Lately I've been involved in a lot of gangbangs. They are hella fun as long as it's no more than 3 planes.
I have found a few planes that are easier to survive for me in a gang bang. Two off of the top of my head are the p38J or the Hurri C. The 38 can get slow and still perform well in the vertical. The Hurri C, which is my favorite, has amazing guns and can turn on a dime. My favorite manuever in a hurri C is forcing the overshoot and getting the 'bandit' as he/she climbs up to perch.
Anyways.....Tell me what planes you guys prefer to get gangbanged in?

I'll fly into a disaster in a A6M and survive long enough to kill a few people before i turn into Halley's Comet. Besides that F4U-1A or F6F-5 as long as i have some speed to work with.

I fly for whichever team has the lowest numbers. Getting ganged is normal for me( I put myself there, it's my fault). I fly the D stang which isn't really good at much.Ya it's pretty fast but several are as fast or faster. Other than speed and views, the pony is very average and not a good plane to fight the hordes in. Naturally, I die a lot. :aok

Nothing better to get mugged in then the 38G. Lots of ammo and can hang in there low and slow for a while.

P38J with 100% fuel. Getting just one while being ganged is an awesome feeling.

Never understood those comments. If you can't win a fight in the L, what makes you think you'll win one in the J? Whatever you can do in the J, you can do in the L and expect the same results.
I'm not saying it's the case with you but I know a lot of the more experienced P-38 drivers fly the J, so other players will assume that the J is the uber of the 3 P-38s and gravitate towards the J. Once they get experience they'll realize that there is no real performance difference between the J and the L in this game other than the L tends to fly more crisply and is more responsive in control over the J. YMMV.

I prefer the A6m5 but it can turn it into a flame show quick. The Hurri can turn very well too but I have been able to stay alive the longest in a F6F. It can soak up quite the punishment and still RTB. :lol

A6M is fun that way. I've done this a few times: Take them to the deck, drop flaps and slow to a crawl while jinking to avoid bad hits, some persuers will slow to try to aviod an overshoot. Then when you finally get it slowed down to about 90, lay 'er over in a hard turn. They get fixated and try to turn with you and tipstall. Listen for the explosions under you and start racking up the proxies. :D Its the ones that are smart enough to blast by you and climb for another go that will get you but you can usually take some suckers with you. ;)

for me i can feel a small difference in the J and the L. What i used to like was the dive flap on the L to sustain a dive after runners. Personally It's just kind of a comfort thing. IDK what it is really :lol

I like the L better because of the dive flaps. The J feels very suspect in a dive without them.

I know its considered an uber plane but its great for getting ganged, my vote is the n1k2-j :D

Sixteen. What else? I get myself in all kinds of trouble in the Spit XVI.
4+ cons is where you start getting ganged. Before that it's just a challenge.

P-51D. It is suprisingly maneuverable with the stall limiter off. I can usually bring them in a reverse with it. And if things get too hectic and I absolutely have to, I can run. I think I got a great vid of me in my P-51 getting ganged by a P-51D and a P-51B. I kilt one of em really quick and the other ran. :lol

It can take a few hits and still stay in the fight, is a small target to start with that can be made even smaller, if you can force an overshoot and quick enough to catch them at close range you can make them pay for their mistake with a single hit from the 37mm which is most rewarding even if you only tag one of em. :t
Of course once it gets too slow to maneuver and unable to regain sufficient energy you just become a very easy target.
Though it never ceases to amaze me that when you already have three attacking you that a fourth,fifth,sixth seem to find it necessary to join in as well at times. When that happens I generally take it as a credit to my ability rather then theirs and I always try and bag one of them. :D
Of course if I was to try the gang attack in Easy Mode by far the plane of choice would be an La7, C-Hog or Dweeb16.

The P38, its a huge bird that is difficult to make dance in a gang fest but I would fly none other.

One versus many is often the only fun fight available in the MA as so many players fly so timid/smart (delete to taste). Its fun to watch the mentality of opponents switch from fear to greed as they gain a numbers edge. This can sometimes be their undoing.... :t
The F6F-5 is a great plane in this sort of fight. It is heavy but has the most wing area of any single engined fighter, plus great flaps. It can crank its nose round surprisingly quickly and is often underestimated by Spits and other turnfighters.
As others have said the trick in this sort of fight is to force overshoots. The flaps and excellent rudder slow the Hellcat up quickly and it can maintain control at very low speeds where other fighters are spinning out. You can often sucker one or two guys into a scissors fight while avoiding the faster opponents.
You need to take any deflection shot you get when outnumbered, a straight six shot makes you too much of a target. Luckily the Hellcat has a great view over the nose if you raise the seat position and very accurate guns with lots of ammo.
You are likely to take damage in this sort of fight but the Hellcat is tough enough to absorb a lot of punishment.

Yeah, I've started flying into 3+ enemy con situations just so I can see if I can fight my way out and win.
My preferred ride for this sort of mischief is the Bf 109 K4. It's rocket climb and 'hang-on-its-prop' ability combined with a good set of flaps gives you a fighting chance of evading one con while lining up a shot on a second.
Worst case scenario, the speed and climb gives it the ability to escape should you find yourself in an impossible position so you can split the pack up and pick them off 1 by 1 if necessary.

I fly the J for the better skins IMO. The naked one with the blue striping across is awesome.

the other night i had no less than 20, trying to kill me. at least 7 were shooting at one time.
if there is less than 4 its not a gang, sometimes even that isn't all that hard to over come, it depends on who is in the "GANG"

I always get ganged in a 109g2/g6 - prefer to get ganged in a 109k4 so I can use my engine power to get me out of it.

Right there with you Steve, I fly the 51 or the P-40. I think theres a target on both planes that only that other countries can see. As of late the 51 and the 40 have been Niki magnets. :confused: :cry

Spit 16 for off the runway and ready to fight. The last plane i would be in is a 38. To this day a 38 is just a big target to me unless you have alt and E.

Hell, I don't ever consider 3 on 1 a real gang-bang.(I don't consider cons in a fight if they aren't attacking me actively, with equal or better E; these experiences were all within D-2k, and heading at me guns hot, unless I put them off angle)
Well I've I won 1 on 7 in an la7 ... speed was kept relatively high, started at like 7k, killed 6... sent a tempest running hurt.
But then I've been low on the deck many times, with 5-6 cons close on me in a p47, and blasted em all in the end. There are less options there though, so the victory was harder won than with the la7.
Or I've handled similar swarms in a spit, but you can move a spit in ways that can force the fight to be 2-3 on you at once...instead of 4-5, due to it's maneuverability.
Well my end point is, if you know how to fly, you probably have a favorite, in a particular style. I consider these three planes some of the best all around for their style. I'd mention the F4u and 109, but both aren't such great swarm killers IMHO, but against more reasonable odds, they are phenomenal.
All things being equal. Spit is the best pure defensive plane I think, but that is not all that matters, even with a horde on you. So I can't limit it to one plane honestly.
The question for me is... do I want to out-think them, or out-fly them? Not that they are mutually exclusive. For instance, in the la7 fight I recalled that I used what I assumed would be an expectation of an la7 to run, against the horde. I'd set angles that made it look like I was trying to extend out of the fight, right before a quick overshoot maneuver. You can imagine the surprise. In the end though, the la7 is my least favorite choice. It can work well though.
Complex question "favorite". I'd venture to say most experienced folks don't have a single favorite, but many.

I seem to survive very long in a gangband(3v1) in the F6F, mainly because people do not realize how good of a turner the f6f is w/ its flaps
the f6f is always underestimated and thats why its the only fighter i can consistantly get kills in :D
