Title: Do you play for Score or for Fun
Post by: captain1ma on July 09, 2008, 02:44:48 PM
This should be interesting. i play for fun. i could care less if i get shot down. they give me a shiny new plane when it happens. If we decide to attack a base while im in the air, i think nothing of ejecting. just my version of fun.

besides, i cant play to save my life so i get shot down most of the time anyway. making it back to the runway is not a priority. thats why i never run. i always fight and either win or die.

I thought the main reason to play a game was for the fun, at least that's how I approach any game I play.  To each his own I guess.

Pfft.   You act like this is a game?   You should see my WWII flight suit I use when flying.   This is FAR FROM a game.

You should see my flying helmet.  Found a surplus WWII USAAF flying helmet on eBay, removed the ear muffs and put in the headphone speakers and boom mike I had laying around.  Of course, I only wear it when my girlfriend isn't around, otherwise i'd never hear the game sounds over her laughter.  My next project is to replace the boom mic with a throat mic and getting a white scarf.

not necessarily. You can do play with an eye on score and still have fun. If you get fixated on rank, things may go downhill though...

dont care about my score...........never look at my score...........it's ALL about fun.... told myself I'd review my thinking after the first year here.........and honestly........I don't see that changing.  I would not do half the things I do if I cared about my score...

score is one of those things that some play for and others could care less.  many who love scores and rank have a hard time believing others don't care at all.  Those who don't like rank and scores have a hard time understanding the appeal.  some believe it is a form of bragging rights and i've heard when your out for a night on the town (score permitting) you can sweet talk the ladies.

In AH, for me, I just like to get home, open up a cold beer, sit down and fly a few sorties with my squad.  look for some stuff to shoot, maybe have a few laughs, and thats it:)

I play for fun. I like to grab a fast plane and circle above an enemy field watching them desperately trying to climb to shoot at me. Then I run when they get co-alt denying them the chance to fight. I find that funny as hell.

If I cared about score, I might actually go down and shoot at them.

Title: Re: Do you play for Score or for Fun
Post by: BnZ on July 09, 2008, 07:37:14 PM
Well, I don't play for score, since having a high score would require time, focus, and doing things I don't feel like doing. I only do that if I'm getting paid, and I'm not going to work all THAT hard even then.

I don't play for fun, since flying around in the AHII MA, trying to maintain the concentration nessecary to watch your back at all times, while trying to maneuever an aircraft around, avoid getting shot in the face, avoid gangbangs, and occasionally hit something, is about as not-fun as you can get this side of the dentist's chair.

I guess I play because I like animals too much to shoot them (except wild hogs! ugly destructive fiends! Like politicians, but with cleaner sexual habits), and shooting people leads to prison terms (Even politicians, unfortunately). So I shoot cartoon airplanes. If I can bring just a little dis-pleasure into someone's life by whacking their cartoon airplane, that gives me a warm inner glow.

Of course, the worst part is that occasionally, when a bandit INSISTS on being difficult and forces me to THINK and tries to wriggle off the hook before I shoot them (most annoying!), giving me much difficulty, the pervs almost act like they enjoy it. Whaddya mean "Salute"? Why the heck did I go to the trouble if they're just going to think I'm a jolly good fellow for blowing their pixel-plane out of the sky? Most vexing.

Post by: Helius on July 09, 2008, 07:44:17 PM
I play for the thrill that you get right when those rounds tear the wing off an enemy and that inner satisfaction as he tries in vain to regain control of his aircraft.  Forget it, little friend, it's over.  That and the hidden treasure!
Title: Re: Do you play for Score or for Fun
Post by: toonces3 on July 09, 2008, 07:53:43 PM
I try to shoot down as many bad guys, while protecting my K/D.

Usually I start doing really well in either fighter or attack in a given tour.  Once one starts looking good, I fly the other for 'fun' and the good one as 'all business'.

I don't go furballing in my good K/D score option.

My favorite times are when I've been sorta buzzed on a Friday night, flying without giving a crap about my score, but I always have player's regret the next morning...see my sig.

I like to see how high a rank I can get without undue effort. I know i'll never top-20, I have no patience or skill for it.. (stupid fighter rank)

I do like to watch my K/D ratios tho, just to gauge my efficacy.

I lately just hang around 100 overall rank, doing what i do.

So, I do play for score, I guess, but unfortunately one of my funnest drinking activities as of late is shooting at cv's with shorebats, and 5" gunning from cv's, both of which dont count for any score. So i guess i don't care about score.

I set a different goal for myself every tour. The squad I'm in has ribbons and metals you can earn for different achievements. Some of them are based on fighter and attack scores, others are not. It's fun for me because it's like playing a game within a game.
I just try to kill what needs to be killed, bomb what needs to be bombed, and capture what needs to be captured. Overall game score don't mean a whole lot to me anymore. :salute

Do you play for score or fun.

Fun, primarily.  I do usually try and see how high I can get my K/D at the beginning of a tour before being shot down.

You know what I love?

How everyone on this forum:
1.  changes country to the one with the lowest numbers
2.  always lifts from the field with the smallest green darbar and largest red darbar
3.  never runs from fights
4.  rarely HO's
5.  and finally, doesn't care about score and only flies to have fun

Funny, this runs quite contradictory to my experiences in the MA.

These threads are quite amusing in their own way.   :aok

The only person I've ever personally seen, that I absolutely know for sure is flying purely for fun and no other reason, is Guppy/CorkyJr.  Nobody but nobody seems to enjoy the simple pleasure of upping a virtual plane for no other purpose than to see what kind of trouble he/she can get into.

I'm not saying other folks don't fly like this, but in my experiences nobody exemplifies the 'just play for fun' statement like him.

He's a tyrant.  You haven't seen him in our S.A.P.P meetings.  You should hear how he yells and berates us for not doing our jobs properly.  Do you know why Mensa has a lazy eye?  CorkyJr slapped him around one night, knocked that eye kilter for not hitting the VH with torpedos like he was ordered to.  I virtually wet my pants everytime Corky says my name and have a nervous tick from the last beating he gave me when I didn't join on a 25v1 against a lone C-47.  How do you think Shuffler got his handle?  It's because Corky caned him in the shins one night for not making the Top #5, poor guy has shuffled ever since.  We'd all leave but we're scared of him, even our Grand Exhalted Ruler treds lightly around Corky.  Play for fun?  The only fun he has is when he beats us.

In other news, perusing this thread off and on over the last couple days one thing has become apparent to me, I think the wrong question was asked.  To me the obvious answer is that everyone plays for fun, the real question is how do you define fun within the context of AH.  There's teh crux of the discussion, furballers would jump in and say something about they have fun playing cartoon fighter pilots till a lousy timid cherry picker, alt monkey, armchair general comes along and burns their fighter hangars to the ground.  The strat guys would counter by saying the point of the game is to coordinate and play as a team and the furballing is a waste of country resources, it's "mindless"  and all the furballers should just leave because they're getting in the way of the "real objective".

Awhile back Field Marshal Dan/Corky/Guppy in a rare moment of lucidity had some interesting ideas on changing the base layout and tweaking the MA style of gameplay that would encourage both parts of the game.  Trying to bring together the two opposing gameplay styles is a more interesting discussion IMHO (although we know how little that matters). :)

besides, i cant play to save my life so i get shot down most of the time anyway. making it back to the runway is not a priority. that's why i never run. i always fight and either win or die.

If everyone would play like that, there would still Be a lot of people playing AH.that's how it was a while back, but now they all just run away from you.

You know I hear this alot, but honestly, I suspect it is a "Golden Age" myth. Kind of
like all those Arthurian tales about chivalrous Knight-Errants questing about and besting Black Knights who harass fair damsels and bridge-crossers for no apparent reason. While in reality, a Knight was a landlord most of the time and a sort of primitive tank for shock and awe against ranks of untutored peasant conscripts in times of war.  Those times of war when he couldn't wriggle out of having to go, at any rate.

Yes, it was during the Golden Age and not a myth.  Unfortunately, the Golden Age died when that retard idea of the Aces High Championship Shootout contest was announced.  Since then fun took a back seat to timid flying and score potatos.  Too bad you weren't around back then, you may have a different outlook to the game.

*shrug* Okay. Human nature is what it is. I've heard stuff about Air Warrior that kind of belies the notion that the MA used to be a sort of DA, but I wasn't there back then.

I've never seen the time in AHII when trying to look for a fair duel in the MA wasn't a good way to pick up an interloper or three, so I fly accordingly.

I rather meant the DA outside of the "mini MA" over by the lake. The "rapiers at dawn" section.

The arenas in AW were just like the arenas in AH though you could at least find a decent fight more often than not, unlike AH.

Sir, if you haven't been able to find plenty of bandits willing to bounce your P-38, you have been flying in a different MA than me.  :D

Personally, I don't have trouble finding bandits, I have trouble finding ONE bandit, cutting him out of the herd, killing him in a timely manner, and simultaneosly keeping good SA and out of situations that will end with my aircraft becoming scrap metal.
