Title: drums
Post by: texasmom on July 14, 2008, 10:58:26 PM
Thinking of letting my son have a drum set (which will be kept in the garage, of course).

Kinda selfish, but if he's gonna get together with friends & play music... him having the drums means his friends come here (so they can be sorted through with a fine toothed comb), instead of him ending up going to someone else's home... where I get only tiny glimpses of who he's with.

Anyhow, I guess there's no point to this post... except that I feel old & conniving in the reasoning behind the decision to let him have drums... since his satisfaction in doing something he likes is only secondary.

Make him learn to play a guitar first. Then get him a bass guitar, then a Drum-set. So that way, no matter what, he can be anything in a band.  :rock

That's what I'm doing. Already know Bass and Guitar, and I'm getting a drum set.  :aok

Might want to soundproof the room, drums can get annoying after awhile.  Kids always seem to want to practice when you're trying to sleep or watch a movie.

Consider a set of V-Drums by Roland..He can practice with headphones and plug into an amp for jammin out.

The best of both worlds.

Not sure what your budget is, but for about $1k you can get a digital drum set that can have each pad programmed to be different instruments.

Volume is adjustable and can be used with headphones.

Digital drums suck... They're totally for n00bs..

Drummers play drums.. Not mesh headed, rubber cymbaled, plastic pieces of junk...

(yes I am a drum snob)  :rock

My son wanted drums and we reluctantly got some for him.  We didnt think he would stick with it.  But he loved it and ended up being the band trap set drummer for the high school band at basketball games and school concerts.  One of the best things we ever bought him it turns out.  We bought a used Yamaha set that we got at a good price and looked new.  You wouldnt have to buy a new set... ask your band director at your school or put in a word at a music store if you dont need it right now.

Blasphemy!!!!!

They are loud, though.  That's why they keep me in a cage :devil

But then again, he might end up playing with a Rastafarian steel pan band.....

Or on a good note, he might be the next Mike Portnoy.

In any case, to keep the noise and cost down, get him a snare drum to start.  If he doesn't get board learning the rudiments and sticks with it (pun intended), you will know that he is serious.

Drums are not cheap.  Getting him a cheap set will only discourage him (as with any cheap instrument).  A good kit could run into the 1,000's of dollars.  Cymbals even more so.  I have a ride cymbal that cost me almost $400.  The others average about $200 a piece.  A good chunk of change to lay down for something that you beat upon incessantly with a wooden stick.

Cheap drums will not keep in tune, and the hardware will fail.  Cheap cymbals will crack and even break on occasion.  I play a 20 year old Pearl kit with about 8  Zildjian cymbals.  I have practiced for countless hours upon it, schlepped it to many clubs for innumerable gigs, and haven't broken a head or cymbal in 15 years.

Music is a wonderful gift to have, and share with others.  I say encourage it, but make it clear that for the expenditure on your part, there must be some commitment on HIS part.

Yeah, wouldn't you know it?  I'm the drummer, and my wife gets to see him once a week (when not on tour)

He lives near us (in PA) and goes to the chiropractor that my wife works for.  She is a chiropractic assistant, and a massage therapist.  She has worked on him for a few years, now.

She came home from work one day and said that there was "this new patient" at work and he looked like some kinda of rock star.  I went in the next week, because I wanted to see what she meant.  I walked in as he was walking out and i almost pissed myself.  The Dr. and the girls had no idea who he was (except my wife, from me playing all their albums at home)

Needless to say, the whole office knows who he is now, and he has even gotten them some tickets for shows.  They are all fans, now   :rock

Gonna get myself some drums and start to learn to play the drums. I hope to get a Tama Drumset in the future. I hear they're among one of the best to have, plus my favorite drummer of all time (Jukka Nevalainen) uses this set!  :rock

Get the kid some drums....it's way cooler than Xbox 360 :) Buy a used Tama rockstar or Pearl Forum Kit. You'll find tons of used drumkits usually with cymbals and other accessories included ( normally extra new )on craigslist or the like. Perhaps he is the next Neil Peart, Danny Carrey, Stewart Copeland, Art Blakey, or Indeed ( geeky ) Mike Portnoy. ( met john petrucci once, hell of a nice guy )

Get him some lessons. Try a few months with a good instructor.

Encourage a practice routine :)

Tell him to start practicing this :)

Right Left Right Right Left Right Left Left

AGAIN USED IS THE WAY TO GO HERE!!!!! A tama rockstar or Pearl forum 5pc should run you about 300 to 350.

Lessons usually run abt 35 an hr these days, more for the well known teachers.

I hate them too.  :furious  They see and talk to him all of the time.

My wife is a big music nut and can appreciate his skills.

The rest of them  had no idea of the talent he had until their first show!

I kept telling them that he wasn't just "any old drummer"   :rofl

Its not mine. I play in a band that is on the road a lot and rather then drag my kit in a plane we just use the house drums. On this particular night we where at a bar in Columbus Ohio and Vince Neil was playing on the beer garden stage outside. We had to open for Vince outside then after he was done with his set we had to play the rest of the night inside. Well rather then drag the house kit inside and do a sound check after we did our set. One of the guys in the other bands that played before us was nice enough to let me use his kit. As you can see by the picture the dude had a lot of crap, I'm used to playing a four piece with a ride and at the most two crashes. I got behind this thing and felt like a little kid.

Most of the time I play on something like this, and this is one of the best ones.

Other nights I get to deal with a gem like this, notice the drumstick splint ;)

You don't read Modern Drummer to often, I guess.  He's only been on the cover about 6 times as drummer of the year.

You know, I haven't been reading my Modern Drummer lately, I often wonder why I even subscribe?  I guess I'm to busy reading Modern Basketweaver, Modern Doorknob fixer, and Modern Other things irrelevant to my life.  I went ahead and googled it, saw he was the drummer for Dream Theater (which explains why I didn't know who he is).  I remember way back in the day when Nikki Sixx was voted Bassist of the year several times by Metal Magazines, so whatever that is worth.

In an un-drum related note, last year I sold a guitar my Grandfather had given me.  He was a very gifted player (only had 4 fingers on this fretting hand).  It was a MINT 1961 Les Paul SG.... One sweet piece of musical hardware.

This is true but I got to see GodSmack live here in Virginia Beach and see that drum duel live and it kicked prettythang!! Only one I've seen other than that one that even came close was Trans Siberian Orchestra this past winter up in Hampton and that show rocked!!!

You just have to love a great drum solo or drum duel. It gets the crowd pumped up!!!! :rock

Mmmm, I feel your concern.  Sure wish his affinity was for keyboards (and headphones).  Different strokes for different folks, literally.  You're wise to be the host, but be sure to monitor discreetly to make sure an errant participant doesn't implicate you in any wrongdoing, which hopefully will never happen (says the worst-case planner).
