Title: It seems I'm making a habbit of this.
Post by: Motherland on July 11, 2008, 11:43:46 PM
Just flew my Ta152 home with half my right wing gone... Took 50 minutes at 130mph  :rofl
This is now the third time in FSO I've rtb'd with half a wing missing.

Good job of recovering the hurt bird.  That must have been a long, long tiring flight for you to make it home?

Yeah... nursing your bird the whole way across the English Channel sure pumps the adrenaline :lol
And 50 minutes was not an exaggeration... I had to look at the film to see the time... felt like hours. Between .9 and 1.1 ata the whole time so I could maintain 130mph to keep all my flaps out (and thus even the lift between the two wings).

I was shaking after touchdown. This is one of the few times I actually didn't break the gear on that damned thing on landing.

I always hate trying to land a bird with half a wing missing, for me it's twice as hard then it is for a normal pilot, I have no use of my right arm so I can't really let go of the stick, and when I'm on approach trying to lower my throttle is damn near impossible, even letting go the 1 sec to adjust it and my approach is shot, I'd say I get a successful landing about 1 out of every 4 tries, it's definitely a feeling of accomplishment when I do get it right.

Count yourself lucky!!!

I lost the radiator in my 109K at 14k-or-so over LONDON itself.

USMC/71Sqn were bounced and trounced awfully but I was the first to get hit I think (naturally)... I was able to get away and nursed my radiator by gliding and by turning it on for 5-10 seconds at a time.

Now THAT was a long long LONG sortie, over just about every enemy dar bar east of London (afraid they'd come to investigate me at any moment), at the last minute diverting from a46 to a48 to bypass v118's dar rings, and being glad I did because 4 spits were vulching at a46 as I rolled to a safe stop at a48.

Now THAT was a harrowing trip home!
