Title: Bermuda is currently under attack by the Portugese
Post by: Curval on July 06, 2008, 08:13:05 PM
Man-o-wars no less!

http://www.royalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?sectionId=60&articleId=7d8722f30030009

I was at the beach today and five or six washed up and were being thrashed around in the surf right where I was swimming with my daughter.

I saw another three or four further out that looked bigger than them too.

As the day progressed they seemed to go away though...

Funny story kind of:

I went to take out an ocean kayak with my 4 year old daughter.  Strapped on her life jacket and then pulled the boat out past where the waves were breaking (or so I thought) and then jumped on.

I swung the kayak around to face the waves and head away from the beach only to find myself face to face with what looked like a darn tsunami wave.  It raised the front of the boat so far my daughter went flying...backwards...right where the wave broke on the beach.

All I saw was head...then a foot....then one arm...two feet...another arm....etc etc.

She was thrown around like a bit of a rag doll.  Sand was caked in her hair in huge clumps.  She stood up and choked a bit and then started to cry.

I grabbed her and took her into the deeper water and just tried to calm her down while trying to rinse her hair.  Eventually tears turned to sniffles and I was able to put her down and give her brother a go...which we did.

Sam, who had seen Casey's little adventure wanted nothing more to do with the kayak but when I got back to the beach there was Casey with her lifejacket back on and wanting to try again.  It was just too rough for her though she eventually chickened out, but she made me promise we'd do it another time when the water is a bit calmer.

I know the ad didn't say no Portuguese but... no Portuguese.

Thought you were going to say your daughter landed on one or something.  Glad it was just a head full of sand.  :)

From the first paragraph of the article:

The Parks Department has warned beach-goers to watch out for Portuguese man-o-war after 80 were removed from Horseshoe beach this week.

Ahhh..okay.

Sorry, don't watch that show...or much of any TV to be honest.

It's ok, you have 3 sources of entertainment that are probably way better.  :)

Last weekend I went boating with my Sister and her family. They bought a new "Stingray" watertoy. My 7year-old niece was riding about 15- 20mph and let go of one handle right as they hit a big wave. It flipped her off sideways and she did 3 complete cartwheels becore crashing.

She was screaming bloody murder and I was sure she had no less than a broken arm or leg. We quickly got her onboard and she proceeded to punch her dad (the driver) in the gut as hard as she could.

10 minutes later she was riding again. :)

I've been stung  more than once by Man-o-wars while either living in, or visiting Florida.  Never even saw them (or their near invisible tenacles in the ocean surf) other than washed up on shore.

Curval, your daughter sounds like my youngest, alittle shy about doing something after some minor trauma, but willing to "get back on the horse and ride again". :)

My older sister was stung by a man-o-war as she played on the beach at horseshoe bay when we lived there.  That was 42 years ago.

Really?

Hurts huh?  I'll bet she hollered.

I like the way the article glances over the second best alternative for treating the stings.  Best option is meat tenderizer or some sort of *basic* solution...watered down clorox would be good too.  If none of that is available...have someone pee on you.

Not joking.

If you get those tentacles wrapped around you and the pain is flowing freely I promise you that ALL of you would be begging for someone to pee on you if you knew it would decrease the pain almost instantly.

She's the gung-ho one, which is why she was going on the kayak first, but yea...if some trauma is involved she holds back but eventually gets back on the horse.

Not Sam though...the middle child.  He *sees* the trauma and he is done.  My oldest was pretty brave to do the ride despite seeing Casey's little trouble.  Unlike him, but I guess he figured he's bigger and can swim much better than her.

No pain is needed for AWMac to ask someone to pee on that old fart! :D :devil

Sort of a misconception.  You only use meat tenderizer / urine IF (and only if) you still have a tentacle on you.  Otherwise, the best cure is to take a handful of wet sand and just go to town on the sting.

I saw some little boys playfully popping the pretty blue balloons washed up in the weed on the beach by stomping them with their bare feet.  I gave them a short lecture in marine biology before they encountered any tentacles.  I don't think they really appreciated me interfering  :lol  pain is a better teacher.

I don't know what the man o war tenticles feel like when they are intact...  I think I've encountered bits and pieces of them tho.  I did have a bad encounter with those pink moon jellyfish that come through the FL Keys  in huge numbers in the fall.  It is a bananza for the sea turtles who eat those things like candy. I got stung all over - face, arms, legs, torso,  by the moon jellys before I could clamber back into my boat.  Obviously, they aren't as bad as man o wars.

I suppose my jellyfish fight stories would somehow be interpretted as trolling on this highly sensitive board so I'll keep them to myself.

Jellyfish can't sting you on the bottom of your feet, and the palms of your hands.

Thanks Rox, it's appreciated.

If you feel like some reading about hurricanes on this board give this a read, from when hurricane Fabian hit us head on in 2003:

A blast from the past.  ;)

Bertha appears to be turning east and away from us.  My biggest concern is that it might interfere with a golf game I have planned for Saturday with some business associates.  Either way, not to worry...I'll be fine.
