Title: Do you think the government is holding out on you?
Post by: Sincraft on July 04, 2008, 10:23:20 AM
I was talking to a girl the other day about the presidential election and the candidates.
She was talking about our current president, the war - the economy, etc.

She immediately said "I can't wait until that dictator leaves and Obama wins, then we can finally relax"

I asked her what did she mean?

She honestly believes:  he will LOWER gas prices and has control of this, he will give us all much more money, and has control of this and people will all get along better.

I couldn't believe my ears.  So I asked her.  Do you think the government can print money and hand it out to us?
Her answer (for someone with a master's degree and working as a manager at a major corporation) was ABSOLUTELY shocking to me.

She said YES - the government has the ability to create more money and lower gas prices but they don't because they want all their greedy politicians and friends to get it all.

I couldn't believe my ears.

She had NO concept that the governments money was OUR money, money SHE paid into and that most of that money she paid into, she will never see.  I tried to explain this to her, but she just didn't understand it.

So my question to everyone is:  Do you think the government prints money and is the 'world bank'?  I have a feeling that the answer is going to be NO on these forums whereas most in here are intelligent.  However, I ask that you ask people this same question and post your responses in here.  I'm shocked that this is what is moving our country now days.  People like this that believe the government is a limitless entity that holds all the cards.

Sigh....what are we becoming..

EDIT: BTW I mentioned to her that the last two times we tried to force the oil countries to lower the prices , it backfired IE recently with the democrats threatening tariffs on products and in the 70's with the handsomehunk peanut farmer.  She of course, didn't hear about this on ABC.

She has a master's degree, works in management, and hasn't had any courses in economics?

You're assuming that just because a person supposedly has an education, they know what to do with it. I know a bunch of people who have all sorts of degrees, and are incapable of operating in the real world. Education and intelligence do not go hand in hand.

Pearl of wisdom from my father . . .

We were discussing something I had "learned" at university.  For the life of me, I can't remember exactly what.

My dad asked where I had heard such BS.  I said a professor's name.

"Guy sounds like an idiot."

"Dad, he has like three different doctorate degrees, one of them from Harvard."

"So, that makes him an educated idiot."

No, but a majority of the time, one sure tends to lead to the other  :aok

Just because a person has a degree does not mean they learned anything. They may also have done what my wife and I both observed at a major state university. Folks paying other folks to attend classes for them and take the tests for a better than average passing score. The person doing the paying didn't attend the classes, just paid for another person to do the work so they could party.

I have a theory I keep seeing proved right all the time.

There seems to be a trade off

The higher the education level. the lower the level of common sence.

Its like one erodes the other.

That would also help to explain Engineers and Architects.

Do you guys remember 1999 when the big Y2K scare happened?

We have more paper money out now, and still don't have enough of what it's representive of.

Our paper money is an   I. O. U.   $x amount in gold.

The worry was, and still is that people would/will start cashing in, and there isn't enough to go around, which would cause a major collapse of our economic system.

I'm not an economist, just your average joe sixpack, so what do i know.

Actually, our money is no longer a Gold Note.  It is Legal Tender.  The only thing backing it is the Federal Reserves word that it is worth something. :huh

you can't "cash in money", you can trade it for other stuff like beer, gas, fireworks, hotdogs.

True enough, but these are basic economic principles that she seems unaware of. These are the things you would expect a corporate professional to be somewhat familiar with.

You'd be amazed what corporate professionals are commonly not aware of. I know I have been, many times. I'm amazed some corporations are still in business.

Amen!

Kind of along the lines of economics: My ex-wife and I were talking about ATM fees. She said the government should stop them. Now I'm no big fan of those fees. I said why aren't they charging $10 per transaction instead of $2? That's because then no one will use them. So people have a choice to make here. They can use them or not. That is the one time in our marriage she agreed with me.

The woman who initiated all of this must feel powerless to turn everything over to the Government.

Yes. The government prints money, specifically the Treasury department.

The world bank is not the government, although it is owned by several governments and the US has the largest voting share.

Amercan money is printed by the Federal Reserve, which is not a part of the US government, we have been off the gold standard for many years now, tho there is some gold in reserve it wouldn't cover a fraction of the amount of US currency.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-515319560256183936  this is very eye openning, a little off the deep end at times, but factual just the same, you'd have to watch the entire film and make your own conclusions.

Actually Amercan money is printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Coinage by the Mint, both under the Department of the Treasury.

The Federal Reserve is a Governmental corporation, much as the Postal Service.

The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is a federal government agency.

The Chainman and Vice Chairman of the Fed need to be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

The Chairman of Exxon/Mobil does not.

one of my ex's new latest husband is a retired engineer with lots of education and very active in the community and is making about 80k just on his retirement.. he also got medical for life.

He is voting for osamba because he told me that osambama said that anyone who makes less than 100k a year will pay NO federal taxes... NONE.. NADA...  he believes this.

He also says that osama will make the oil companies lower the gas prices by taking away the "obscene" salaries of their CEO's

Yes..  Stupid American goes to every level of socio economic strata... at least here in kalifornia.

All this was after I asked him to name even one thing he thinks osamabama will do for us.
