As a former Vette owner....I thought this vid was sweet. I had mine to over 150 a couple of times. This vid rocked.

GT-R V-Spec vs C6 ZR-1...
Now this is the battle of the decade! :aok
-
Nice vid. I had my c4 over 200 twice... anything over 150 was a bit scary for me. It wouldn't go that fast now since I changed out the rear end gearing but it's quicker down the quarter now.
-
Up on the curbs, the apron, I think even in the grass... nice to see a car like that driven like it's stolen. :aok
Sheesh, 179mph. That's haulin some ass.
-
And I'm proud, to be an American.... (everybody, sing along!).... That is awesome. Love my Chev's, especially the Vettes.
-
Beautiful.. I'd drive that over a GTR everytime.. Holy toejam.. I haven't seen someone do the ring like that since that yellowbird Porsche back then. :lol

There was a vid of a BMW running the ring that was every bit as good as that vette. In fact I think he broke the record....I for the life of me can't find it now any where. I was just stunned by the BMW running that fast and this Vette was just as good.

RedTop lemme know if you find it, or if you remember some detail I could find it by, like pilot's name, etc. You've seen the Yellowbird video right? :) I watched this ZR1 vid again and he does miss the line more than a few times. Nonetheless it's obviously way more fun to drive at that pace than the computerized gecko GTR.

Nope..havent seen the Yellowbird Porshe. That BMW was a racing BMW....not in a race just running the track. Im almost positve the guy driving it (cant remember his name) set the track record at the time. It was a FAST donut turbo charge blue and white racing beemer. Guy had that turbo CRANKIN....Was much fun and he drove it perfect.
The Vette was just muscle it around driving. He missed a bunch of apexes.....but MAN...the sound...screechin tires...getting it a bit sideways.....looked like a TON of fun.
-
I think I might have seen that BMW vid. Let me know if you remember something though.
Here's the RUF vid.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Thomd4BQg I have the uncut TV version with some helicopter and trackside views somewhere... It's a bit better than this one.

Yellowbird, as in the 1987 RUF CTR? Now you realize why my wife hates my photographic memory. :O
Yellowbird video in question:

I'd take the 1987 RUF over the Skyline GTR. The following is a pic that I've had on my HD's for a long time. I've ALWAYS had a thing for RUF's and Esprit Turbo's.

Yep, that's the one. We've come a long way... The cockpit perspective doesn't make the RUF seem as impressive as the ZR1. You can tell it's a lot less well behaved than the vette. The slides are still great though...

What a few of us KNOW about the Yellowbird is that it launched a hailstorm throughout the Automotive World, even after the 959 was released. In 87, I believe the Top Speed was 211mph, had a 0-60 of 4.0 secs, 0-120 of 11.0. Um, that's haulin'.
Not to mention like the 959 (which IMO is the most advanced auto ever produced for any time period, putting it ahead of the Tucker Torpedo), the RUF had even more innovation. IIRC the CTR's back then had a clutchless Manual trans.

That yellowbird vid is just wicked....man that was some driving there. WOW

not much better 21 years later.
I respectfully disagree.
The car in the video is a supercharged ZR1. The bone stock version had right around 400 HP. this one has 638 HP. 2008 - 21 = 1987. The ZR1's production run was between 1990 and 1995. the ZR1's curb weight was just over 3300 pounds.
The 2008 Z06 has 500 HP right out of the box. Add a supercharger and the car could easily produce 700 HP. The Z06 has a curb weight of 3160 pounds. Add to this the fact that the new Vette has near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, a more efficient gearbox, a more stable suspension and way better tires, and it's no wonder why that "Top Gear" guy hates it so much.

Disagree all you want. The bottom line is this. The Yellowbird can hang with a car made 21 years later. The Yellowbird was faster than the ZR1 of 1990. I'm still wondering what your "debate" on all of this is? The Callaway Sledgehammer smokes all three (CTR, ZR1, new ZR1) and it was produced in 1988.
HP is one facet and if that is what determines "the biggest production automobile genitalia". Then the Bugatti Veyron wins at 1,001HP (depending on climate it is at 1,050HP). Although, the same argument can be made for the Koenig Competition Evolution of 1990 that had 1000 HP (IIRC, 0-60 in 3.5 and 0-125mph in 10.0 sec's. That is FILTHY for a 18 year old car).
I know all about the Original ZR1 and even though I'm a Ford guy at heart, I was pissed when they ho'd the ZR1 name. The original is my Fav. Vette of all-time.
All I said was that both the GT-R and new ZR1 aren't much better than a 21 year old car. It is fact.
-
I was also a big fan of the ZR1 and I respectfully disagree with your assumption that the Z06 is "not much better" than the ZR1. The fact of the matter is that by the time the ZR1 got to production the GM bean counters had effectively neutered it and with each subsequent production year they chopped off a little more. With the Z06 Chevy did it right and it's a production car we (Americans) can be proud of. Remember, the car in the video is a pre-production car. Watching car manufacturers run time trials around The Ring in pre-production cars is like watching cartoon porn.
Your comment about the Yellow Bird bears no connection with my original post. I love Porsches and love 911's even more. Throw the acronym RUF into the equation and I will pitch a tent.

I merely responded in line with my stance.

te of all-time.

You are giving the 21 year old car in question too much credit. You are comparing 2 stock MASS PRODUCTION sports cars against a limited production tuner car.
-
Come on.. RUF is a small tuner for an unorthodox brand (rear engined rear wheel drive pure sports cars).. Nissan makes what's arguably the most user-friendly and easy to exploit pure sports car (arguable too, it seats 4 etc) of its level, and the ZR1 is going to be pretty restricted in production.. The real competitor to the ZR1, the V-spec, is going to be a similarly limited production. Saying the comparison is only fair if the cars are mass produced is a loaded comparison. I reckon that Japanese design and production also plays a good part in unbalancing an attempt at even grounded comparison between GM's, Nissan's, and Porsche/RUF's models of this performance level.
A 1987 car still doing as well as the original CTR is no small credit.

Wow, that argument looks very familiar...

LMAO, Jay!
Whiteman and I are planning on meeting up at a car meet tomorrow evening. I'll take pics and you'll see some really awesome rides from around here!
Oh yeah, I went to a car meet tonight that has a sign posted at the front, "Stop! Hot rods and showcars only!". Some young guy in a red Honda Civic 2 door with a high spoiler stopped, turned around, and parked outside of the entrance. It was pretty funny.

Woot!!! I had to drive the wife to the dealership to pick up her car. On the way? There is the most God awful turquoise V-6 Camaro with a "custom dual exhaust" and Chrome Vette wheels. The exhaust note was similar to my wife's 2006 Sable. Poor guy turned before I could point and laugh at him.

you can buy vettes and mustangs and vipers in specialty maker form from the dealers with warranties that will all produce about 1000 hp and have vastly improved handling.. they are sold in numbers about the same or more than ruff.

GM's putting out some muscle.
The Caddy ran the 'ring in 7:59 earlier this year. (Not to shabby for a Sedan!)

CTS-V = good car when the rear diff. doesn't go out. I know 4 people who have blown the rear on the CTS's. GM knows of the problem and is lethargic in it's compliance to rectify the snafu.
The V Series failed miserably and when the rear diff. problems started, most stayed on the showroom floors. Especially here in Michigan where they were highly anticipated.
-
Bahhh
If you want to get around the ring quick you need a ford transit...... well with sabine schmitz at the wheel anyway.

Looks like new cars are now being tweaked for the N-ring. For years German sports/luxury cars have been the gold standard because of this test track.
Don't be surprised if the next Hyundai sedan and Ford mustang go to N-ring for testing.

Watched the RUF run. Holy poop, that cat can drive too. Very entertaining runs.

Base GT-R vs ZR-1 side by side

Man the ZR-1 pwns the sound... LS3 + Eatons SC completely smothers the VR38DETT in sound department.

bronk, i saw that on TV, she did the ring in under 10 min with a 136HP van. :lol

I'm a bit tired to see youngsters hail the GTR bangwagon everytime you talk about a car. To me it's a sign of imaturity. I love the performance of the GTR, and somewhat the styling, but my experience with highly automated machines is that they are highly boring to operate. It's kind of like flying a F16 "where the pilot is just one of the input to the computer that drives the car".
I bet that you put a 16 year old in a GTR and he would smoke everyone around ... cute ... but I'm sure I would love the ZR1 better because you get more feelings/sensations/fear factor when you drive it. :rock
