal exchange and then he had an urge. Bill was a man of action. He walked up to the guard and with a straight face said. "Soldier, do you now what you are supposed to do if the enemy comes out of this jungle and tries to steal one of these 47's?"
Standing with his rifle at the attention position, the guard blinked, his Adam's apple went up and down a couple times, and he cleared his throat.
Before he could answer Mettler continued, "Soldier, I'll tell you what you are supposed to do. Help him up there into that cockpit, and if he can't get it started, show him how." Bill looked up at the detested plane. "on this one it takes an extra shot of prime. Well, young man, after he gets it started, you guide him as he taxis down to the end of the runway. Get him lined up good. Give plenty of warm-up time. We want him to get back to Tokyo. When we are sure he can make it, drop your hand, and start him on his way. When his takeoff has cleared the end of the runway and he is airborne, your duty is done. Do you understand?"
There was a weak, "Yes, sir"
Mettler threw him a snappy salute, did a toe-at-the-heel, official about-face , and with a wry smile on his face walked back to the jeep.
