...to the pigs and deer. Took the day off work yesterday as the forecost was for a beaut day. Went out to my 'spot' (10 mins drive from home) about 6am (sunrise is 7.30 right now). Made my way up the hills on the sunny side of the slopes hoping I might spot something. Then followed the sun onto the other side and picked up my first small goat herd. Got 3 of them including a big billy who had been doing the whole headbutting thing and was being a general b'stard to the other billy's :)

Later on further into the bush picked up another small herd and picked off one. Loads of pig sign and a little bit here and there of deer. Never saw any pigs or deer though :( . Spent 10 hours out and got home thoroughly exhausted :D

Good shot. :salute Are they Feral? What part of the world? BTW are you hunting with a silencer? I live in BC home to almost all wild North American game from turkeys to bison. (I think we are missing the pronghorn(Alberta) and wild boar(farmed))

Feral, New Zealand, they ruin fences, cause erosion with their eating habits etc. So the farms and conservation people love it when recreational hunters like me kill em. Yeah supressor, it's a 223 so it doesn't take the sonic boom out but takes the explosive crack out. The supressor also helps with accuracy (acts like a muzzle break and dampens recoil). When you use the supressor they also have a hard time figuring out where the shot came from, so you can usually get a few of them. This guy had quite a set of handlebars on him too :)

Do you eat them or they just for sport. The only goats we have ,other than in the pen, are mountain goats. Have to really be dedicated to get one of them, although just about got one with the truck a few years back.

Yeah but this was a ram rip... unless you're into that sort of thing with other boys ;)
Can't eat anything but the young un's. The old goats are smelly, and the meat from the billy's is particularly bad apparently (ie wouldn't even bury it in a garden of someone I hated). We usually slice the gut open and kick em somewhere out of site (down a gully) - the pigs will finish them off once the corpse has rotted for a week.
Baitman: we also have tahr and chamois in some parts of the country. A lot of wildlife was released here ages ago for game hunting. Some of it like tahr is on the endangered species list but huntable here as it is not native. NZ basically has no native mammals apart from a species or two of bat.

Haven't got a goat or a sheep yet but I do like a nice double smoked black bear ham :D Or moose tenderloin, just a minute I have moose pepperoni in the freezer. :aok

early morning, lighting was low, but heres some bush on the east face. There's some nasty nettle here, NZ native nettle is the most potent in the world and has even killed one tramper who fell into some:

A lovely hidden pasture I found down a gully, it looks fenced but al the fences are rotten, hasn't been much here for a long time. I'm guessing deer might show up here from time to time :)

Same spot, off to the right is a cliff, I spotted some goats up there and managed to snipe one (no pic as it was impossible to climb too)

The creek is a bit flooded at the moment, I think it's just the soggy ground giving the grass a funny shade of green. No idea on the goat weight, at a guess 80kg's?

NZ was always a hunt I wanted to make. The trophy potential down there is astounding and with the prices in America for a book Elk it probably makes more sense to go down there instead.

Wapiti is the Cree word for elk (waapiti).
We have Wapiti river valley in alberta and bc didn't realize that the cree word made it overseas too that is cool :aok

Not really surprising when you realize that Wapiti is actually a european version of a word that came from a people with no written language of their own...

Theres about 1/2 dozen NZ species I have interest in.

Yes, lotta hunters come from overseas. Althought local hunters generally dislike most of them, they usually rent a chopper and get dropped off in a nice spot while the chopper herds the prey towards them. Some do the hard yards but not many (guess it's a time thing).
