I thought you guys in Britian are the Red Coats and the French are the Turn Coats? :lol
-
No hard feelings. ;) :D :aok
One of my favorite quotes (which I am likely butchering) is: "The British and the Americans are one people separated only by a common language. "

IIRC, Gen. Patton was the man to speak that line.
-
Historical point here...
The British officers wore red coats so that of they were injured in battle the blood wouldn't be apparent and instill fear in their men...
The French thought that was a grand idea and immediately instituted brown pants....
Happy 4th!

In 1814 we took a little trip,
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississipp'
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
And we met the bloody British near the town of New Orleans.
Chorus:
We fired our guns and the British kept a comin'.
There wasn't nigh as many as they was a while ago.
We fired once more and they begin to runnin',
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We looked down the river and we see'd the British come...
There must have been a hundred of 'em beatin' on the drum.
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring;
While we stood beside our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.
Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise.
If we didn't fire a musket till we looked 'em in the eyes.
We held our fire till we see'd their faces well;
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave 'em--Well.
Chorus
They ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles,
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em 'em,
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down,
So we grabbed an alligator and we poured an other round.
We put the ball between his teeth and powdered his behind,
And when we touched the powder off the 'gator lost his mind.
Chorus
They ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles,
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em,
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks for the wishes on our national holiday.
A HUGE :salute to LYNX, who if were in charge of a few regiments 232 years ago...that little temper tantrum called the American Reveloution would certainly had lasted far longer.
I salute all of our UK cousins!
While we might have had a tedious beginning, Britain has been a staunch and loyal ally through thick and thin in many tough times since 1917.
My father-in law was the last trench in Normandy on the American extreme left (1st Army "Bloody Red One"), and the next foxhole over began the British lines. He was Canadian born, but serving in the US Army. Many a time he remembers being in a tough post D-Day scrap with British troops aiding American troops and vice versa. A HUGE :salute to those men who fought (under different colors) but almost side-by side.
Most folks don't know it, but many UK families took in US servicemen prior to D-DAY as hosts. Maybe those families need to be honored & remembered as well. :salute
Sorry about that temper tantrum, and thank you, our UK cousins.

The titel is "The Red Coats are Coming". Reminded me of this song.

For as much as we Americans bag on the French at times (freedom fries anyone?), they sure saved our bacon back in the American Revolution.
Happy 4th, and thanks France.
-
My Grandparents looked after a whole bunch of American servicemen during the war, mostly tank crews in the months leading up to Normandy. My old man tells a story of being late for school, unable to cross the street for an hour due to the column of American tanks/armoured vehicles.

It's 232 years and 1 day since your Independence. I trust you all enjoyed the holiday but none the less I am left wondering "what if".
What if we (Brits) had beat down the rebellion. The leaders would have stud trial for treason especially as Britian was at war with the French (again...they have to be soo controversial lol) and not forgetting the Dutch. A kin to several American business men siding with Binladen.
As was the practice of the time. There bodies or heads would have been tard and hung or spiked on public display as a nice little reminder for years to come.
Britain may have been a stronger world force for the short term but with everything else going on in the world I think the former empire would have collapsed sooner. So much to govern with so few to do it.
America wouldn't be so great today had we kept a hold of it. Stiffled of European immigrant. The native Americans wouldn't have fared any better. Scalping being a British invention. Texas & California would probable still be Mexican or French and maybe even some other states.
I'd like to think Britain would have done alright for keeping America. Maybe even done better for the world but in reality it (Britain) wouldn't have matured as it has. World power in so few hands is bound to be disruptive. Maybe those 2 world wars wouldn't even have started but then again maybe the British Empire would still be at war with the rest of the world.
Oh well....who knows. You done alright for yourselves and you done alright by us since. At least you inherited our colours.....red white and blue :salute

Forgot the part where the war had been over for a month prior to the battle.

Yep. If it weren't for France, we probably would have lost.
Also, France, thank you for the gift of what is still the main symbol of our country: The Statue of Liberty.
(With regard to France in battle, there were times of large conquests, such as under Charlemagne and Napoleon.)
It is good now to have the UK and France as good friends.

IMO Convicts were in reality just slave labour to build a new colony and to keep out the French (again).

We don't 'belong' to anyone who would have the authority to 'give us back.' And I don't reckon anyone would try that anyhow. :)
