Title: Fuel leaks?
Post by: angelsandair on July 04, 2008, 08:07:23 AM
I was reading another thread about fuel leaks and I remembered reading about quite alot of planes with self-sealing fuel tanks. IIRC the FM-2/F4F, F4U, F6F P-51, I'm assuming almost all of the American fighters had it. So could our fuel tanks seal after we're hit after a pre-detirmined amount of time?

I don't think you have the correct list of those that had self-sealing tanks ... I do know the P-47 did have them.

Self-sealing tanks ... in this game ... most likely do work as intended, but you will never know it ... it just happens under the right circumstances.

Also, self-sealing tanks does not mean that you will never have a fuel leak. Get enough hits, in the same place, and the hole produced would be much to big to self-seal.

Yes I know, but it would be nice to know.

I bet we do, we just dont know. (could be why the A6M is such great kindling!)

True, a 12.3mm round could easily make a fuel leak whether you have self sealing or not.

It was such great kindling because it was a kite filled with gasoline.  :D

The Zero didn't get self-sealing tanks until the A6M5c(took them till 44' to figure out they need those...) but the A6M5b was supposed to have automatic fire-extinguishers although I have no idea how those work or if there modeled in the game.

I think I saw that thing in the Military channel's Showdown Aircombat.

Where you shoot C02 into your fuel tank so you dont explode.
